Conservatives routinely bash and swiftboat Democratic politicians who are also veterans, because they realize having served is important to the right-wing base. For example, George W. Bush was an honored veteran for defending Texas and Alabama from the Viet Cong but based on the lies from SVFT, a smear campaign financed by well-heeled Republicans, Senator John Kerry was a lying coward for his actual service in Southeast Asia.
