On September 29, 2021, the National School Boards Association (NSBA), which claims to represent “90,000 school board members who govern our country’s 14,000 local public-school districts educating more than 50 million schoolchildren†across America, sent Joe Biden a letter. Their purpose was to warn our addled President that our nation’s schools are under the imminent threat of “domestic terrorism.â€
Consider the following highlights.
Dear Mr. President,
America’s public schools and its education leaders are under an immediate threat… NSBA believes immediate assistance is required… [Many] public-school officials are facing physical threats because of propaganda purporting the false inclusion of critical race theory within classroom instruction and curricula. This propaganda continues despite the fact that critical race theory is not taught in public schools…
[T]he classification of these heinous actions could be the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism… As such, NSBA requests a joint expedited review by the U.S. Departments of Justice, Education, and Homeland Security, along with the… FBI.
[Moreover] NSBA requests that [you] examine appropriate enforceable actions against these crimes… under… the PATRIOT Act in regards to domestic terrorism, the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, [and all other] applicable federal laws…
As threats grow and news of extremist hate organizations showing up at school board meetings is being reported, this is a critical time for a proactive approach to deal with this difficult issue …

Here’s the NSBA letter to President Biden. The letter also included examples of violence and threats. Clearly the offenders must be prosecuted. If a “Karen” or two end up in jail perhaps she and other right-wing “protesters” will think twice before making threats or attacking others. Perhaps but unlikely. Right-wingers are particularly frustrated these days and violence is their knee-jerk response to frustration. They know no other way. Look no further than the attack on the US Capitol on January 6 in response to trump losing the election. Look no further than the white supremacist Unite the Right (Jews Won’t Replace Us!) rally in Charlottesville Aug 2017.
Please don’t condone violence against public officials.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that you have not been watching meetings and only accept the word of the NSBA as to what is happening. If you took the time to read the citations within the letter, you’d find that “threats” such as the one you highlighted, are not “true threats” and were made by people looking to recall members of Boards. The recall is “we are coming after you,” not actual threats of violence.
However, even in rare cases where there are true threats, local governments and law enforcement agencies are taking appropriate actions. Good on them for doing so.
However, I didn’t hear you screaming about threats of violence when the left was making them against politicians. Maybe that was an oversight on your part.
I actually watch the three county school board meetings in my neck of the woods.
Two boards have actively decided that they can break the law when it comes to public comments (by not allowing comments at all as codified in state law.) One board decided that the comment “left leaning Democrat” was not allowed as it was “offensive” and the board doesn’t allow name calling. One woman stood up in a school board meeting and said she was called a “bitch” by a protestor. The Board Chair stopped her saying that language wasn’t allowed.
When it was pointed out that the Board had to allow those terms due to the First Amendment, and getting letters from the State Attorney to that effect, the Board said “we don’t care. It is our meeting and we will run it as we see fit.”
The Board then passed a mask mandate against state law.
As you can imagine, this angered parents and the community. Why does the School Board demand compliance with their rules, but won’t comply with laws and the Constitution?
What you are seeing is a frustration with elected officials who think that they are above everyone else.
For years and years, school boards and schools have asked for participation in their children’s education and now that that is happening, schools and elected officials are saying such participation is not wanted.
From former Virginia governor and Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe:
“I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”
As for masks, the data is all over the place and you know that. However, the CDC and the Waterloo University study say that face coverings are only at best 10% effective. When told of this, the local school board members said they didn’t care. Our group advised them that if you are going to make mandates for what people must wear, you have 1) have standards, 2) make the mandate appropriate for the level of protection and 3) provide the PPE itself.
The local school board refused to do any of the three.
And that gets back to the point as to why some people are angry: School Boards are making rules that are against the law and established regulations.
You are correct that threats of violence against elected officials is wrong just as threats of violence against anyone is wrong.
However, are you willing to step up to the plate and say that stalking an elected official into the bathroom is wrong? (It is against the law in Arizona.)
