College President Writes “All Lives Matter”, Apoplexy Ensues

Welcome to the insane world of college education, one where an entire Greek system, including sororities, are punished for a rape allegation that has fallen apart, and where students looking to be lawyers are allowed to ask for delays in taking their exams because they have the vapors over the Brown and Garner Grand Jury decisions, and for daring to be inclusive

(Fox News) The president of prestigious Smith College is red-faced and apologetic Tuesday for telling students on the Northampton, Mass., campus that “all lives matter.”

Kathleen McCartney wrote the phrase in the subject line of an e-mail to students at the school, whose alumni include feminists Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan, former First Lady Nancy Reagan and celebrity chef Julia Childs. McCartney was attempting to show support for students protesting racially charged grand jury decisions in which police in Missouri and New York were not charged in the deaths of unarmed black men.

Protesters have adopted several slogans in connection with the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, including “Black Lives Matter.” McCartney’s more inclusive version of the refrain was seen as an affront that diminished the focus on black lives and racism, according to emails obtained by FoxNews.com.

That’s right, she actually apologized for writing “all lives matter” rather than “Black lives matter”. In fact, her apology devolved into groveling. Because people criticized her

The Daily Hampshire Gazette, which first covered the story, quoted one Smith sophomore, Cecelia Lim, as saying, “it felt like she was invalidating the experience of black lives.”

(McCartney) quoted one student as saying: “It minimizes the anti-blackness of this the current situation; yes, all lives matter, but not all lives are being targeted for police brutality. The black students at this school deserve to have their specific struggles and pain recognized, not dissolved into the larger student body.”

Well, they obviously do not matter that much, because only 5% of the enrollment is Black. It’s also a women’s only college, which makes it discriminatory. From the Daily Hampshire Gazette

“It minimizes the anti-blackness of this the current situation; yes, all lives matter, but not all lives are being targeted for police brutality,” wrote another student.

Says a pampered princess attending a prestigious (and discriminatory) institution of higher learning.

A third student at the vigil, sophomore math major Maria Lopez, said McCartney’s first email was poorly received on campus.

“A lot of my news feed was negative remarks about her as a person,” she said, referring to students’ reaction on social media. Lopez added that McCartney, whom she called “President Kathy,” is generally well-liked among students.

“She acknowledged her mistake,” Lopez said.

So it is now a mistake to say that “all lives matter”.

“It’s getting increasingly difficult to figure out what you can say on the modern campus, even for university presidents… Too many of today’s students want freedom from speech rather than freedom of speech,” Greg Lukianoff, President of Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) and author of “Freedom From Speech” told FoxNews.com.

Pretty much. This “controversy” has even sparked an editorial by the Daily Hampshire Gazette. Poor little hothouse flowers.

yeah, nothing says “treat us as equals” quite like setting them apart from others.

Here is her actual “apology (that) devolved into groveling” (in your words).

“I regret that I was unaware the phrase/hashtag “all lives matter” has been used by some to draw attention away from the focus on institutional violence against Black people…”

She apologized for being unaware that some twitterers used “all lives matter” as a counter to “Black lives matter”. Not for the sentiment that all lives matter.

Here are her letters on the subject:

Teach 5% self identify as black
11% self identify as belonging. To 2 or more races
There are also those who are non us residents
30% of the students are people of color

  4. Did you actually have a point, John?

Might it be that Smith College self reports that 5% of students at their discriminatory college are Black?

Have you actually seen that Jeffery?

Have you actually seen the idea that people think that “all lives” doesn’t include “black lives?”

The opposite of the argument is that if only “black lives matter,” then Asian, white, Hispanic, etc lives don’t matter. If the idea it to increase police accountability and to prevent police violence against people, why should a certain race be singled out? Shouldn’t all races be concerned with police violence?

Once again we see that liberals are only interested in being divisive and racist when it comes to ideas.

  6. Jeffery says:

Actually, conservatives’ constant support of the police killing Black men might be viewed as divisive and racist.

Our culture makes clear that white lives matter – but Black lives – not so much.

So now conservative whites whine that they’re being discriminated against. Unbelievable.

  7. jl says:

Actually, liberals constant support of thugs who are justifiably killed by the police might be viewed as divisive and racist. “….support of police killing black men..” black men kill thousands more black men than the police. “Our culture makes clear White lives matter but black lives not so much.” Actually our culture, or rather liberals, makes clear that minorities like blacks should be given a pass on Life 101- that actions have consequences.
