Civil disobedience is the only way left to fight climate change
Right now, thousands of people are taking direct action as part of a global wave of protests against the biggest fossil fuel infrastructure projects across the world. We kicked off earlier this month by shutting down the UK’s largest opencast coal mine in south Wales.
Last Sunday, around 1,000 people closed the world’s largest coal-exporting port in Newcastle, Australia and other bold actions are happening at power stations, oil refineries, pipelines and mines everywhere from the Philippines, Brazil and the US, to Nigeria, Germany and India.
This is just the start of the promised escalation after the Paris agreement, and the largest ever act of civil disobedience in the history of the environmental movement. World governments may have agreed to keep warming to 1.5C, but it’s up to us to keep fossil fuels in the ground.
The funniest part of all this is the notion that quite a few of these protesters are using fossil fueled vehicles to go to the protests.
It is unjust that corporations and governments can commit crimes against the planet and society without retribution, while those fighting to prevent such crimes are punished, murdered and incarcerated. But the number of people willing to challenge this is growing. And if we really want climate justice, ;protest in the pursuit of this must be normalised; we must support rather than denounce those willing to put themselves on the line, since we all benefit from their actions. Not everyone is in a position to take civil disobedience, but we can all get behind it.
Essentially, Kara is arguing to normalize violence and destruction of property in order to fight Hotcoldwetdry. And, as Stephen points out in the Guardian comments
How about developing cost efficient renewables rather than asking people to pay 3-4* the price vs. fossi fuels?
When renewables become price effective they will soar. This paper regularly tells us how most of the country struggles to put food on their table… and yet you’re asking us all to pay huge increases in our energy bills, travel costs etc. Can’t both be right.
Look to get more funding into R&D, more tax cuts for the STEM industry, govt. subsidies, more kids into science, campaign for universities to stop closing their science courses etc.
Na…. rioting is more fun.
Well, really, you can’t expect Warmists to give up their own big carbon footprint lifestyles, can you? And when it comes to Progressivism, to quote Monty Python’s Holy Grail “Come and see the violence inherent in the system.”
The first step is to reduce the amounting coal being used

They are already soaring, even as fossil fuels are massively subsidized – the costs of fossil fuel pollution are paid by societies and citizens, not by the sellers. If the true costs of fossil fuels were included in the price, renewables would be more than competitive.
The people promoting civil disobedience should try a bit of economic geography.
Global CO2 emissions will continue increasing well into the future regardless of whatever some of the rich OECD.

In the last 15 years growth has come mostly from China. In the next decade in will be from India. Then other South Asian economies. Post 2050 much of the emissions growth may come from Africa.

If the wind is not blowing….there is no electricity hence a grid with massive redundancy built in, in order to remain active.
Solar panels require billions of tons of rare earths to produce…..IF…you are going to produce enough to matter.
There are not billions of tons of rare earth that are gettable unless your willing to raze entire continents and your talking a billion solar panels world wide to make a difference.
Nuclear power plants are boycotted before they even break ground. Nuclear waste nearly impossible to store….
Tidal Harnesses are massive inefficient and Hydro Electric is nearly impossible to place on this planet without affecting some endangered species that will be boycotted for decades.
Geo Thermal is a pipe dream. The costs of such are on the order of a large Nuclear power plant and limited in areas that would even consider them in the first place.
And none of this provides transportation, or farms the lands or plows the fields or feeds the masses…it all simply creates electricity.
Electric and solar cars? Awesome. Again another technological nightmare as their is no torque in electrical powered cars. In other words your not pulling a trailer to move….Hence you get to Bicycle your refrigerator across town when you want to move cause no electric car is going to pull a trailer full of your belongings.
As I said before show me the technology to replace fossil fuels and Im on board with you.
It boggles the mind how clueless the warmists actually are…..All they know is they hate Exxon and they hate corporations……as they most likely draw a pay check from a corporation even if its indirectly.
