NY Times Wonders What Comes Next After Progressive Activists Push Dems To The Left On ‘Climate Change’

Don’t forget, progressivism is known as “nice fascism”. It doesn’t mean they’re nice, it means that they’re doing this for your own good. Funny that they never realize that the bad parts will effect their own lives

Progressive Activists Have Pushed Democrats to the Left on Climate Issues. Now What?

In April, young activists with the Sunrise Movement, a liberal environmental group, held a rally here at Wayne State University to champion radical steps to curb climate change. Their aim: to get Democratic presidential candidates on record supporting the Green New Deal, which ties traditional goals, like reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with social ones, like ending income inequality and providing free health care.

Last week, those candidates were in Detroit for the second round of debates, and the Sunrise activists and other progressives were back, too, taking a victory lap. Since the spring rally, 16 of the 24 Democratic presidential hopefuls have signed onto Sunrise’s Green New Deal goals.

What once seemed like progressive moonshots on climate have now become a critical litmus test for moderates and liberal presidential candidates. The activists have helped shift the Democratic center of gravity further to the left on climate. And now they face the question that often comes to groups that rise swiftly in influence: What next?

Now what in the headline really means what’s next. And what’s next is a massive lurch to the left (which is really to the right on the political scale, into Authoritarianism)

The June and July debates have demonstrated this influence: Left-wing positions dominated discussion of issues like health care, immigration, free public college and reparations for black Americans, leaving many liberals rejoicing and plenty of centrist Democrats fretting. The proof that liberal activism is succeeding, the grass-roots leaders said, was that most candidates dared not dismiss their concerns.

See, they aren’t here to be nice

“Our job isn’t to be nice,” said Alexandra Rojas, the executive director of Justice Democrats, the progressive group that has roiled Washington by challenging more centrist congressional Democrats from the left.

What’s missing in the “what’s next?” is what happens when the general election comes around, and the Democrat candidates have moved way, way, way to the “left”. These people think Biden and Harris are too moderate. How will this play in said general election? When Trump is talking about good jobs, a great economy, loving America, they’ll be up there talking about why everything about America will have to change because America is bad. And, to bring the Green New Deal back in

Rhiana Gunn-Wright, the policy director of New Consensus, the think tank that helped write the Green New Deal resolution, said she wanted politicians to back the full-throated resolution, including its social goals.

“I think something that people miss about the Green New Deal,” Ms. Gunn-Wright said, “it’s about the survival of us as a species and a planet, but it’s also about our survival as a country, which we know that inequality and structural inequity is literally tearing apart our society.”

“We think that if we have a society, even if it’s green, if we have a country that’s just as stratified as it was before, it’s a failure,” she said.

Ms. Rojas added: “This can’t just be an economic or a climate plan. It’s got to be a just one and we have to talk about indigenous communities. We have to talk about black and brown communities that were historically left out of the original New Deal.”

Does anyone think this will move the needle for Independents and squishy Trump hating Republicans to vote for the Democrat? Might it cause moderate Democrats to just stay home? They might not vote for Trump, but, they won’t vote Democrat for President.

William Teach: Don’t forget, progressivism is known as “nice fascism”.

Uh, no it’s not. There are only 500 references to the phrase “nice facism” in all of Googledom, a word we thought we had just made up, but which is found listed over 20,000 times on Google.

As for the larger point, the left can certainly be just as authoritarian as the right.

GOOGLE is so far left they are in bed with Lenin and Stalin. The same company being sued by a democratic candidate for taking down her advertising for 6 hours immediately after she blasted K. Harris knowing that people would google her and donate to her cause.

Google should be broken into a dozen units. It is the anti-Christ of the world, choosing instead to work with China and Russia instead of the USA which is generous enough to host the company because its employees are concerned about the affairs of the USA. As if China and Russia’s blatant human rights violations and mass pollution and lack of any cohesive Green plan is so much better than the United States. The very fact you use Google informs us all as to how tightly cinched you have your own blinders in place.

Comical that anyone on the left would dare to use google as a reference when debating. Secondly they are purging anything that bashes leftist mantra.

      • Zachriel says:

We post evidence. You say “Is not!”

Doom and Gloom: GOOGLE is so far left they are in bed with Lenin and Stalin.

That’s just silly. The fact is that virtually no one uses the term “nice facism”. Maybe if you keep saying it, then eventually it will catch on.

TEACH/formwiz typed: “progressivism is known as “nice fascism””

Correctly, you might type that some right-wing pundits assert that progressivism is “nice fascism”. Is conservatism “not-nice fascism”?

