Global warming cooks up ‘a different world’ over 3 decades
We were warned.
On June 23, 1988, a sultry day in Washington, James Hansen told Congress and the world that global warming wasn’t approaching — it had already arrived. The testimony of the top NASA scientist, said Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, was “the opening salvo of the age of climate change.â€
Thirty years later, it’s clear that Hansen and other doomsayers were right. But the change has been so sweeping that it is easy to lose sight of effects large and small — some obvious, others less conspicuous.
Earth is noticeably hotter, the weather stormier and more extreme. Polar regions have lost billions of tons of ice; sea levels have been raised by trillions of gallons of water. Far more wildfires rage.
Over 30 years — the time period climate scientists often use in their studies in order to minimize natural weather variations — the world’s annual temperature has warmed nearly 1 degree (0.54 degrees Celsius), according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And the temperature in the United States has gone up even more — nearly 1.6 degrees.
Um. No. The Earth’s temperature has gone up 1.5 F since 1850. Slowly. But, even if we were to believe these numbers, which include a Pause, a time of statistically insignificant warming lasting over 18 years, it still doesn’t prove anthropogenic causation from greenhouse gases.
Warming hasn’t been just global, it’s been all too local. According to an Associated Press statistical analysis of 30 years of weather, ice, fire, ocean, biological and other data, every single one of the 344 climate divisions in the Lower 48 states — NOAA groupings of counties with similar weather — has warmed significantly, as has each of 188 cities examined.
The effects have been felt in cities from Atlantic City, New Jersey, where the yearly average temperature rose 2.9 degrees in the past 30 years, to Yakima, Washington, where the thermometer jumped a tad more. In the middle, Des Moines, Iowa, warmed by 3.3 degrees since 1988.
That’s called the Urban Heat Island effect, as well as land use.
“T-shirt weather in January, that never used to happen when I was a child,†Shook said. When Buel Mattix bought his heating and cooling system company 15 years ago in Salida, he had maybe four air conditioning jobs a year. Now he’s got a waiting list of 10 to 15 air conditioning jobs long and may not get to all of them.
There’s phrase for that: Indian summer. It’s been around for a long time. And, even if this happens more, it’s not proof of CO2 being the control knob.
“Thirty years ago, we may have seen this coming as a train in the distance,†NOAA’s Arndt said. “The train is in our living room now.â€
Of course climate change is real.

According to GISTEMP, the temperature increased 0.54C in the past 30 years. HADCRUT shows a 0.6C increase. This period also covers the “pause”.
And scientific theories are not proven. As evidence accumulates in support of the theory, and with no contradicting evidence, it becomes less and less reasonable to discount the theory. The theory of evolution is an example. It’s not proven to be true but is widely accepted. Regarding global warming, there have been no reasonable countervailing theories offered to explain why the Earth has been warming so rapidly.
You blamed warming on the urban heat island effect, but only used cities as examples.
And the Arctic has warmed faster than the Earth’s average.
Depends on what it’s compared to.

The Earth has only recently (in geological terms) come out of a glacial period, and is in what real paleoclimatologists call an “interglacial.”
That means we’re between periods of extreme glacial cover colloquially referred to as “ice ages.” In fact, we are IN an ice age, but experiencing a — deep breath now — pause in that ice age, during which the Earth gets warmer.
Until it doesn’t.
You don’t measure the temperature of the Earth in decades if you expect to be taken seriously, Jeffrerererey (though I doubt you do anyway). You measure it in millennia.
Indeed, the Holocene is an interglacial period during a what is considered an ice age. But there is not constant warming during interglacial periods until the glaciers suddenly reappear.
The Holocene period has been in a state of gradual cooling for the past 5000-6000 years in which the global average had dropped about 1.3F. It has warmed at least that much in the past 100 years. Interestingly, the whole of human civilizations evolved during the 12,000 year Holocene.
There is no scientific basis to expect the current period of rapid warming to stop.
Why is the Earth warming now? Scientists who study such things are convinced by the evidence that it’s mostly because of increased greenhouse gases from humans burning fossil fuels.

Well, if we’re talking scientific method, then we need to address the nasty little reality that any critique of data or methods wrt global whatevering was studiously ignored.
And evolution has a great many holes in it. Enough to cast all kinds of doubt. Darwin himself conceded it.
Using evolution as a justification for global nonsense is really walking on thin ice.
