Musk Buying Twitter Is A Danger To Free Speech Or Something

Media folks and those who love to censor people for Wrongthink have been apoplectic over Elon Musk buying Twitter. They do not want you to have your say if it conflicts with Modern Socialist dogma. And now

AP sources: Musk in control of Twitter, ousts top executives

Elon Musk has taken control of Twitter and ousted the CEO, chief financial officer and the company’s top lawyer, two people familiar with the deal said Thursday night.

The people wouldn’t say if all the paperwork for the deal, originally valued at $44 billion, had been signed or if the deal has closed. But they said Musk is in charge of the social media platform and has fired CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal and Chief Legal Counsel Vijaya Gadde. Neither person wanted to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the deal.

How will it all work out? That’s the big question. Will there be less advertising in tweets and more of a pay model? How about the big one, which how it censors users, suspends them, and bans them. Some people deserve it, such as those who threaten and dox. Others, it’s been for saying things Twitter mods and unhinged leftists do not like. I had my original account “permanently suspended” for that, and have been suspended twice for tweeting Wrongthink. Same with so many other Conservatives. But, see, letting you have your say is (LA Times paywalled version here)

Op-Ed: How Elon Musk’s plans for Twitter could threaten free speech

As he prepares to take over Twitter, Elon Musk has said that, in the name of upholding free speech, he will dial back safeguards on the platform that are there to protect against disinformation. This would be a mistake, and not just because disinformation has fueled a crisis of faith in democracy and impeded pandemic response at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives.

Disinformation, though largely protected by the 1st Amendment against government control, can also imperil free speech itself. If Musk is serious about fostering open discourse, he needs to account for the dangers that disinformation poses to expression as he takes over one of the world’s most influential online platforms.

So Democrats like Eric Swalwall, along with other Democrats, who said they had evidence that Trump colluded with Russia should be banned? Who decides what’s misinformation/disinformation? There are still 9/11 Truthers on Twitter.

When arenas for public discourse are flooded with disinformation, free speech begins to shed its value. If audiences lose their grip on what is true and what is false, they can become primed to distrust everything and it becomes impossible to persuade people, even with the most compelling argument or evidence. If platforms are riddled with propaganda and political falsehoods aimed to skew election results, prospects for genuine discourse on matters of public policy or local affairs evaporate. If the search for reliable information yields nothing but a morass of comingled facts and falsehoods, people eventually stop searching.

Then Democrats like Katie Hobbs should be banned for blaming Kari Lake for the break in at the Hobbs office. It’s a seriously deranged attempt to censor people, but, we shouldn’t expect anything different from the Democratic Party run media. If it was their folks being censored, they’d be all against it.

The 1st Amendment prevents the government from suppressing most forms of disinformation because the Supreme Court has recognized that if permitted to regulate such speech, authorities would not be able to resist the temptation to use that power in self-serving ways, to silence critics and repress dissent.

Uh, no. The 1st Amendment says that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” The only ones authorized at the federal level to pass laws is the Congress, and they are 100% forbidden to stop your speech.

But the 1st Amendment doesn’t apply to social media companies since it only constrains the power of government. Online platforms can, for the most part, decide whether to suppress speech. But with platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Google so widely used, the place of free speech as an underpinning of society is at stake in their choices. Moreover, in a world powered by algorithms, speech moves differently than it did in an era of printed pamphlets and town meetings. Studies have shown that, on Twitter, disinformation travels faster and farther than truth.

If it looks like BS, I’ll look it up, just like with 9/11 Trutherism and ‘climate change’.

If Musk is serious about enhancing Twitter’s potential as a vehicle for free speech, he should focus on how to make the platform a hospitable place for dialogue, truth-seeking, citizen’s engagement — things at the heart of why free speech matters. Some of the steps he reportedly contemplates, including giving users more control over what they see on the platform, could help. So could improving Twitter’s system for appealing the removal of tweets and disabling of accounts, clearer communications about which rules posts are found to violate and why, and greater transparency to allow researchers to study the platform and determine whether and how political biases may infect content moderation.

But if Musk follows through on his promise to create open season for disinformation on Twitter he will risk destroying free speech in one of our global villages in the name of trying to save it.

