Kofi Annan: Climate Change Is Biggest Challenge, Like, Ever!

OK, maybe not ever, but the challenge of our lives

(IBD) When Nelson Mandela formed the Elders in 2007 to promote peace and human rights across the world, he challenged us to be bold and to give a voice to those who have none. No issue demands these qualities more than our collective failure to tackle climate change.

Climate change is the biggest challenge of our time. It threatens the well-being of hundreds of millions of people today and many billions more in the future. It undermines the human rights to food, water, health and shelter — causes for which we, as Elders, have fought all our lives.

Says the man who looked the other way as the head of the United Nations while 850,000 Rwandans were systematically slaughtered.

What is needed to prevent this catastrophe has been established. Global temperature rises must be limited to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This means turning away from fossil fuels and accelerating the deployment of affordable renewable energies, for instance by setting an agreed price for carbon.

Writes the man who takes all sorts of fossil fueled trips around the world. Think he flies commercial?

The way forward must be to meet the timetable for a robust, universal and legally binding agreement on climate change next year, under which every country commits to phasing down greenhouse gas emissions.

Fortunately, without any sort of Big Government binding agreement the world’s temperature has been statistically flat since 1998. But, again, this is all about more Government control while instituting Progressive (nice fascist)  politics.

Please correct your error about Kofi Annan. The Rwandan genocide occurred in 1994. Annan was appointed Sec General of the UN in 1997.

And Rwanda has what to do with Annan’s essay on climate change? Oh, nothing. Why do you bring it up other than to smear the man?

Don’t correct anything because you got it right:

For a nine-year period from 1987 to 1996, Annan was appointed to serve as an assistant secretary-general in three consecutive positions: Human Resources, Management and Security Coordinator; Program Planning, Budget and Finance, and Controller; and Peacekeeping Operations. While he served in that last capacity, the Rwandan genocide took place. Canadian ex-General Roméo Dallaire, who has been the force commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda, accused Annan of being overly passive in his responses to the 1994 genocide. Some 10 years after the genocide, in which more than 800,000 people were killed, Annan admitted that he “could and should have done more to sound the alarm and rally support,” according to a March 2004 BBC article.

Annan was responsible for the peacekeeping efforts in the area and did nothing.

  3. Jeffery says:

    Pirate,

Even gitar confirmed that Annan was not the head of the UN at the time of the Rwandan genocide. Please correct your inaccurate post.

Typical denier distraction and smear. Please explain how Annan’s role in Rwanda relates to his comments on climate change.

    Jeffery,

I don’t think it matters whether Annan was in charge of the UN or not. He was in charge of the group responsible for preventing the genocide. Even after being appointed the head of the UN, he did nothing to alleviate or bring those responsible to justice. I know you are relying on a technical point, but Annan played a great responsibility in the deaths of 850,000 people.

It is a shame that you won’t place any blame on him where it belongs.

As to his commitment on climate change, why should anyone trust someone who allowed the deaths of 850,000 people? Do you really think that Annan has the moral authority to tell others what they should or should not do? Annan acted or failed to act because of politics in Rowanda. When a person is willing to let that many people die because of political view, he cannot be trusted in his other views not being motivated by politics, and not the justness or truth of a cause.

People like Annan with no moral fibre should not be telling others how to conduct their lives or how to live a moral life.

  5. Did I write that he was Gen. Sec of the UN, Jeff? No. GC hits the nail on the head, and you still deflect and seemingly defend Loci.

  6. Sean says:

Boutros Boutros Ghali was Secretary General of the UN during the Rawandian genocide, but it doesn’t make much difference to a Tutsi if a Hutu hacks you to death with a machete, or beats you to death with a club, you are still, dead. Also, please note that the Hutus went on a campaign of disarming the Tutsis for years before they massacred them. They systematically disarmed them with gun control laws forbidding the private ownership of guns and ammunition, and a vigorous search and seizure of any weapons found during no knock and no warrant home and vehicle searches. Sound familiar? EVERY genocide of targeted individuals, for any and all reasons, begins with systematic disarming of the civilians first, so that the sweet, sweet govt. types will have an easy and swift way with things, once the order is given. This has happened in Africa, over and over again, and in the Middle East too. Now, govts. in the Middle East are urging Christians to “turn in your guns” for safetys’ sake. And they’re already murdering them and running them out of areas they’ve been in since the times of Christ.

  7. Jeffery says:

That’s right, we liberal statists are disarming the cons to facilitate the coming genocide. Our NSA knows exactly which cons have guns and where they’re kept (you didn’t really think the NSA was for terrorists, did you?). In early 2015 (after nearly all ammunition will be bought by the gov’t) our heavily armed Social Security, IRS, FEMA agents and thousands of specially-trained school teachers will enter your homes late one night and you and your families will be spirited away to the FEMA sites we’ve constructed in northern NY, western GA, AK, Michigan, Idaho, NM and CA. Once the most radical 5% of cons are neutralized, the rest will follow like sheep, get on the trains and go passively to the concentration camps.

We took Breitbart out, almost got jimhoft, Ted Nugent is next on the list. Dinesh D’Souza and Chris Christie have been effectively neutralized with our concocted scandals (our NSA knows every conversation any conservative has). We tried to nail Sen. Vitter and Mark Sanford but we underestimated how much abuse their constituents could stomach. Most significant con punditcritters will go in the first wave in 2015 (don’t worry Pirate, you’re safe for now).

The worst of the worst, Limbaugh, Hannity, Palin etc. will be sent to Gitmo for enhanced interrogations. We tried to get Limbaugh a few years ago with planted narcotics but he wiggled out of it. Katie Couric is one of our best agents and took Palin out by asking her to name a newspaper. Hannity’s frauds with his concerts were manufactured by us. We have reasons to believe these 3 have inside information about the inner workings of the Obama crime circle (e.g., the Hillary/ Amb. Stevens relationship) and have access to a leaker.

Several formerly conservative politicians, Ryan, Boehner, McConnell, McCain, Cantor, Rubio, Cruz and pundits, e.g., Beck have already been “persuaded” by the Chicago machine to soften their rhetoric and become neutered RINOs. Ann Coulter has been very quiet lately (wink). FOX News is in a nosedive, engineered by the Obama machine. I’m sure you’ve noticed.

passivists, liberals, commies, socialists, greenies, and cult followers like J are destroying this world. They are anti-freedom, anti-women, anti-responsibility, anti-economy, and anti-life.

The life they only care about is their own.
