Team Obama Finalizing Rules On Expanding Overtime Rules

It’s laudable that Team Obama is attempting to increase wages for workers. Too bad they have no idea what they’re doing, because most of them, including O, have never worked in the private sector and never had to balance a spreadsheet, have never had to pay workers, never looked at a profit/loss sheet

(Money) If you’re a salaried worker making under $47,000 a year, you could be in luck: A new rule could make you eligible for overtime pay.

The new rule, expected to be passed by the Labor Department as early as this week, would make some management, administrative and professional employees eligible for overtime pay when they work more than 40 hours a week, USA Today reported. Currently, such workers who earn more than $26,660 a year are exempt from getting overtime, but a new rule proposed by the department last summer would raise that threshold to $50,400.

However, some legal experts say the final version of the regulation likely places the threshold closer to a salary of $47,000—meaning that 5 million salaried workers are expected to be eligible for overtime under the rule. The change would most directly affect the service industry, particularly workers in hotels and restaurants, Gary Chaison, a professor of labor relations at Clarkson University, told Marketplace.

Here’s the thing: if you accept a management position, one which is salaried, companies usually expect you to work more than 40 hours a week with no OT. That’s just the nature of business. I certainly agree with the rule on those making under $26,660, because that is clearly an attempt by businesses to get a lot of work out of a low wage worker without paying them properly. If you’re salary is $45,000 a year? That’s a bit different

Indeed, there could be a raise on the horizon for the approximately 1.2 million Americans that the Labor Department estimates will receive increased wages or a higher base salary as a result of the rule change. However, the bad news is a large number of small businesses are expected to instruct their employees to work no more than 40 hours a week because they can’t handle the additional costs.

To account for the productivity loss, these companies will likely hire part-time workers or cut the base pay of affected employees. Others will switch salaried workers to hourly employees and ask them to track their hours, according to the National Federation of Independent Business.

There are consequences to mucking around with the private sector, making Governmental demands, and they so often do not turn out well for the workers the rules are supposed to help.

I’m not clear why the govt has any say or influence in this issue whatsoever.

Here is a partial list of companies that Obama has worked for
1975 or 1976 — ice cream scooper, Baskin-Robbins — Honolulu — Obama claims to have lost his taste for ice cream during this, his first job, the duration of which is not publicly known.

Date unknown — deli counter clerk, business name unknown — Honolulu — Obama had a summer job at a deli counter in Hawaii, making sandwiches, his spokesman said during the presidential campaign.

1980 — gift shop sales clerk, business name unknown — Honolulu — Obama worked at a gift shop in Hawaii selling island souvenirs the summer after his freshman year at Occidental College in California.

Sometime between 1981-1983 — construction worker, business name unknown — New York — Obama cleared a construction site for a summer on Manhattan’s Upper West Side while attending Columbia University, the Associated Press reported. Obama referred to this job in Dreams From My Father .

Sometime between 1981-1983 — position unknown, company unknown — New York — During his years at Columbia University, Obama worked one summer for a private company processing health records of either police or firefighters, his spokesman said during the presidential campaign.
Sometime between 1981-1983 — telemarketer, company unknown — New York — During one school year at Columbia, Obama was a telemarketer in midtown Manhattan selling New York Times subscriptions over the phone, his spokesman said during the presidential campaign.

1989 — summer associate, Hopkins & Sutter — Obama held this job the summer between his first and second years of law school.

1990 — summer associate, Sidley & Austin — After his second year of law school Obama was a summer associate for one of the world’s oldest and largest law firms, where he met Michelle Robinson, his future wife.
The GOP controlled Congress has an approval rating 1/3 that of Obama, why the hell aren’t they doing anything on the economy? All they do is try and repeal Obamacare (50+times) and waste time on BENGAZZI!!! hearings

Dude, I’ve worked construction for almost forty f(ornicating) years, and I’m still in construction, producing ready-mixed concrete these days, but in the past I have poured and finished concrete, run equipment, shoveled, worked as an electrician’s helper, tied steel, worked on high steel, and a bunch of other stuff, and I can guaran-damn-tee you that a pansy like Barack Hussein Obama never did anything that involved physical labor.

  4. Jeffery says:

    Dana,

That’s just stupid, even by your low standards. Of course Obama could have worked as a laborer at a construction site for a summer. At ain’t exactly rocket surgery, nor is it that demanding physically. It’s picking up junk and tossing it into dumpsters.