If Democrats are too weak minded to do their own research, that’s on them. And they’re the ones who lie the most. Anything they do not like they label disinformation/misinformation. If I say something like “it’s probably not a good idea to let people (transgenders) with a higher rate of suicidal thoughts and suicidal attempts around military grade weapons”, is that misinformation or fact? Yes, we can ban bots with bullshit, and, I bet Musk allows that to continue. Censoring and banning simply for an opinion that Leftists do not like? Not so much. It’s nothing new: this is why they wanted Fox News shut down, why they wanted Rush, Hannity, and Beck, among others, off the radio. Why they wanted Net Neutrality.

Radio this morning is saying that Musk intends to fire 75% of twitter employees. Furious employees are demanding that Musk not use a political litmus test to determine who goes. Funny because that is exactly what those employees were doing to Twitter users all this time.

For the record, i still do not see any reason why an adult would have this.

Also for the record, 44 Billion valuation for a company that doesn’t produce anything useful or necessary is absurd.

Finally, Twitter has some serious problems that need no, and innovative solutions. The type of solutions that Musk is known for and the type of solutions that democratic party activists are known to obstruct. For example, while Twitter previously thought Trump and the Babylon Bee were somehow threats to civilization that needed to be squashed, the Taliban and ISIS managed to keep their accounts. Further, Twitter is a known hotbed for the dissemination of Child and adult porn. There is no evidence that Twitter has put nearly the effort into expelling that from their platform as they have expelling anti-communist, anti-“woke” political activism. We expect Musk to put some effort into correcting this.

In addition to purging the employees, purging the users, and establishing better use policies, we also expect Musk to purge the bots. And then Musk can sue the previous CEO and management team for securities fraud since they made SEC claims based on number of users when a large chunk of those were known to be nothing but bots, not real users.

Maybe muskyman should fire 100% of twitter employees. THAT would be his greatest community service!

Twitter is part of big tech’s greed regardless of their destruction of the globe.

Social media companies are vehicles for advertising, period. The more outrageous the typings from partisan on tweeter, facebook etc the more traffic, the more advertisers will pay.

A nation depending on social media for information instead of facts, is destined to fail.

The USA’s biggest problem is the increasing failure of the citizenry to discriminate between truth and bullshit.

Bullshit sells. Empires collapse from internal strife, not external attacks. Perhaps it’s time to completely decentralize the USA, turning every state into an independent nation-state as nuCons want. Have the feds in charge of a common currency and little else.

It was independent bloggers who discovered that Dan Rather and CBS News used forged documents — so obviously forged that it was apparent even over the non HD television screens of 2004 — to try and turn the 2004 election against President Bush.

I’m the one who researched the fact that the credentialed media left out a very important fact behind the Cherokee County (NC) School District deciding it would forfeit all girls’ volleyball games against Highlands School, because an athlete from the Highlands girls’ volleyball team injured a player for Hiwassee Dam High School. Several credentialed media sources reported that story, but none of them mentioned that the Highlands School girls’ volleyball player who injured the Hiwassee Dam player is actually a male who claims to be a girl. A few other conservative blogs mentioned that, which gave me the clue, but I’m the only one that I saw who linked the minutes of the Board of Education, and quoted from it, to prove that this wasn’t some evil reich-wing lie.

A nation which didn’t have social media to fact check the credentialed media would be a nation misinform3ed by the mostly liberal biases of the credentialed media.

        • The Liberal but not libertarian Elwood P. Dowd says:

Kudos! I meant to ask; did you identify the credentialed media that “buried the lede” of the story? You must understand that a volleyball player getting injured in a game is not big news. Did you expect the NYT and Wall Street Journal to cover this?

Did credentialed media report the forfeiture of games without pointing out the reason?

I was aware of the story before your expose, likely from some general compiler such as Yahoo or MSN.

          • Elwood P. Dowd says:

            Mega MAGAt,

First Amendment to our US Constitution:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Our Constitution is clear about abridging speech. Our Supreme Court has allowed exceptions to this, e.g.,

Obscenity, fraud, child pornography, speech integral to illegal conduct, speech that incites imminent lawless action, speech that violates intellectual property law, true threats, commercial speech such as advertising, defamation that causes harm to reputation are categories of speech that are given lesser or no protection by the First Amendment.

