A mass shooting committed by 39-year-old Chad Hickman has left six people dead, including the gunman, in Missaukee county, a rural area of northern Michigan, according to state police. Another person is in critical condition at a local hospital.

Previously, in January 2024, Hickman was arraigned on four felony and five misdemeanor charges in Missaukee County. Prosecutors accused him of assault with intent to do great bodily harm by strangulation. They also charged him with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

That was 2½ years ago, so what happened? Was he acquitted? Did the prosecution fail to bring him to trial? One would think that with those charges, had he been convicted, and not given a sweetheart plea deal, he should have been in prison when he committed the recent murders.
I get that he could have been out on bail: the Constitution guarantees the right to reasonable bail, and we can’t just hold people in jail without a trial and conviction . . . unless you were charged with walking through the Capitol on January 6th!
Michigan was the first English-speaking government in the world to abolish the death penalty, in 1847, so the most he could get is life in prison without the possibility of parole.
