Philly Mayor Calls For Gun Control In Wake Of Shooting

Who is the criminal who shot 6 Philly police officers? (via Hot Air)

(Philly Inquirer) Police sources identified the gunman in a standoff at a Tioga apartment building that left six police officers injured as Maurice Hill, 36, a Philadelphia man with a lengthy history of gun convictions and of resisting attempts to bring him to justice.

Hill’s history in the adult criminal justice system began in 2001 when he was 18 and was arrested with a gun that had an altered serial number.

Public records show that he has been arrested about a dozen times since turning 18, and convicted six times on charges that involved illegal possession of guns, drug dealing, and aggravated assault. He has been in and out of prison; the longest sentence handed him came in 2010, when a federal judge gave him a 55-month term.

Fortunately, all 6 officers will be fine. But, of course

That goes to video, so, here’s for printed

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (D) called for increased gun control following an hours-long shootout between police and a gunman that wounded six officers.

“Our officers need help. They need help with gun control. They need help with keeping these weapons out of these people’s hands,” Kenney told reporters Wednesday night as the situation as ongoing.

“Our officers deserve to be protected and they don’t deserve to be shot at by a guy for hours with an unlimited supply of weapons and an unlimited supply of bullets. It’s disgusting and we have to do something about it.”

Kenney tore into both national and state lawmakers who he said were taking inadequate action on getting guns out of the hands of criminals, citing opposition from groups like the National Rifle Association (NRA).

“Whether it’s our six officers who were shot or it’s some 16-, 17-, 20-year-old kid on the streets of Philadelphia who gets shot with guns that shouldn’t be in people’s hands,” he said. “It’s aggravating. It’s saddening. And it’s something that we need to do something about.”

Enhanced background checks wouldn’t have worked. Nor would restricting magazine size nor banning “assault weapons.” Philadelphia is already top ten in the nation’s cities for gun control. It was already illegal for Hill to have a gun. Are we going to make it extremely illegal? He wouldn’t have passed a background check. So, Kenney’s idea is to make it more difficult for law abiding citizens?

How about cracking down on criminals? Democrats never seem to want to do that.

Living in a suburb outside of Philly I was splattered with Kenney on TV at 6PM and he was already hinting at gun control while his cops were in the house with the criminal.

I can tell you from personal experience that the gun laws in Philly are arbitrary, capricious, raaaaacist, and unconstitutional. More gun control laws are not the answer and haven’t been for years but the Democrats refuse to admit what the problem is: Their policies. They have created cesspools of desperately poor mostly minority people in urban areas, showered them with all kinds of free-bees for votes then let them to rot. The democrats never come up with a “leaving welfare” plan, just more welfare. They have CREATED generational welfare, generational out of wedlock births, fatherless families and gangs, drugs, crime and guns is the result. It’s all on their watch and nobody wants to say it! It’s like what happened when Trump called Baltimore “rat infested” suddenly it became about race. But everything with Democrats is about race as they have nothing else to propose.

They created the end to mental hospitals where many of the most vulnerable to violence could have been treated, they sue every time a POC is shot by a cop, ignore the crazy high murder rate in the ghetto which they created and refuse to keep violent criminals in jail.

The ghettoization of American urban areas happened well before “oppressive” gun laws. Look up redlining, contract buying, block busting, racial covenants. The US gov’t created urban ghettos.

“After a half century (or more), it’s not hard to see how we get to here from there: When you prevent a whole class of people from building wealth, accessing capital, or leaving impoverished areas, you guarantee cultural dysfunction and deep, generational poverty. When it comes to inner-city poverty—we built that.” – Jamelle Bouie

Some hack from the Gray Lady is whining about what his paper and the rest of the Lefties helped create when they realized once the Civil Rights Acts were passed, blacks would no longer need them.

Jeffery knows all this because he helped with it, too.

        Quite the race traitor.

Did the Civil Rights Acts solve all our race problems?

The “ghettoization” of urban areas occurred after WWII and accelerated after The Great Society. You should know that, we lived it. Oppressive gun laws were made primarily to keep gus out of the hands of blacks and date back to before the Civil War. Redlining had to do with bank loans, block busting had to do with the early efforts of radical communists to break up white neighborhoods and sew discontent. Remember, people tend to gather with “their own” and that is something leftists can’t abide. If there is no friction then there is no chance for them to control.

The U.S. government may have financed ghettos with assorted welfare schemes but the implementation was left to the Democrat operative on the ground, i.e. the local mayors and city councils of Democrat held enclaves. I watched my Ward Leader father ans the corrupt Democrat machine in Philadelphia take that beautiful city and turn half into a black ghetto/Hispanic barrio and force “white flight” to the suburbs. It was NOT a bug, it was the PLAN all along! I was there, I know.

American Communists just keep checking off the same old Cold War task list. They don’t even remember why they were all supposed to be for Gun control. It’s not like it really helps their agenda today. It was all about helping the agenda of the Soviet Union to weaken America. Modern Democrat/Communists are like those apocryphal Japanese soldiers found in Asian jungles still fighting WW2 long after 1945. They don’t know the war is over and that they lost.

They are always for more gun control because they have always been for more gun control. They are always for higher taxes because they have always been for higher taxes. They are always for more benefits for the “poor” because they have always been for more benefits for the poor.

They really have no cognitive ability to know how much is enough or to set rational goals that are any benefit to anyone.

America already has background checks for gun purchases. America already has laws against any sort of using guns to harm other people. America already restricts what sort of guns may be lawfully owned and marketed.

Modern American communists need to wake up and realize that a weak America is no longer a goal they should be blindly trying to implement. But the autopilot is too strong. Academia and political elites can never admit they were wrong all along, so they keep checking off the tasks on the same old Cold War marching orders.

As an aside, I find it very amusing that American Communists decry “Russian interference” in American politics, while still applying Soviet agendas in everything they do.

My article appears at 5:00 PM.

The fact is that Mr Hill should already have been in prison. In 2013 he was sentenced, despite his long and violent rap sheet, to seven years probation for perjury. When picked up on a parole violation, another judge could have revoked his probation and sent him to the big house, but did not.

Between 2007 and 2009, six Philadelphia Police officers were murdered in the line of duty, and in each case the killers had been treated leniently by prosecutors or judges or parole boards. When law enforcement fails to treat criminals seriously, and they go on to kill someone, those law enforcement officials need to be held accountable, and go to jail right along with the killer.

If we start holding public officials accountable, we’ll see a real reduction in crime, as criminals will be treated the way they should be treated, as harshly as the law allows.

    here’s an idea…borrow from Sweden’s drunk driving laws….

if you are a felon bared from owning a gun, getting caught gets you 5 years hard time, no parole the first time, 25 years the second time, and executed the third time. might make felons think about it a little more.

  6. TxNick77 says:

If leftist judges and prosecutors wouldn’t plea bargain down the charges against repeat offenders, and would keep the arseholes confined for the maximum permitted for their crimes when convicted, the crime rate in the inner cities would drop. A drop in crime and the business people would open new stores in the area. New stores = new jobs. New jobs = better living standards & less welfare. And the cycle of cradle to welfare to prison would be broken.

This is why I am totally against the recent “criminal justice reform” that was signed and implemented.
