Bummer: St. Andrews Golf Course Could Maybe Possibly Be Underwater By 2050

All because you drive your fossil fueled vehicle to the golf course and have an evil hotdog and syrupy soda at the turn

St. Andrews could be underwater by 2050, according to a new climate-change study

The Home of Golf could be underwater as soon as 2050, according to a new climate-change study.

The study, released by Climate Central—an organization comprised of leading scientists and journalists who study climate change’s impact on society—and analyzed by The Herald predicts large swaths of Scotland’s coastline could be submerged due to increased annual flooding and sea level rise. This includes St. Andrews Links, located in the town of St. Andrews on Scotland’s eastern coastline.

Climate Central published an interactive map to show which areas could be affected. It predicts a widening of the River Clyde, which would impact areas to the west of Glasgow, as well as damage to Dundee, Fife, Stirling and a number of other Scottish metropolitan areas.

St. Andrews’ Old Course is one of five Scottish courses in the Open Championship’s 10-course rota. The map also suggests two other Scottish rota courses—Carnoustie and Royal Troon, both located on the coast—could be severely impacted.

“As these maps incorporate big datasets, which always include some error” an explainer on Climate Central’s website reads, “these maps should be regarded as screening tools to identify places that may require deeper investigation of risk.”

Oh, wait, what was that? A disclaimer for their fearmongering? Anyhow, the height above sea level of St. Andrews proper is 82 feet. The golf course is located in an area which is much closer to sea level, but, the seas would have to rise around 5 feet to start inundating the course. Just north of St. Andrews is Aberdeen, which shows a virtually flat sea rise, at .25 feet per 100 years, data going back to 1862. Just south is North Shields, which shows .62 feet per 100 years, going back to 1895. Neither shows any sort of acceleration. Both are well below what is expected during a Holocene warm period. So, just more fearmongering.

But the good news is that the islands china made from dredging will also be under water taking their massive investment and strategic value to the bottom of the ocean. It’s almost as if no one told the Chinese about the certainty of rising sea levels.

  2. Dana says:

I will turn 97 on Earth Day of 2050, so I suspect I won’t care if a golf course is underwater.

    • Professor Hale says:

You never know. That might be a really good day to play golf. Plus, with all the vaccinations you are going to get, you may live for 200 years.

      • Dana says:

If I live to be 200, it will mean that I am really Vulcan, and Vulcans over 200 are susceptible to Bendii Syndrome, an incurable and terminal neurological degenerative illness, so, no thanks, I’ll just stay human, and die at the end of my human lifespan.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

It’s likely that many younger than 97 will care. And not just about St Andrews.

But why should we oldsters worry about what our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will endure, as long as we got ours.

      • Jl says:

You should worry when you have evidence to cause worrying

      • david7134 says:

Look at Jeff trying to appear that he is concerned about others, touching, and so false it makes you puke.

        • Kye says:

david7134, the guy who is so very concerned about “what our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will endure” as far as the weather is concerned fails to recognize what those same progeny will endure under his fascist/communist world government. While The Elwood worries if it will rain on those people he sets up a system where they will be enslaved by billionaires and oppressive poverty, have few rights, and be second class citizens to the preferred pigmentation. If they are allowed to exist at all. I spit on him and his false god of statism.

Herr The Kye, a white supremacist authoritarian and crony “capitalist” (authoritarian socialist) ignores science (still true even if you don’t believe it!) preferring white christian victimhood. Oppressors always complain when the oppressed demand equity. Always.

This is a “man” who claims to have collected $2 million from US taxpayers to get him through the pandemic.

He projects that human equity will result in the world he actually prefers, which is an authoritarian, white, christian nationalist plutocracy.

Spit all you want. But wear a mask.

Privileged, entitled American christian caucasians are terrified that they’ll be “replaced” by Jews, Muslims, Blacks, LGBQTs and Mexicans. They are frightened of losing the built-in advantages of being a white male in America.

I now reside in eastern Kentucky, an area subject to flooding, and I came about 7½ inches from losing my house in the record flooding earlier this month. It sort of focuses your mind, that no place on earth is safe from natural disaster.

The South, including your home state of Missouri, is particularly susceptible to tornadoes, and they strike at random. California, Hawai’i, from where my father’s family comes, and Alaska, can be struck by devastating earthquakes. Much of the West is subject to widespread wildfires. If devastating winter storms can hit Texas, they can hit anywhere. the Rt Rev Kye lives near Philadelphia, and you live near St Louis, so at any moment it is possible for you to be minding your own business and, the next second, have your head explode as some gang-banger with a great gun and a bad aim, shooting at someone else, sends you to your eternal reward.

If global warming climate change raises sea levels, we will deal with them as they happen. The loss of a golf course isn’t very high up on my list of concerns.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

No locale is perfect and each has risks and benefits.

Global warming is global, meaning that flooded golf courses in 2050 will be a minor problem. But pay attention to the projects coastal metropolises (metropoli?) are funding to offset higher tides and storm surges. An aside: Trump Inc successfully lobbied to built higher seawalls to protect one of his Irish seaside resort courses from rising seas as a result of global warming.

You and I are inland and little threatened by rising seas. My home is on higher ground and is not threatened by our frequent Mississippi, Meramec and Missouri River floods. But not everyone here has been so fortunate.

  3. Hairy says:

Poilico had an interesting article 5/23/16 on how Trump was filing to build a seawall at his golf course
    In County Clare Ireland
The application specifically mentions the future danger of climate change making the sea level rise

    • Jl says:

Climate change has been making seas rise for about 20,000 years, John.

    • david7134 says:

Gee, John, what a revelation. But try to milk it for the misdirection you are trying to create. Sure the climate is changing, has been doing so for at least 20,000 years. Now your idiotic implication is it has something to do with CO2, as that is what ignorant people are oh so worried about, but never proven. It was zero degrees in North Louisiana a few weeks ago, it has never been zero. That is totally against your CO2 model, but you will come up with some idiotic fake science to justify. Because the whole thing has nothing at all to do with climate concerns and is all about your desire for global communism. Why don’t you go peddle your concerns to China and India who are the major polluters.

  4. Jl says:

You should worry when you have evidence to cause worrying

  5. Jl says:

And again, the headline could be written as “St Andrews Golf course could not be under water by 2050”, and be just as factual.