Didn’t trump win in 2016 by scaring white Americans? He ranted about how America was no longer great and only he could make it great again. Fortunately for him, the economy has continued its straight line recovery since the Great Recession but is now starting to stall. No doubt, he has made conservative whites feel great, although he has not helped their situations.

The “concern trolling” by the right is a joy to watch. They are worried about the poor Dems, LOL. Just as they are worried about the poor working stiffs.

The 2020 election is about trump. If decent Americans are tired of his shite, he’s gone. Hint: Decent Americans are tired of his shite.

Which party is demanding an authoritarian state? That would be the Democrats.

Fascism: Wiki which is suspect at best but here it is: Fascism (/ˈfæʃɪzəm/) is a form of radical right-wing, authoritarian ultranationalism[1][2] characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, and strong regimentation of society and of the economy[3] which came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe.[4]

      I wonder which party is:

1.) Demanding a total rework of our economy?
2.) Seeking strong regimentation of our society?
3.) Suppressing the opposition including bans from social media and total intolerance of any version of reality that does not support their own.

As for worrying about the working stiffs. 99 percent of the Right are WORKING STIFFS. I have always found it incredibly funny that the left believes the right simply sets around and tries to figure out ways to make the 100 LEFTIST billionaires and the 10,000 Leftist Millionaires Rich, while ignoring every other problem in the world.

Awesome brainwashing of the masses on the plantation but extremely far from the truth.

That specifically excludes the Democrats, who are not radical right-wing, or ultranationalist. The Democrats, as a whole, don’t advocate authoritarianism, but do advocate a larger role for government, especially with regards to healthcare. Republicans are not pikers in that regard, and have advocating a larger role for government, especially with regards to the military, and laws against abortion and, until recently, sodomy and other so-called deviant sexual practices.

        • Doom and Gloom says:

          Wrong on every account Zach.

Democrats are in fact calling for authoritarianism. that is evident in their desire to tell you what to own, buy, sell and how to use it. Examples are College campuses completely dominated by leftist professors telling you what to believe and entire campuses going on strike and demanding a professor be fired for daring to speak conservative language.
Democrats want to eliminate Unions by bringing in millions of illegals and making it so unions have no power. In fact the very act of defying the federal government and telling all their citizens that they are sanctuary cities is in and of its self authoritarian. Once again telling their own citizens that they must disobey the federal law in favor of local law which are laws they themselves passed over the years.
Proclaiming everyone a racist including people in their own party is authoritarian. IF YOU DO NOT tow the party line. You are expelled. Tulsi Gabbard dared to speak the truth about K. Harris and she was promptly declared a racist and a Russian agent working with Trump.
The larger role of the government as expressed in the Green New Deal and now being championed by almost every democratic candidate is an entire rework of society which includes and I quote:

IT IS THE DUTY OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO CREATE A GREEN NEW DEAL

The Green new deal then radically changes the United States including REEDUCATION of all people to conform to the tenets of the NEW DEAL.

Not only is the left Authoritarian but it has taken the Communist manifesto and rewritten it and forced its own candidates to sign on and if this were to ever pass they would FORCE all Americans to do a `1000 things. Not a couple things like most bills do.

ObamaCare FORCED Americans to buy a product. Authoritarianism at its finest. They continually want to pass laws which FORCE Americans to behave in a certain way. This is not only fascist but Authoritarian in so many ways.

People have the right to strike or speak out. That’s anti-authoritarian. Go to another university, or start your own, or take them to court.

Doom and Gloom: Democrats want to eliminate Unions by bringing in millions of illegals and making it so unions have no power.

Immigrants have always been the backbone of the unions.
Republicans have undermined unions for years, while Democrats have generally supported unions.

Doom and Gloom: In fact the very act of defying the federal government and telling all their citizens that they are sanctuary cities is in and of its self authoritarian.

Um, that’s anti-authoritarian, a component of federalism. The federal government can’t co-opt local governments to enforce federal law.

Doom and Gloom: Proclaiming everyone a racist including people in their own party is authoritarian. IF YOU DO NOT tow the party line. You are expelled.

That’s anti-authoritarian. Political parties are private organizations. They can be anti-racist if they choose.

Doom and Gloom: ObamaCare FORCED Americans to buy a product.

No. They would have to have healthcare insurance, or pay a small tax. That tax is currently $0, which is hardly authoritarian.

We’ll have to admit, the right is getting more and more silly.
