Media Seems Rather Shocked That A Temporary Program Would Be Deemed Temporary

Many outlets are running pieces which seemed surprised, even shocked that the Trump administration would finally end a program which is explained in the name

U.S. to end temporary residence for nearly 60,000 Haitians

The Trump administration has given nearly 60,000 Haitians with provisional legal residency in this country 18 months to leave, announcing Monday that it will not renew the Temporary Protected Status that has allowed them to remain here for more than seven years.

The decision came after the Department of Homeland Security determined that the “extraordinary conditions” justifying their presence in the United States following a 2010 earthquake “no longer exist,” according to a senior administration official.

“Since the 2010 earthquake, the number of displaced people in Haiti has decreased by 97 percent,” acting homeland security secretary Elaine Duke said in a statement. “Significant steps have been taken to improve the stability and quality of life for Haitian citizens, and Haiti is able to safely receive traditional levels of returned citizens.”

It’s all in the name: Temporary Protected Status. They’ve been given 18 months to get their affairs in order and head back home.

But the Trump administration has repeatedly noted that the program was meant to be temporary, not a way for people to become long-term legal residents of the United States. Administration officials have said that decisions on further extensions would be made on the basis of whether initial justifications for protection still exist.

That’s the point of temporary. This applies to many other groups, such as Nicaraguans, Hondurans, Salvadorans, and others.

“It appears ideology won over a practical application of the law,” said Kevin Appleby, senior director of the New York-based Center for Migration Studies.

Rocio Saenz, executive vice president of the Service Employees International Union, which claims thousands of members living here under TPS, called the decision “heartbreaking, and harmful in every way.”

Remember, these same people go apoplectic when the U.S. gets involved militarily around the world to protect people. I guess they only care when we bring in vast loads of people who do not speak our language, do not share our culture or values, have little in the way of 1st world skills, and will essentially be wards of the state.

So treating a program with “Temporary” in its name as temporary, is “ideology” now.

Clearly Mr. Appleby knows the meaning of neither word.

What’s in a name, they called it the “Affordable” Care Act after all…
