Sri Lankan Bombings Blamed On Local Islamic Extremist Group

Interestingly, many, many news outlets are suddenly OK with mentioning that the group is Islamic, when they used to go out of their way to avoid mentioning that

Sri Lanka on edge after local Islamic militant group blamed for Easter Sunday attacks: report

Sri Lanka took drastic steps Monday to crack down on new potential terror threats by blocking social media and arresting more than a dozen after a series of suicide bombings allegedly carried out by a domestic radical Islamic group ripped through its capital on Easter Sunday.

The country’s health minister said the attacks, which killed at least 290 and injured more than 500, were carried out by seven suicide bombers from a local militant group named National Thowheed Jamath. Experts cited by The New York Times said the group promotes an Islamic terrorist ideology. Police said 13 suspects in connection with the bombings have been arrested.

“These attacks appear to be quite different and look as if they came right out of the ISIS, Al Qaeda, global militant jihadist playbook, as these are attacks fomenting religious hatred by attacking multiple churches on a high religious holiday,” Anne Speckhard, the director of the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism, told the Times.

All of the bombers were Sri Lankan citizens, but authorities suspect foreign links, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said at a news conference.

Six nearly simultaneous blasts took place in the morning at the shrine and the Cinnamon Grand, Shangri-La and Kingsbury hotels in Colombo, as well as at two churches outside Colombo. Two more blasts occurred a few hours later outside Colombo — one at a guesthouse, the other near an overpass.

What is known at the moment is that 290 people were murdered and over 500 wounded in the Easter Sunday attack, which saw coordinated, simultaneous, detonations at three churches and three hotels by seven suicide bombers. Twenty four people have been arrested in connection with the attack, and there were apparent warnings back on April 11th about attacks from the Islamist group. The NY Times also notes

The State Department said that terrorist groups “continue plotting possible attacks in Sri Lanka” and raised its travel advisory to warn visitors about potential threats.

It said terrorists could attack “with little or no warning,” and listed several potential targets, including tourist spots, transportation centers, markets, malls, government offices, hotels and places of worship.

The travel advisory level was raised to “exercise increased caution,” the second lowest of four levels. It had previously been at the lowest level, “exercise normal precautions.”

In a separate article, the Times also suddenly discovers that “religious minorities”, ie, Christians and Buddhists, are increasing under attack from Islamist extremists, including those in governmental positions.

Suicide bombers often leave other bombs behind so when people rush out they face a second bomb

It’s horrific.

Surely they were all wearing MAGA hats and shouting Allah Trump as they blew themselves up. Surely it can’t be radical muslims. To hear the press and the left tell it, the only evil people in this world are angry white men.

  2. acethepug says:

Funny how much less the coverage is for this compared to Christchurch …

  3. Professor Hale says:

Looks like a power failure to me. Was Sri Lanka doing any renovations?

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Are you implying that the Notre Dame fire was set by Muslims?

Oh, that’s right. It’s just a joke. With hundreds dead. Ha.

      • formwiz says:

I’ll say it again, the Frawgs now say it was a computer glitch.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

The white Christian rector (or Frawg, as you call him) of Notre Dame, said it could have been a computer glitch, without elaborating.

The professional investigators think it was accidental, and the investigation continues.

No radical protestant, Buddhist or Islamic sect has claimed responsibility.

        • Professor Hale says:

Yep. Those 800 year old computers are real tinder-boxes. Only two settings: Do nothing or burst into flames. They probably shouldn’t have hooked up the computer to the “start fire in the attic” circuit.

Teach typed: “In a separate article, the Times also suddenly discovers that “religious minorities”, ie, Christians and Buddhists, are increasingly under attack from Islamist extremists, including those in governmental positions.”

That’s not exactly what the article said, e.g., Buddhists are a 70% majority in Sri Lanka. Hindus are a majority in India. Rohingya Muslims and practicing Christians are persecuted in Myanmar (Burma) by the Buddhist majority. The Rohingya Muslims have been the target of ethnic cleansing.

And vile Islamist terrorists continue their attacks on decent people. What religious belief can think it’s OK to strap bombs to your adherents and murder hundreds of innocent children, women and men?

