Special Snowflake Activists Want George Washington Mural Removed

Remember when they said they just wanted everything Confederacy removed, and it was beyond silly to think they’d want to get rid of things featuring Founding Fathers like George Washington?

Activists want a high school mural removed. Can its modern meaning overshadow the artist’s intentions?

For nearly a century, a massive mural by painter Victor Arnautoff titled “The Life of Washington” has lined the hallways of San Francisco’s George Washington High School.

It may not be there much longer.

Washington High School’s Reflection and Action Working Group — an ad-hoc committee made up students, school employees and local artists, historians and Native Americans — believes the mural “glorifies slavery, genocide, colonization, manifest destiny, white supremacy (and) oppression,” according to a statement published in local media.

The group reportedly identified two panels as especially offensive. One shows Washington pointing westward next to the body of a dead Native American (pictured above). The other depicts slaves working in the fields of Mount Vernon.

Because the work “traumatizes students and community members,” the group’s statement concluded that “the impact of this mural is greater than its intent ever was.” They are campaigning for its removal.

Of course they are. Everything “traumatizes” them. Rather than understanding history, learning from it, they want to not just hide from it, but remove it from their view, and everyone else’s view.

The rest of the article is interesting, in that the authors argue against removing art, books, etc, that trigger the little snowflakes.

Just rename everything for MLK and be done with it.

    • formwiz says:

Can’t do it. He liked girls, remember?

I guess we’ll have to name everything after the bunny suit.

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Once Donald Jesus tRump is fully in charge, you can name everything after the Kloseted Kleagle from Kleveland (KKK formwiz).

I thought you had sworn off name-calling King Kleagle?

        • formwiz says:

Closest I’ve ever been to the Klan was driving through Pulaski TN.

Although word is they’re the Redneck Mafia, arranging SCUBA lessons with log chains.

And Donald John Trump is fully in charge.

          • formwiz says:

BTW You do know abortion’s patron saint, Margaret Sanger, was the Klan’s pinup girl.

So I guess that makes you one of the house Negoes.

I take it you perform at all the PP meeting doings songs and dances and snappy patter.

Agree with TEACH and the authors on this.

The murals should not be removed as they are examples of American history expressed through art. In this case we see a representation of westward expansion and the genocide of the Native Americans (American Indians) and also that many of our founding fathers were slave owners.

We need to teach both the good and the bad of our history, not an uncritical hagiography. We don’t learn by hiding information.

Keep the murals and explain them.

The article made another point, and one of my pet peeves. Condemnation of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for containing the n-word numerous times in reference to Jim, the escaped slave. The central themes of Huckleberry Finn were anti-racist and anti-slavery.

Here’s where Huck wrote a letter (paper), doing the right and legal thing, telling Jim’s “owner” where to find him, an action that would keep Huck from going to hell, since “People that acts as I’d been acting about [Jim] goes to everlasting fire.”

“I felt good and all washed clean of sin for the first time I had ever felt so in my life, and I knowed I could pray now. But I didn’t do it straight off, but laid the paper down and set there thinking – thinking how good it was all this happened so, and how near I come to being lost and going to hell. And went on day, and in the night-time, sometimes moonlight, sometimes storms, and we a floating along, talking, and singing, and laughing. But somehow I couldn’t seem to strike no places to harden me against him, but only the other kind. I’d see him standing my watch on top of his’n, stead of calling me, so I could go on sleeping; and see him how glad he was when I come back out of the fog; and when I come to him agin in the swamp, up there where the feud was; and such-like times; and would always call me honey, and pet me, and do everything he could think of for me, and how good he always was; and at last I struck the time I saved him by telling the men we had smallpox aboard, and he was so grateful, and said I was the best friend old Jim ever had in the world, and the only one he’s got now; and then I happened to look around, and see that paper.

It was a close place. I took it up, and held it in my hand. I was a trembling, because I’d got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: “All right, then, I’ll go to hell”- and tore it up.

It was awful thoughts, and awful words, but they was said. And I let them stay said; and never thought no more about reforming. I shoved the whole thing out of my head; and said I would take up wickedness again, which was in my line, being brung up to it, and the other warn’t. And for a starter, I would go to work and steal Jim out of slavery again…”

    But not bunny suit’s way.

The American Indians (they’re no more nor less native than we are) did a dandy job wreaking genocide on each other and, as agents of the French, on the white man, but, if the redskins were the victims of genocide, why are there so many now?

Unlike the Indians, the white man took prisoners and put them on protected lands where they would thrive on the joys that are socialism. /sarc

As for slavery, it was a perfectly acceptable practice at the time, as was bonded indenture, the white version of it. It was also ended by white men in a bloody war. The people who pushed slavery are the same who push the Welfare Plantation to this day and the bunny suit remains one of their Stepin Fetchits.

PS Huckleberry Finn was written by a Confederate veteran.

It has less to do with slavery and racism (it lampoons the latter), than it does about manhood.

Jim is only one of the two real men in the book and it’s Jim who teaches Huck to be a real man.

The bunny suit might know that if he’d actually read the book.

The Klumsy Kleagle from Kleveland (KKK) tells more lies.

Hey, I thought you had given up name-calling? Guess not.

And what would you know about manhood?? You might gain some insight if you’d actually read the book.

      • formwiz says:

Clearly, NAMBLA’s man in St Lou hasn’t.

As for manhood, I’\m not the molester in this discussion.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

You and Lil talk about molestation so much we’re convinced that’s how you met. How old was he when you started?

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

      Kleveland Kleagle,

Samuel Clemens was a Rebel for 2 weeks, then left.

He also described the Civil War as: “A blot on our history, but not as great a blot as the buying and selling of Negro souls.”

      • formwiz says:

He left because he realized he could get shot. (Roughing It)

        When? Citation, please.
