8.3 Earthquake In Chile, So, Yeah, Climate Change

A big one

(AP) A powerful magnitude-8.3 earthquake hit off Chile’s northern coast Wednesday night, causing buildings to sway in Santiago and other cities and sending people running into the streets.

At least three aftershocks above magnitude-6 and other strong shakes rattled the region as tsunami alarms sounded in the port of Valparaiso in the first major quake since a powerful quake and tsunami killed hundreds in 2010 and leveled part of a southern Chilean city.

Earthquakes, including big ones, are nothing new to Chile. It lies along a plate boundary. Magnitude 8’s are not unusual. They had an 8.8 in 2010. The largest ever recorded (in modern history) happened in 1960, a 9.5. Compare to the Japan earthquake in 2011, measured at a 9.0, a 9.5 is 16.5 times more powerful (going up 10 on the scale is 33 times stronger). Regardless, once you get that strong, destruction is big, and prayers go out to all affected.

Of course, you knew this had to be coming, right?

  1. The Neon Madman says:

Yeah, the stupid is strong with people who would blame earthquake s on climate change.

  2. alanstorm says:

Be very afraid – these geniuses might VOTE. (If they can figure out how to work all that complicated machinery.)

  3. John says:

    “Prayers”
That should solve any problems caused by the quake
Teach some people look to science and rational thinking for explanations
Others just say it is all part of God’s plan

  4. Hilarious. Anyone want to bet that John squeed over Michelle Obama’s #BringOurGirlsback hastag campaign? How’s that working out?

    BTW, what is “gets”?
