Tax high carbon food, sugar for climate and health gains – study
Taxing the carbon footprint of food could slow global warming and stave off heart disease, UK policy makers have been told.
It should be coupled with a sugar levy to secure the health gains, according to a study by researchers at Oxford and Reading universities.
In isolation, hiking the price of high-carbon products like beef, lamb and cheese decreases people’s cholesterol intake, but pushes consumers towards sweeter options that are also bad for them.
It’s cute how they’ve combined two notions, ‘climate change’ and “health” in order to push their Progressive notions, Big Government in charge of your life For Your Own Good, with added taxation on top. Leftists are always looking for ways to propagate their notions of government control of your life.

We call it “responsibility”. Those selling harmful products have at least some responsibility don’t they? We could ban fossil fuels but at his time that would do more acute harm than we can tolerate. We could ban polluting food production practices but again, more acute harm than is tolerable. Taxing commodities to recoup the costs of “negative externalities” arising from market transactions is fair and smart.

Leftists I know believe that everything that they consider “bad” in food is caused by corporate greed. Bad gluten, bad white bread, bad dairy, bad soy, bad corn syrup, bad chicken, bad beef, etc., are all examples of corporate greed design to addict dumb americans to cheap toxins that make them obese. They believe that all food should be organic, natural, locally grown, unprocessed, additive-free, hormone-free, cage-free, and very expensive, preferably sold by spinster lesbians in wealthy suburban farmer’s markets that you walk to. They believe that corrupt politicians are in bed with food corps in a vast conspiracy to keep us fat and cancerous. And that is what prevents their utopian dream of taxing the sh!t out of untrendy foods until there are no more angry obese black people coming out of Macdonald’s, having been replaced by happy skinny black people sipping their kale & barley soup while pedaling their way to planned parenthood. Of course, they couldn’t give a crap about obese white people in the south because they are republican bigot bible thumpers who deserve to die from heart attacks.

Surprise. Liberals want another tax to solve a non-existent problem. And if it was global cooling, liberals wpuld want ……. another tax to solve the alleged problem.
We understand that tighty righties aren’t into that whole education “thingy” but we could all benefit from understanding a little about the source of greenhouse gases. (Understanding that tighty righties don’t feel that global warming is an issue at all, so why learn?)