Your employer can fire you for violating their limitations on your free speech, for example, sharing business secrets, publicly criticizing the company, public anti-Semitic remarks, remarks that harm the company in any way etc. Newspapers, websites, social media can limit your free speech by not publishing/posting your contributions or blocking contributions that violate their codes. Schools can abridge the speech of students.

We get it, wingers want to abridge the right of private organizations to restrict speech. You want the government to order private entities such as twitter and facebook to publish your stuff, as if there is no other way to get your opinions out. We’ve heard few calls by libs to limit the speech on BitChute, GAB, GTTER, Odysee, Rumble or “Truth” Social.

Censorship! by twitter is just one more red herring being dragged through the brush to distract folks. When the Chief Twit allows PedoDon back on twitter (There’s gold in them thar fools!), all will be all better.

That said, we oppose government restrictions on speech and even agree that social media are PUBLISHERS not just bulletin boards (PLATFORMS) with no responsibilities.

They are publishers. It is time we stopped giving them a free ride as bogus “platforms” as if they have no control and cannot be held responsible for what their users post. Every so often, Facebook or Twitter banishes someone or removes some pages or tweets, and we see them doing their job of editing the work to be published so it meets community and legal standards. Just like a newspaper, magazine, or any publisher is supposed to do.

But with the freedom to edit content comes the responsibilities and liabilities that these companies want to avoid at all costs. They want it both ways. As long as the money keeps flowing. These businesses are not vehicles of free speech but rather advertising.

MM: When you ask “Do you believe that the Covid vaccines are more dangerous than Covid?” you are again lying.

Exaggerating maybe. But then you supply a string of lies and half-truths – “it’s untested, it is not safe, is fake, can kill or harm people”. The vaccines are not fake. They do reduce the spread and severity of the disease. Of the hundreds of millions of doses administered, few have died from the injections. All immunizations have risks.

We get it, your crew distrusts the US government, doctors and scientists. It’s partly a real concern, but mostly a political position.

MM: Do you actually believe pedo joe got 81 million votes “more than any president in history” campaigning from his basement and drawing “crowds of dozens”?

I understand that that was the result of the election. I also understand that Americans strongly disliked PedoDon, the then president. There is no credible evidence to dissuade us that PedoDon actually won. Is your feeling the best evidence you have?

MM: Do you actually believe the mostly peaceful protest on 1/6 by unarmed working Americans was an insurrection?

Yes. I understand that the attack on the US Congress as they attempted to certify the EC vote was an insurrection, meaning the objective was to interfere with the peaceful transfer of executive power. So yes, that’s an insurrection.

Finally, I’m not afraid of lies, bullshit, mis- and disinformation, I hate it.

That’s the thing about advertisements on Twitter: you are free to ignore them! If I’ve ever bought anything from a Twitter ad, IO don’t recall doing so.

Actually, I do expect to see more ads and ‘sponsored content’ for Tesla on Twitter. Since Twitter depends on advertising revenue to make money, and Tesla would have to pay for the ads, Mr Musk could make Twitter more profitable for himself by directing more of Tesla’s advertising dollars that way. And no, that isn’t illegal.

  3. Remember: The New York Times provided OpEd space for New Yorker writer Andrew Marantz to publish “Free Speech Is Killing Us,” on October 4, 2019, and for Chad Malloy — a male who claims to be a chick named ‘Parker” — to publish “How Twitter’s Ban on ‘Deadnaming’ Promotes Free Speech”, on November 29, 2018. On April 25th of this year, NYT Editorial Board member Gary Bensinger published “Twitter Under Elon Musk Will Be a Scary Place”.

The NYT was always a great supporter of freedom of the press, winning their case in New York Times Co. v. United States, 403 U.S. 713 (1971), when publishers like the Times were the “gatekeepers” who could keep out the riff-raff. Now that the internet has effectively removed that gatekeeping function, the support of the Times for freedom of speech and freedom of the press seems to have diminished.

