Look, Rednecks!

Hey, y’all, Jebediah here. Ya know, I get a big hoot out of them thar Demoncrats (demorats, dummocrats, etc) always calling us Southerners (ALWAYS spelled with a Capital S, ya hear?) rednecks and such. That’s a heck of a good way to win the South (<see!) come 2008. Heck, Al Gore couldn’t even carry his home state of Tennessee in 2000. How sad (and funny) is that?

Now, we Southerners are spreadin’ out to the world:

They pick guitars and banjos, wear Stetson hats and sing plaintively about hard men with soft hearts. But these music-lovin’ cowpokes are a long, long way from Texas.

They are, in fact, in Prague, the unlikely capital of country music in Europe since the time of Buffalo Bill.

Yup. Unfortunately, the article states that Country music is kinda dying out, because it is about Conservative values. You know, things like family, children, kindness, Country, God. Everything that the vocal Liberal movement is against.

That’s OK, cause the South shall rule again. Not through military power, but through basic, fundamental values. Again, something that the vocal Liberal movement is against.

Huh? What the hell are you making reference to?
Award for lamest, most random entry ever.
Won’t be comin’ back here again, ya hear?

  2. Dude – Did you even read the article? It’s how country music is dying in the Czech republic! Apparently country music was one form of protest against the communist government. The article has nothing to do with the South or country music in the US.

“”Country has had it, especially when you see the young people who take every chance to protest against everything American. In my day we would have punched them in the face,” fumed the musician, who adapted to Czech hundreds of American and Australian country songs.

“Country’s peak is already behind us. The philosophy of this music is basically conservative, upholding traditional values of family and country. And there hasn’t yet been a serious conservative political party here,” Cvancara said. ”

They state the problem is the lack of conservatives in the Czech republic, not that country music is dying out. Man read the article.

  3. madmatt says:

And then there is the fact that every song sounds the same, and if you listen to the lyrics it is all about hatred and betrayal, perfect for this administration.

  4. E.D. Keogh says:

Now I’m one of those Northern liberal types so naturally I woke up this morning hating my family and damning god while pissing on the American flag; on my way to work I used my Eco-friendly car to try run a school bus off the road, man do I hate children. So you might want to take my opinion with a a grain of salt. But if you don’t like the generalisation, redneck (personally I prefer, hick or troglodyte) then maybe you should stop your generalization of liberals as a token of good will.

The South shall rule again? When was the first time? Yeah, just as soon as you kick that methamphetamine habit, and fix that rusted out pickup on your lawn. Then finally the world will be safe again for Klan rallies, slave owners and incestuous sexual congress.

P.S. What is more unpatriotic then succeeding from the United States?

  5. E.D. Keogh says:

    seceding! Damn you spell check!

  6. Ryan says:

It’s tough for a movement or cultural phenomenon to go mainstream and keep its momentum when it is traditionally identified with outsiders and/or with being an outsider. country music in the czech republic must have seemed cool when it was being eradicated and oppressed by the communists. now it’s seen as old hat.

personally, I think American country music these days is kinda bland and too mainstream. some of it is pretty good, but mostly I miss Johnny Cash.

  7. maxxdogg says:

Jebediah, I guess it’s time to dust off those confederate flags. I’m sure we can bring back those southern fundamental values like lynching and racism. Hollaluya!

  8. esmense says:

I grew up in the south in the 50s and I would never have believed that half a century later the delightful, humorous and hard-headed (as opposed to hard-hearted) people who once were known as “Southerners” would transform themselves into the bunch of whiney, self-obsessed,”everybody’s always pickin’ one ME ME ME,” prune-faced, humorless prudes we see in the media and politics today.

In the 50s men capable of tongue-in-cheek and and a laugh were pickin out songs like Little Jimmy Dicken’s “My baby’s built like a coke bottle.”

Today almost the only thing coming out of the region is an endless loop of self-satisfied, self indulgent preaching that’s only real message is “we’re great and everybody else is crappy. (Especially our fellow Americans>)” The post above is just one more lame version that popular sermon.

  9. TC says:

But do any of them have an uncle named “terry”…no?

    Then they ain’t Southern.

