For over 17 years here on this blog, and further back when I was on chatboards, I’ve been saying that ‘climate change’ is all about control. That even if mankind was mostly responsible, the policies to “solve” it are all about the government controlling your life

(AP) With upcoming data showing traffic deaths soaring, the Biden administration is steering $5 billion in federal aid to cities and localities to address the growing crisis by slowing down cars, carving out bike paths and wider sidewalks and nudging commuters to public transit.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Monday announced the availability of money over five years under his department’s new Safe Streets & Roads for All program.

The aim will be to provide a direct infusion of federal cash to communities that pledge to promote safety for the multiple users of a roadway, particularly pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as motorists.

Too be honest, if he wants to help, he’d push the police to crack down on certain behaviors that lead to those accidents, such as blowing off stop signs and stop lights, driving irresponsibly, and so forth. Not forcing people to take the bus or bikes.

Deaths also are disproportionately higher among nonwhite, lower-income people, who are more likely to take public transit and travel by foot or bike, as well as those in tribal and rural areas, where speeding can be common and seat belt use less frequent.

Of course we must have a raaaaacial component.

Cliff said a big chunk of fatalities have been occurring for motorists who do not buckle up and often during short car trips “down the street.”

Well, just because some are dumb enough to not wear a seatbelt doesn’t mean the rest of us should have to ride bikes.

Really, the policy proposal is not all that bad. New sidewalks, bike lanes, etc. But, you know that is just the surface level. It’s the parts you do not see that are insidious, as usual.

    Except, of course, in heavily black West Philadelphia, the residents have opposed sidewalk improvement because it might bring in more white people, and gentrification.

    The topic of the community meeting — a plan to beautify 52nd Street, to make it safe, welcoming, and prosperous once again — was, on its face, nothing but good news for West Philadelphia’s long-declining business corridor.

    Yet the audience of about 50 residents and retailers, mostly African American, grew increasingly agitated as urban designer Jonas Maciunas flipped through a PowerPoint presentation of proposed improvements. Many weren’t seeing a vision of a neighborhood revitalized from Market to Pine Streets. Instead, in the talk of redesigned intersections, leafy thoroughfares, and better bus shelters, they heard the ominous whisper of gentrification.

    “It just seems that when white people decide to come back to a certain neighborhood, they want it a certain way,” said Carol Morris, 68, a retired elementary school teacher.

    While The Honorable Mr Buttigieg wants to increase the use of public transportation, it seems that people in the Philadelphia metropolitan area have cut back on their use of SEPTA, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority, due to increased crime, drug use and the vagrants using terminals in which to sleep.

    The strongest criticism of SEPTA came from the Transport Workers Union Local 234.

    “The ongoing nature of the problems of homelessness, drug addiction and crime in the subway demonstrates a lack of will on the part of Chief Thomas Nestel,” said Brian Pollitt, president of Local 234, in his written testimony.

    Pollitt said trains at the terminal points of subway lines have become “hotels for the homeless” and TWU members “are being threatened, assaulted and otherwise accosted while trying to perform their jobs.”

    The union wants a stronger police presence to keep workers and the public safe from criminals.

    “It’s common sense. They need a deterrent,” Pollitt said. “They need a guy with a gun and some bracelets … someone with the power to stop them from what they’re doing and the ability to arrest them.”

    While the article mentions the panicdemic, it wasn’t specific in asking how many potential riders have dumped SEPTA over the odious and useless mask mandates.