Freedom for me, but not for thee.

      LGB mocked:

Kathleen Parker of The Washington Post wants us all to wear masks again, because:

We’re not (over COVID) by a long shot. Despite our best efforts to thwart the virus that leads to covid — and despite my own adherence to best practices — it got me again.

That’s two vaccinations, two boosters, and now, two covids — appropriate for a Libra, I suppose.

If Miss Parker adhered to “best practices,” I assume that she was masked as well at the “packed art gallery” in which she believes she contracted the virus. Yet, with all of that, she still got the virus! Which leads me to ask: why does she believe that we should all mask up again, since her own “adherence to best practices” did not prevent her from contracting the virus again?

      Her most telling line was:

But I’ll tell you what’s everywhere — covid-19, and it smells your fear.

Yup, she told the truth: she’s haunted by fear. But if the SARS-CoV-2 virus “smells (our) fear,” then the way to avoid it is to not be afraid of it! ????

I have no complaint about her article, in that she is asking people to start wearing masks again, rather than demanding that the government impose mask mandates; asking people to do something is very well within her freedom of speech and of the press. But while I agree with the sensible precautions of getting vaccinated, I will not succumb to mindless, mind-killing fear.

If the competitors with Twitter had real heft, it might be different, but Twitter is so large, and dominates the market so thoroughly, that it has crossed the threshold of being a private company to becoming a public utility. Remember: government at every level uses Twitter as an easy means of communication with the public, something that doesn’t happen with the competitors.

Jackson Energy Cooperative is my electric service provider; should Jackson, as a private company, be allowed to deny me electric service because I use that sparktricity to push conservatism? Should Windstream be allowed to deny me an internet connection because I might say something the company do not like on the internet? Should Verizon have the right to deny me cell service because I might use it to call friends to attend a Republican meeting?

As usual, he does NOT GET IT. In fact he skips right over it and ignores it. The government (NIH, CDC, DOJ, FBI,IRS and others) have teamed up with Twitter, Google and YouTube to censor and block opinions. Not misinformation but other people’s opinions. They even deplatformed a sitting president during a reelection campaign thereby influencing and stealing the election. That’s collusion and that’s far past abridging the right of private organizations.

That’s collusion, influence peddling and conspiracy to overthrow the government.

We’ve heard few calls by libs to limit the speech on BitChute, GAB, GTTER, Odysee, Rumble or “Truth” Social.

That’s because they aren’t “influencers”. We don’t hear calls to censor Svengoolie or The Price Is Right either but leftists have been clamoring to cut FOX since it’s inception. Just because the commies pick and choose who they go after does not negate their insidious anti-Freedom intent.

There is so much fear on the left that their positions are indefensible (which they are) they can’t allow debate. They automatically switch into name calling, ad homs, logical fallacy et al. But they always try for censoring other opinions. That’s their go-to position.

You’ll also notice how they rant and rave about “our democracy” (spit) yet it is the Republicans who begin every rally with the Star Spangled Banner, the Pledge of Allegiance and FOX that begins each broadcast dat with a 6am Anthem . You may not have heard it but they were chanting “Hang Mike Pence”!

            I’m sure I missed some.

Conmenter: Remind us again why a corporation should use its power to dictate political will on the people it has chosen to serve.

You may be confused regarding the roles of corporations. They want to make as much profit as possible by any legal means they can. They serve their shareholders. Corporations can abridge the speech of employees, consultants, contractors and directors ad libitum. The debate is whether twitter can moderate the free content they receive from contributors while at the same time receiving government protections from the liabilities of that content. Some nuCons now argue that twitter is so important to American society that it should be nationalized and regulated as a public utility, explaining twitter is less like the NYTs or FOX, and more like the electric company. twitter receives almost all its revenue from ads and with some 400 million regular users it’s a potentially lucrative platform for advertisers.

President Biden has called on Congress to rescind the federal tax on diesel. The GOP only needs a few Dem defectors to pass the bills. The states could do the same. Crude oil is a global commodity. US refiners produce about 1 gal of diesel for every 2 gal of gasoline. Over the past several years, refiners have been required to remove sulfur impurities from diesel, which adds cost. And of course, demand has increased following the tRump Pandemic which allows middlemen to raise prices.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Then twitter should be regulated by the government like a utility?

