Democrats turn against mask mandates as Covid landscape and voter attitudes shift
The decision is being driven by a mix of science and political science.When President Joe Biden gives his State of the Union speech on Tuesday, the mask mandate will be gone in the Capitol, reflecting a stark nationwide shift for Democrats against the public safety rule that has fueled a red-versus-blue culture war.
Behind the shift is a blend of science and political science.
The Covid-19 landscape is improving, with vaccines and booster shots easily available and proving highly effective at preventing severe illness or death. The Centers For Disease Control say 70 percent of Americans reside in areas with low or medium Covid levels. All 50 states have eased or eliminated mask mandates, and the White House formally ditched its requirement Monday.
Interestingly, most Democrats are not in favor of doing away with mandates

After vanquishing Donald Trump by promising to get the virus under control, Democrats are now positioning themselves to declare victory against Covid ahead of a tough midterm election, amid recent polling data showing that Americans are less fearful of Covid-related illness and eager to return to normal life.
“We’ve beaten Covid. Time to take off the masks. Time to get back to life. Let’s open up our businesses. And let’s — everyone go back to having as normal a life as we can,” Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz. said Friday on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher.”

Again, despite all the masking, and vaccines (which Joe, Kamala, and other Dems said wouldn’t happen quick, and they wouldn’t trust them), Delta and Omicron skyrocketed. So, this is totally about science, right?

In all these Democrat states that removed mask mandates, or mostly removed, the positivity rate is higher than before Omicron hit. Why didn’t they remove the mandates back during the summer of 2021? It wasn’t politically expedient.

NY and FL have similar populations (FL squeeze 2 years old median age) currently FL has a 400% higher total covid deaths on a 7 day average. Any idea why this might be? I think because of mandates . Others may say it just because God hates Florida. 90% of all Dems are vaccinated. Covid is killing almost exclusively the unvaccinated

Johnny, Johnny… Florida as of 2019 had about 2 million more in population than New York. Total covid deaths for Florida about 70,000. Total Covid deaths for New York about 66,700. Where in the hell do you come up with “400% higher total covid deaths than New York”? So we have 2 million more people in Florida with a total death count only 3300 over New York’s.

Mr Teach conclusion is politically expedient. More Americans are vaccinated or have survived an infection now than then. In any event, the Delta surge was in high gear in the summer of 2021, especially in rural US areas (low vaccination rates). Since the highly transmissible Omicron variant was circulating fall 2021, so was there really time to end masking??
Public health officials (and politicians) are gambling that Omicron is the last widespread, transmissible variant, but they could be wrong. Note that the latest surge is just now peaking in East Asia (S Korea, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, …). And yes, Americans are absolutely fatigued, sick and tired of Covid. Americans want to get back to normal.
But we’re pleased to see nuConnies concerned about the continued spread of Covid. Please recommend vaccinations and masking where appropriate!! America needs your help too!!
