Awesome: WMO Looks To Change Weather Baseline

Probably because weather was really bad, from a human standpoint, during that time frame, particularly the 60’s and 70’s, when the concern was global cooling

(SMH) The World Meteorological Organisation says it’s time to shift climate baselines because global warming is increasingly setting a new “normal” for weather conditions.

The widely used 1961-90 baseline should be retained as a “stable reference” for climate study but a more current data set – updated every decade – should be adopted to gauge changes in heatwave and rainstorm frequency already under way, the WMO said.

“Rising atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases are changing the Earth’s climate much faster than before,” the United Nations agency said in a statement . “As a result, decision-makers in climate-sensitive industries may be basing important decisions on information that may be out of date.”

Under the recommendations, all countries would start using the most recent 30-year period, 1981-2010, as the new baseline. This would be updated to the 1991-2020 period in 2021, and revised each decade afterwards.

This might not work out too well for them, since there has been a pause going on since 1996, roughly half of the time period. Hurricane activity, wildfires, and tornadoes, among others, have been dropping to historical lows.

    Teach,

The other day in your manifesto, you claimed the Earth was warming. Today you claim it hasn’t warm since 1996.

    Which is it?

  2. Seriously, this is one of the problems with Lefties : they have no retention of memory. I’ve said time and again that there has been no statistically significant warning since 1996. Much like there have been other periods during the modern warm period with a flat line. But, there has still been around 1.4F of warming since 1850. The debate is not on warming, but on causation, as I wrote earlier in the week. Your cult is full of shit on causation. Your talking points and computer models are failures. Please retain the answef provided, as I shall not do it again.

  3. Jeffery says:

I don’t care if you answer or not.

I will continue to correct your misleading statements every time you make one.

By far, the most reasonable explanation for why the Earth is warming now is because of the CO2 we’ve added to the atmosphere. How is that full of shit? What is explanation? Magic, again?

How can a talking point be a failure? The computer models are not failures. That’s a lie from Roy Spencer that you continue to spread.

  4. jl says:

“The models are not failures.” They most certainly are. Real world empirical data doesn’t match what the models said should happen; therefore they fail. “The most reasonable explanation for the warming is because of the CO2 we’ve added to the atmosphere.” No, the most reasonable explanation is that the same processes that have warmed the planet in the past and raised CO2 levels much higher than they are now are gee, surprise- doing it again, even though the warming stopped. How is it that the planet can go through on and off warming periods for 4 billion years and now, in the absence of CO2 being the cause, the only alternative explanation the hoaxers can come up with is “magic”? J, that’s just about the dumbest explanation for something I’ve ever seen. We’re all less intelligent for having read it.

  5. Kevin says:

It is significantly easier to manipulate data if you are continuously modifying the baseline. I suspect that’s what they’re after.

  6. Jeffery says:

    j,

The mean global temperature doesn’t increase 1 degree C by magic. There must be a physical mechanism. Yes, the current temperature increase could result from the same physical processes that has warmed the Earth before, but not this time. Asteroids smashing into the Earth like in the first billion years? No. Is the sun warming? No. Changes in the Earth orbit to redistribute heat? No. Increase in greenhouse gases? Yes.

Do you have an explanation for why the Earth is warming other than to say it’s not warming?

    And the warming hasn’t stopped.

  8. Kevin says:

Jeffery, do you have an explanation for why the Earth stopped warming ~20 years ago other than to say it hasn’t stopped?

  9. Jeffery says:

    Kevin,

Thanks for asking. As I’ve pointed out several times, a single dataset, the RSS satellite, shows only slight warming over that time. The global datasets, GISS, NOAA and HadCrut show about 0.1C warming over that period. Two land datasets, BEST and NOAA show even more. The other satellite dataset, UAH, operated by skeptic John Christy shows about 0.1C. Importantly, ocean seawater measurements (to 2000 meters) show that the ocean waters are warming and retaining significant heat.

So the explanation for why the Earth stopped warming 20 years ago is, based on actual evidence, that the Earth hasn’t stopped warming. Your trusted sources are lying to you.

  10. Kevin says:

So you’re sticking with “it hasn’t stopped” huh :(.