This coordinated attack underlines that governments need to heighten their surveillance of terrorist organizations.

    • Kye says:

Elwood, are you once again trying to minimize the wanton hate and murder perpetrated by Mohammadans throughout the world by suggesting the Buddhists do it too? I’m 68 years old and that’s the first time I heard of Buddhists organized to persecute anybody. I’m skeptical of what they consider “persecution”. Could it be discrimination instead?

The coordinated attack underlines that governments need to forbid access to their countries by religious fanatics who are driven to murder or convert the entire world by their “prophet”.

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

        Kye,

Yes, Buddhists do it too. Ask the Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar if there are extremist Buddhists. Or the Tamil of Sri Lanka. Ask the Muslim minority in India.

Every major religion has exhibited repression, persecution and violence against others.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism_and_violence#Regional_examples

But this is not to excuse the Islamist radical murderers.

The Islamist extremists are worse today. They have raised local or national persecution to the level of coordinated international terrorism.

Let me repeat that: The Islamist extremists are worse.

But your plan to ban all Muslims will only make matters worse. We can’t punish all members of a religion because of the violent acts of a few. In the US, many terror attacks are committed by white nationalists – attacks on women’s health clinics are committed by Christian extremists – certainly you don’t blame the violence on all Christians, do you?

Fortunately, suicide bombings are not common in the US, and we do a good job of tamping down radical Islamic violence here.

All governments need to be mindful of all potential terror threats. We cannot be complacent.

        • Mangoldielocks says:

The major problem with your thesis Elwood is that they blew up Christians and Tourists. Both of which were not persecuting them in anyway.

          right?

Or are you now saying the Christians are murdering muslims in Sri Lanka? And all the tourists came to watch?

          GOT it TIN FOIL ALERT!!

        • Kye says:

My plan to ban all Mohammadans is not to punish anybody, it’s to eliminate a threat. If I wanted to punish them I’d put them in concentration camps like communists do. Or murder them like they do to everyone else. I don’t want that. I just don’t want them here. They add nothing positive to America, will never assimilate to Western Culture , hate us and their entire cult is based on either converting or killing anyone who won’t join.

When “Christian extremists” as you like to call them commit terror attacks on Planned Parenthood and other abortion mills they DO NOT DO IT WITH THE CONSENT OR PARTICIPATION OF CHRISTIANITY. There is nothing in Christianity directing them to murder other people nor is that taught in any Christian church. Islam is the exact opposite. You’re willing to believe some radical acting in a non Christian way but deny it when a radical acts in a totally Mohammedan way.

As you noted suicide bombings are not common in the US so far but if we keep allowing thousands, tens of thousands and millions of the Muslim practitioners of terror in to the US that will change. Guaranteed. Everywhere the Mohammadans have a large minority or a majority is a shithole. Don’t make America a shithole.

          • Elwood P. Dowd says:

            Kye,

I no longer make the truthful but pointless argument that Islam does not condone murder. And similar to Islam, Christianity has a number of sects with varying levels of fundamentalism. Are there Christian sects in the US that call abortion murder?

Trump is already making America a shithole.

    • formwiz says:

      English translation –

Ooh, see that little piggy, flying up there?

And vile Islamist terrorists continue their attacks on decent people. What religious belief can think it’s OK to strap bombs to your adherents and murder hundreds of innocent children, women and men?

Gee whiz, we’ve said that before only to be called Islamophobes.

Jeffery will now put on his worm suit because he sure has turned.

      • Kye says:

I think Elwood in his own way tries to differentiate between the “vile Islamist Terrorists” and their support group, the “peace loving” Muslim hordes. Except that without the financial, military and logistical support of their “religion of peace” members the terrorists would have long ago been annihilated. One one blows himself up his work is done, but the support group keeps creating more and more “Islamic terrorists” and they are the ones we need to address.

America out of the Middle East and Middle Easterners out of America.

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

        Dutcher,

One can condemn extremist violence without condemning the religion. See the difference? Of course you don’t.

We suppose you sit around all day in your bare suit crafting bon mots. How gross you must be.

You have an Ed.D., amIright? And insist everyone call you Dr. Dutcher.
