On Hurricanes: Stop the Coverage

Perhaps this is an old refrain, but it might be time for the media to stop covering hurricanes live-on-the-scene as they happen. People see these folks standing out in the elements reporting, and we get to see conditions that often look bad, but not bad enough to make people consider leaving the area. The Weather Channel was constantly reporting Sunday that only 20 percent of the Key West residents had left. Not good.

Sometimes a hurricane doesn’t turn out as bad as it was supposed to. However, one never knows, eh? Showing this does not help. And, you never know what can happen. Consider the flooding after Katrina and Floyd. Lots of people trapped. Most deaths occured from flooding for both hurricanes.

If these reporters want to be out there, they need to show only when it is REALLY blowing and flooding. Yes, scare people. Show the power of the storms.

The Conch’s would read that and say “Meh, whatever.” They just aren’t impressed by these storms.

It’s hard to explain the attitude of the people (like me) that have lived in Florida all of our lives. You would think after getting smacked with three of these things last year we would have been more worried this time.

Maybe I should write a post on what we did to prepare, why we decided to stay and what would have made us evacuate. A look into the mind of a crazy Floridian.