  10. ahumbleanon says:

Country music is also about lyin’, cheatin’, drinkin’, leavin’, and hatin’ anyone different from us.

  11. J O says:

“You know, things like family, children, kindness, Country, God. Everything that the vocal Liberal movement is against.”

This statement is truly breathtaking in its stupidity.

  12. I think some of you are missing the humor in “White Trash Wednesday.”

However, just for reference, Jebediah did note that Country is dying out there, per the article. Also, there are values down here in the South, which we like.

  13. esmense says:

The reason Southern conservatives make such a fuss about keeping “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance is because those are the only words in the pledge they agree with.

  14. Actually, those are the only words they can read.

  15. nittacci says:

Man, I’ve seen a few dumb blogs, but you take the cake. Did you even read the article you reference?
Is English your first language? If you’re a Serbian war criminal on the run and you haven’t had time to sharpen your language skills, then maybe I’m being a bit too harsh.
I doubt it will come up, but now I know better than to follow any links to your site.

  16. Lindata says:

I’ve been married 37 years come September. I love my children – looking forward to grandchildren. I fly the flag on holidays. And people who know me will say, I am as honest and kind as they come. I am, however, agnostic and hate country music. I will, however, support your right to believe in God and listen to Garth Brooks, and I won’t bash you for being a conservative. Please do me the courtesy of not thinking that just because I am liberal I don’t share many of your values.

  17. Some Dude says:

The Southern states seceded from the United States, no?

  18. Lindata, I do. White Trash Wednesday is about being over the top and silly. Yes, those of us who are doing it are sorta making fun of Liberals who make fun of the South. I have lots of FAR left wing friends who are great parents, and believe in those things (though most do not like country music.)

Nittaci, WTW is supposed to be written that way. Like a redneck stereotype. And, yes, the article was read. Again, it was mentioned that Country is dying out in Praugue.

  19. Marcus says:

May I just say that the reason people listen to less country music is that most of it just plain sucks. The lyrics suck, the music is horribly derivative. Johnny Cash died and basically took male country music with him. I can listen to a lot of female country music (Susan Boggess, Faith Hill, Dixie Chicks) because those songs are better written and the musicianship is better too.

  20. LeftwingConservative says:

I understand this is about being over the top, and I take it with a grain of salt. But it’s really the same thing that right wingers have been saying for a long time, but with humor added. That would be anyone who disagrees with a right winger is a traitor, anyone who disagrees with a Republican is a liberal, a liberal is the same as a communist, the left hates God, the left hates America, anyone who questions the Republican ran government is Anti-American (yet I have a feeling questioning a Democrat ran government is ok), and on and on and on and on….
The hate filled lies and mud slinging rants that Republicans use gets very old.
Is it physically possible for a Republican to talk about politics without using the words Anti-American, traitor, treason, etc.??

  21. Actually, yes. I am more then willing to discuss things with dems. I do it all the time on a particular forum. I do not usually write like that on this blog, though, at times, I do go down that road.

Heck, there are times where I disagree with the GOP on certain issues, like the previous post. I also really do not have a problem with a lottery for NC, which most Republicans do not want.

I do thank y’all kindly for coming by, though.

  22. esmense says:

Where are all the “liberals” making fun of the South?

All I see is Southerners using this myth to denigrate and spew hate toward the rest of the country.

When I left Texas years ago I had quite an accent. I remember ONE teasing comment made about that when I went up North. But, during my childhood in the South, I heard many, many more derogatory comments made about my Catholic and ethnic (my mother was Italian) background.

I have a friend, from rural Georgia, who has long worked in fish & wildlife law enforcement. He is canny enough to use his accent to very good effect — he knows that the more “cracker” he sounds the less seriously he’ll be taken and the more off guard his prey will be. BUT THAT’S JUST AS TRUE WITH OTHER SOUTHERNERS AS IT IS WITH ANYONE ELSE. Elitism and snobbery (and of course, good values)have nothing to do with which part of the country you live in.

And anyone who suggests otherwise, of course, is just demonstrating how poor their own values really are.