Anyway, is it really that wrong to try to get more money into the pockets of the middle class? Anyone with any experience in business understands that the Trumps and Romneys of the world are richly rewarded now for work they may have performed decades ago. Like a 40 year old first baseman hitting .247 making $18 million a year because he used to hit 40 homers a year. The rookie carrying the team is making the league minimum. In most companies it’s the whippersnappers making that $25,000 to $50,000 a year who are actually doing all the work, and who are paid for what they do, rather than for what they did. To Make America Great Again we need to find a way to get more money into the pockets of these folks.

    Jeff,
At least Obama worked for something, unlike you who had everything given to you by the taxpayer.

  6. david7134 says:

    John,
A little off topic FYI for you. I had my first murder by Obama this last few months. A women came in and reported how her husband had broken his hip and could not get surgery due to his age. He was otherwise healthy. He subsequently died of pneumonia, which is what happens when you don’t get your hip fixed. So, as to your opinions and blowing off the “death panels”, you and Obama facilitated the unnecessary death of another human being.

  7. Jeffery says:

    dave,

28,000 to 45,000 Americans die each year from lack of health coverage. Now those are poor people, many Black, who you consider expendable, lazy and stupid, so no big whoop. Anyway, the ACA saves more lives than the few deaths that you make up.

You claim that an old man fell, broke his hip and that Obama wouldn’t let a surgeon repair the fracture. The man subsequently developed broken hip induced pneumonia and died. Sounds to me as if you’re telling another lie.

You claim to be a physician (a claim that gets more dubious with each comment), so you should easily be able to point us to the ACA or Medicare policy or policies that restrict emergency surgery based on age. An elderly man in agony from a broken hip is left to die because Obama? Really? My 89 yr old mother in law fell last year breaking her hip and it was pinned by a surgeon and covered by Medicare. Has the policy changed? Are people over 89 excluded now?

In your defense, maybe the woman was fibbing to you. Did you examine the chart?

  8. david7134 says:

    Jeff,
People in the US have always had access to health care. You can not positively defend your statement except by reference to a biased web site. The ACA has not saved lives and it is speculated that many more now have either lack of insurance or are underinsured as a result of the ACA. I suspect that you are once again lying about your mother. Note that if you are over 75 you can not get a GI procedure to scan for cancer. Most people that I know have lost their perfectly good insurance plans or have had significant increases in their premiums and deductibles. The fact is that the ACA was a huge mistake and Trump will eliminate it.

  9. Jeffery says:

    dave,

One lie at a time, please. You claimed that Obama kept an old man from getting emergency surgery for a broken hip. What policy or policies in the ACA and/or Medicare restrict payment for emergency surgery for a broken hip? As a doctor, it should be easy for you to find these restrictions.

If you can’t answer this simple and direct question, we all know why.

  10. David7134 says:

Obfuscation again Jeff. That is your whole life.

  11. Jeffery says:

You refuse to defend your own claim. And we all know why.

  12. David7134 says:

    Jeff,
This is what you do. You call Medicare. Give them the patient info, your numbers, and any other info. The they tell you if the procedure is covered, if not why..

  13. Liam Thomas says:

I am a living example of what the ACA is doing.

I have a torn rotator cuff and a torn meniscus in my right shoulder. I have been going to doctors for alomst two years now for this.

I have been in Therapy off and on for nearly 2 years. They have prescribed two different pain relievers to help with the pain and gave me a rubber band to do exercises at home.

I cannot lift my arm over my shoulder. The doctors keep telling me the insurance will not pay for surgery until they are completely satisfied that therapy will not fix the problem.

Muscles do not grow back together…..surgery is the only option……the insurance refuses to pay……

And you wanna know why? Because in another year I will be able to get on medicare……ahh…..pass the ball for 3 years until the insurance company no longer has to pay….however Ive been told once on medicare with my supplement they will give me the same 3 year run around.

I am tempted to pay the 30k or so it would cost to do an outpatient surgery and just get it done……

Oh wait……thats what insurance companies and the government want me to do.

  14. Liam Thomas says:

ACA has totally messed up health care in this country. That was exactly what the left wanted to have happen. Thats why Obama let the insurance companies write the bill. He knew the greedy SOB’s would write themselves out of existence and thats exactly whats happening.

The left want universal health care.

The problem with that is that the medical industry is a 5 trillion dollar a year business segement of our economy. There is no way in HELLO that the US government can afford 5 trillion per year.

that means drastic and I do mean DRASTIC cuts to health care payments. It’s very simple once again the rich don’t care and the rest of us suffer because of moronic ideas that the left throw out as solutions.
