Doom: ‘Climate Change” Is Slowing The Earth, Making It Wobble

All because tens of thousands of people took fossil fueled trips from all over the world to Paris to yammer on about how bad fossil fuels are and force their far left redistribution plans down your throat you drove a fossil fueled vehicle

Climate change means days are getting longer, scientists find
Duration of day has lengthened by a millisecond over the past 100 years as water from shrinking glaciers slows Earth’s rotation and shifts position of poles

Harvard University researchers have provided an answer to a long-held conundrum over how shrinking glaciers are affecting the rotation and axis of the Earth, calculating that the duration of a day has lengthened by a millisecond over the past 100 years.

The brakes will be more sharply applied to the Earth’s rotation as glaciers melt at an ever faster rate, meaning that at least five milliseconds will be added to each day over the course of the 21st century. The axis of the Earth will shift too, with the north pole set to move position by about 1cm (o.4in) during this century.

The research, published in Science Advances, apparently solved a scientific puzzle known as “Munk’s enigma”, which came from a 2002 researcher paper by oceanographer Walter Munk, examining how the melting of glaciers had altered the Earth’s rotation and axis.

Oh, dear Lord, a whole millisecond! We’re doomed! Nothing like this has ever happened before, surely! Unsurprisingly, this is based on lots and lots of assumptions and computer models. And, the article and study mostly avoids doing the blame game on fossil fuels. Not so over at Take Part

As pollution from burning fossil fuels continues to heat the atmosphere, the world’s glaciers are melting at an accelerating rate. Scientists widely agree that this meltwater has been a major factor in raising global sea levels about seven inches over the 20th century.

The movement of all that water is affecting the Earth’s rotation, according to a study published Friday in the journal Science.

“If you are melting glaciers from high latitudes—in Alaska, Greenland, or Iceland—you move mass away from the pole, toward the equator, which slows the Earth down,” said Jerry Mitrovica, the study’s lead author and a Harvard geophysicist who specializes in studying sea level change. “The change in the distribution of the mass from the poles to lower latitudes also causes the rotation to wobble slightly, because it’s being redistributed unequally.”

Huh. A wobble because you took a fossil fueled trip to visit Grandma over Christmas. And, of course, they’re all saying that the Earth will slow down even more. It could be a couple milliseconds! It could throw everything out of whack!

But, um, remember when the Cult of Climastrology was claiming that Hotcoldwetdry was making the Earth speed up? So, which is it? Eh, it doesn’t matter. This is all about attempting to scare people, so, consistency of talking points is unnecessary. I’m just shocked that life on Earth survived all these millisecond changes during previous warm and cool periods.

All because tens of thousands of people took fossil fueled trips from all over the world to Paris to yammer on about how bad fossil fuels are and force their far left redistribution plans down your throat you drove a fossil fueled vehicle we humans have injected gigatons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere over the past century causing the Earth to warm unnaturally.

    There, fixed it for ya’.

Oh, dear Lord, a whole millisecond! We’re doomed!

Besides insulting millions of Christians by taking their Lord’s name in vain, you imply that someone, somewhere said the slowing of the Earth’s rotation was significant. Well, I did something you apparently didn’t, that is, I read the God damn article. Good Lord, there was no mention of doom, gloom or catastrophe.

Jesus God, this was just a scientific observation.

Our burning of fossil fuels has caused atmospheric CO2 to increase from 280 ppm to 400 ppm and there is no end in sight. The increased CO2 is causing the Earth to warm, causing glaciers and ice sheets to melt, causing the sea levels to rise, apparently causing the Earth’s rotation to slow 1 ms (1/1000th of a second) over the past century. At that rate it will take 100 years x 1000 (100,000 years) to slow one whole second! It’s a scientific observation. The sea level rise, the warming, the loss of fresh water sources, the climate refugees and the shifts in human societies will be more concerning than changes in the Earth’s rotation.

As an aside, why are there so few conservative scientists? One would think the long work hours, the low pay, the decade of training, the nerd portrayals in the media and the constant criticism would appeal to the tough yet selfless nature of conservatives.

Teach why did you try and scare us again ?
Do you ever bother to check the primary source mentioned in reposting a you read ?

Glaciers have been melting and seas rising for over 20.000 years. Nothing out of the ordinary. No proof that CO2 is the cause, as it has happened before.

If everyone just starts running and swimming toward the east we can get back up to speed! I call this discovery “The Hamster Effect”.

  5. Dana says:

It seems that the earth’s rotation has been slowing down for about as far back as we think we know. During the early Carboniferous period some 350 million years ago an Earth year was around 385 days, as the day was only about 23 hours long, and the calculations made for the most widely held lunar formation theory, that an early collision separated the mass that is today the moon from a larger earth give an earth day back then as being about six hours.

  6. John says:

Maybe the PAUSE is making it wobble
Some are blaming the second record year breaking of temp record on that pause thing maybe it is making the earth wobble too

Seems funny, that as a 61 y.o., I remember my junior high teacher teaching us about the earths ‘wobble’, & how it creates differences in weather conditions year to year………B.F.G.W (before global warming)

  8. Jeffery says:

    from the article abstract:

… Second, he demonstrated that prevailing estimates of the 20th century GMSL rise (~1.5 to 2.0 mm/year), after correction for the maximum signal from ocean thermal expansion, implied mass flux from ice sheets and glaciers at a level that would grossly misfit the residual GIA-corrected observations of Earth’s rotation. We demonstrate that the combination of lower estimates of the 20th century GMSL rise (up to 1990) improved modeling of the GIA process and that the correction of the eclipse record for a signal due to angular momentum exchange between the fluid outer core and the mantle reconciles all three Earth rotation observations.

Do you really understand the article or just assume that it’s dishonest because you disagree with the conclusion? Who told you what to say? Marc Moron? The Hockey Schmuck?