  23. Ben Lynch says:

As a Southerner, not everyone of us holds fast to the old cliches of family, country, etc… at least not without some reflection. After all, last time we did that, it leasd to the extirpation of civilization in the region… I have become reconciled to the fact that I will remain a Southerner even if I depart the region and never return for sixty years; I am marked and cast by forces beyond my control and on the make before my birth. BTW, beyond Cash, I loathe country music, and I think the Bushes are the most repugnant bunch of carpetbaggers to batten on the South since Reconstruction. The current President irritates me no end with his attempts to act like a “Good Ol’ Boy” from Texas when he’s a spoiled rich kid from Conneticut.

  24. Howard West says:

If Country Music is dying, its not because its about conservative values, but because its not Country any more. Thanks to Kenny Chesney, adn Big and Rich and a just about everyone on CMT for the last 10 years, Country and Western is now just standad pop with a pedal steel thrown in from time to time.

To date myself, I think back to “Country Rock” when I was in high school and college. Charlie Daniels, The Allman Brothers, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, The Flyinig Burrito Brothers, Pure Prairie League, etc. They seem far more countrified than most of what I hear or see today and they weren’t even considered Country then.

I’m sure there are still a lot of good old-style C&W traditionalists out there, but they don’t seem to get nearly enough play. Besides, when I think of country, I think of Bluegrass.

Besides, C&W is has to be more than just waving the flag and kicking rag-head ass. Phony patriotism is just phony.

  25. Nick Stump says:

Well, I’m Kentuckian and a musician. I write and play country music. I’m tired of guys like you claiming the south and country music for your own. I know too many country musicians who voted Democrat and if the south voted the same as their musicians did, there would have been nothing but blues states here. Jebediah, you’re an embarrassment to the south and to country music. You can’t read. You don’t know anything about country music. There’s plenty of good country music being played right here in the USA. Most of it’s not on CMT and most of it’s not about how red our necks are. Get a clue Jebediah, sitting at your computer spewing out hate for liberals doesn’t have anything to do with fundemental values. You’re just another jackass who advances the stereotype that all southerners are inbred fools. I only hope that people around the country don’t look at blogs like this one and think you are a true example of southern manhood. We’re better than that. Just because I was raised in a trailer don’t mean I’m trash.

  26. Tom Silvestri says:

As Clarence White (about 5′ 4″) once threateningly said backstage to Gram Parsons (about 6′ 4″), “I’ve played more country music than you’ve ever played, and I know more about it than you’ll ever know,” Jebediah, and I want to second Ben Lynch, Howard West, and Nick Stump’s excellent entries, which say it all. Take your ignorant, ahistorical horseshit and shove it! Or maybe even better, ready Jerry Wexler’s autobiography RHYTHM AND THE BLUES: A LIFE IN AMERICAN MUSIC, which shows how Northerners and Southerners, blacks and whites, liberals and conservatives can make great music, country and otherwise, when they put their stupid little prejudices aside.

  27. Tom Silvestri says:

Pardon me, folks, I see I didn’t quite understand how this site works, and didn’t realize which comments were Ben Lynch’s. So while I understand Ben’s anger, I have to add that I can’t quite agree with all of his remarks, especially his disdain for country music outside of Johnny Cash. And P.S. to Howard and Nick: Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen are on tour this summer and their act is one of the most authentic bluegrass shows you’ll ever see these days. (I’m reminded of Vince Gill’s comment that today’s “Country music’s got too many belly buttons and back-up singers for me.”)

  28. I’ll tell you what, it is actually good to see folks, who I assume are Democrats, attacking me over this post. Why? It tells me that there are Democrats out there who do not share the Daily Kos/Democratic Underground/MoveOn/etc type values. Those are the ones that I tend to see and hear more often then those that don’t.

If you visit some of the far left sites, you will see that the post is justified, particularly the DU. Peruse it and see.

And yes, Country is losing it’s value to me, too. It is not as good as it used to be, even 3-4 years ago. Rock today mostly sucks, too.

  29. Rob says:

You know, things like family, children, kindness, Country, God. Everything that the vocal Liberal movement is against.

I’m a Southerner, I’m not a redneck, and as a non-Bush-voter who supports equality for all, transparent secular government, single-payer health care, and telling the truth about why we go to war, I suppose I’m a liberal. What you said is not only juvenile and offensive, it’s downright stupid.
