Obama Admin. Proposes Rule That Stops Farm Kids From Performing Chores

The Lonely ConservativeI was really hoping this was an article from The Onion, alas, no, it’s real news

(Daily Caller) A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district member of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.

The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.

Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

“Prohibited places of employment,” a Department press release read, “would include country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.”

Good grief. The strong arm of the Central Government reaches out to get involved with things that are none of their business yet again. But, I think we can all understand that Liberals really hate the idea of people actually having to work. And that they probably will require that unionized labor be hired in place of these kids doing chores.

The new regulations, first proposed August 31 by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, would also revoke the government’s approval of safety training and certification taught by independent groups like 4-H and FFA, replacing them instead with a 90-hour federal government training course.

So, not only would the regs restrict kids doing farm work that they’ve done basically forever, but, put safety training and certification in the hands of government bureaucrats.

When I was a teenager, I did some work on my uncle’s farm. I set tobacco [Horrors!] and stacked hay bales. Perhaps I have been scarred fro life?

This is perhaps the MOST ridiculous thing ever. If Obozo, (NMP) and his minions had even a teensy clue of how farm families live, they would realize that this will be a terrible blow to their livelihoods, and perhaps even force many farmers to sell the farm!
To be honest, farm kids are often the hardest working, most well rounded kids in school. I know some from my kids’ classes and 4H was also integral in their lives, and even as grownups today- still is with their own children!

I do believe he is systematically destroying the very fabric of our country, and if re-elected will complete the job.

  3. Well, we must remember that Obama Knows Better and What Is Good For Us. He’ll probably tell us that he worked on a farm while he was a kid.

Yup- he toiled day and night and even got dirt under his nails. But where was it- In Indonesia or Hawaii? Before he was a privileged teen going to a private high school, or after?
The liar in chief wouldn’t know an honest days work if it smacked him in the face. That is his real downfall, that he has never had a real job and that he believes in Liberalism to such an extent that he’s totally blind to reality.

I don’t see this as strictly an Obama issue but rather a continuing issue of unwarranted and unnecessary governmental intrusion into the lives of people.

For example, a few years ago new Department of Labor rules made it illegal to let kids have paper routes. A time honored, American tradition went down the drain.

Growing up, I made some extra money officiating sports. When I got to college, I worked as an official making 3 times as much as those who worked at other part time jobs.

As the head official of a local league, in 2008 we received notice that we could no longer schedule teens under the age of 15 for games. It was now against the law to let kids make some money and learn an avocation.

While I believe Obama is continuing along the path, the path began years ago.

I figured it out. How can another country attack america? they would have to land their war machines in Mexico or Canada. Well, if we ship all the “Undocumented Workers” back to meh-he-coe then that might give them some leverage to allow an enemy to land there, and cross the borders.

Well, if we stop farm kids from doing chores, then they family would have to hire some “undocumented workers” which help the meh-he-kin government when these workers ship the money home, or are not in thier own country to live off the government.

am I the only person to think like this? Why else would be not ship all the illeag… I mean UNDOCUMENTED people home? because their own gov does not want them and we have to work them. Farm kids take so much work away from the undocumented and it’s just not fair… right?

  7. No, surely not just an Obama issue, government under Republicans grows too much, as elected officials attempt to be seen as Doing Something in order to stay in office.