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Dana: it (twitter) has crossed the threshold of being a private company to becoming a public utility

Of course, the analogy falls apart when one recognizes that public utilities such as water, sewer, gas, electricity are government regulated monopolies based on infrastructure requirements and critical for modern life.

If Musk shuts down twitter tomorrow, so what? In fact, the nation might be better off. On the other hand, if your local electric utility cuts you off, you’re in a world of hurt. Same with gas. Same with water. I guess you could still poop and piss in a hole in the back yard, but eventually your quality of life would suffer. My smalltown granddad in the Ozarks had a well out front where you cranked up the bucket, and an outhouse out back.

Rimjob: No one is terrified of free speech. But lies and bullshit, mostly from right-wing sources, are eroding the underpinning of this nation.

Yet the Brandon administration, which routinely pressures social media companies to suppress speech it does not like, is hardly a model of transparency.

“But lies and bullshit mostly from right wing sources….” Bingo-another totally useless unsupported assumption!
“Libs aren’t afraid of free speech”. Really? Sure you are -who suppresses speech on social media-the left. Who shouts down conservative speakers at college campuses? The left. Notice that you give zero examples of the right censoring speech, because there really isn’t any. It’s all the left. And those “do you believe” questions-those are called a difference of opinion, which are obviously allowed under free speech. Maybe time for you to re-study the 1st Amendment if you think those lame examples shouldn’t be covered.
But here’s one for you-do you believe there’s ever been a verifiable cause-effect experiment done demonstrating the agw theory? Me neither, because there hasn’t

    • Catholic Elwood P. Dowd says:

We didn’t claim the right was suppressing speech, but since you brought it up… Most book banners are wingers. Most suppression of teachers comes from wingers wanting to ban any mention of slavery, LGBTQ, evolution, history, biology, global warming or anything that might diminish the esteem of mom and dad. tRuth Social warns users not to “disparage, tarnish, or otherwise harm, in our opinion, us and/or the Site.” Ron DeSantis has threatened state universities with budget cuts if they allow professors to testify in voter suppression cases.

Of course, your dumb opinions (The election was stolen!) are absolutely free speech and allowed, but the 1st Amendment does not immunize you against criticism, nor does it guarantee that private entities must publish and spread your false claims. Is the government trying to keep you from lying? No.

Conmenter typed: do you believe there’s ever been a verifiable cause-effect experiment done demonstrating the agw theory?

Not that I’m aware. Would you please explain what you believe that experiment would look like? What evidence would you find persuasive?

The theory of AGW predicts that increases in atmospheric CO2 will cause the atmosphere to warm.

This is Jeff’s favorite response to the carbon hoax. We are supposed to develop experiments to prove his hypothesis. Jeff is not very bright. He lies about every aspect of his carbon religion. And totally misrepresents efforts to maintain truth in education.

        “Book banners”, huh?

This is the lie of the left, that sensible people are trying to “ban books.” No, we are trying to remove topically inappropriate material from public schools! No one is saying that private bookstores or amazon.com can’t carry or sell anything they want, just that the public schools, which have students as a captive audience — remember: school attendance is compulsory — should not be attempting to teach the normalization of abnormality.

The left have been fighting for the acceptance and normalization of abnormality in the schools, and you guys wonder why you get called groomers.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Catholic women get plenty of abortions as it turns out.

          According to the Guttmacher Institute:

          • Many abortion patients reported a religious affiliation—24% were Catholic, 17% were mainline Protestant, 13% were evangelical Protestant and 8% identified with some other religion. Thirty-eight percent of patients had no religious affiliation.

How can that be? Only 20% of Americans are Catholic but they receive 24% of the abortions. Can’t you Catholics control your women? We can be confident that the priests are not the fathers-to-be, unless the girls are 14 or younger.

Regarding “grooming” – it’s a GOPher political strategy. Gay grooming, black crime, inflation and Mexicans! And “elites”.

As we proved the other day, home schooled children are much more at risk of abuse than kids in school.
