97% Of Greenland Ice Sheet Melts: Everybody Panic!!!!! (Every 150 Years)

Via a Memeorandum pull, the Guardian, along with many mouth breathing moonbats, are screaming about doom and gloom

Greenland ice sheet melted at unprecedented rate during July

We’re doomed. Or something

The Greenland ice sheet melted at a faster rate this month than at any other time in recorded history, with virtually the entire ice sheet showing signs of thaw.

The rapid melting over just four days was captured by three satellites. It has stunned and alarmed scientists, and deepened fears about the pace and future consequences of climate change.

In a statement posted on Nasa’s website on Tuesday, scientists admitted the satellite data was so striking they thought at first there had to be a mistake.

My goodness, melting in the middle of the summer? Weird!

About half of Greenland’s surface ice sheet melts during a typical summer, but Zwally said he and other scientists had been recording an acceleration of that melting process over the last few decades. This year his team had to rebuild their camp, at Swiss Station, when the snow and ice supports melted.

And, damnitall, unprecedented…..oh, wait

Lora Koenig, another Goddard glaciologist, told Nasa similar rapid melting occurs about every 150 years. But she warned there were wide-ranging potential implications from this year’s thaw.

So…..it happens? Anthony Watts chimes in, noting the melting is right on time

I had to laugh at the title of their press release, where they cite “Unprecedented Greenland Ice Sheet Surface Melt”,  then contradict themselves when the main researcher goes on to say “melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889“. Do these guys even read their own press releases? Climatologist Pat Michaels concurs saying: “Apparently NASA should start distributing dictionaries to the authors of its press releases.”

Steven Goddard provides photos of Greenland before and after. Not a whole lot of difference. More from the Guardian

In this instance of this month’s extreme melting, Mote said there was evidence of a heat dome over Greenland: or an unusually strong ridge of warm air.

Ah. So weather happened. Hey, remember when Vikings colonized Greenland and grew grapes and lived an agrarian lifestyle? Until the climate changed and the world was plunged into the Little Ice Age. Darned Vikings must have been using fossil fueled combines to harvest their crops, causing it to get cold.

More: Bruce McQuain discusses, and provides some interesting charts.

Steve Bennan, posting at the Maddow Blog, conveniently forgets to mention the 150 year thing. Oh, and that Maddow’s TV show uses enormous amounts of energy, which, according to Warmists, is bad for globull warming.

Isn’t there a volcano beneath Greenland that is active? Note the lack or correlation to temperature and environment.

  2. Gumball_Brains says:

    Greenland is full of volcanos.

Also, the timeframe that this “dramatic” melting occurred, was just after the large and “unprecedented” heat wave left NE USA and kept moving eastward.

After that hot week, temps were back down to 0C.

  3. I think you guys are thinking of Iceland. Aren’t any active volcanoes on Greenland.

But, yeah, the temps had a quick spike, then back to well below freezing.

  4. Gumball_Brains says:

    ummm.. you sure?

Heh. I know, you said ACTIVE. But, what is “inactive” to a long patient volcano?

And who knows, with such a stable climate and ever non-changing world we live on, this thing might not unwake from its non-sleep slumber. (?)

  5. You know if one wakes up, the Warmists will blame it on “climate change.”

  6. Earthling says:

The ‘recorded history’ phrase is absolutely priceless.

  7. […] “unprecedented” when discussing the recent Greenland melting in much the same way I did the other day. Is Recent Greenland Ice Sheet Melting ‘Unprecedented’? Absolutely. Is It ‘Worrisome’? You […]
