Obama’s One Good Idea: Ban Congressional Insider Trading

About the only thing of consequence he said during the SOTU that wasn’t part of a campaign speech

(The Politico) Conservatives in the blogosphere found one small aspect of the president’s State of the Union address that they could praise: a bill banning insider trading by members of Congress.

“Send me a bill that bans insider trading by members of Congress and I will sign it tomorrow,” President Barack Obama said Tuesday night, to applause.

Let’s hope Congress takes Obama up on this and soon. They should make sure that no federal employee, elected, appointed, or hired should be able to engage in this practice. Furthermore, I suggest that the penalties be much more severe than in the private sector, and include loss of benefits for elected officials.

Meh. Insider trading is already illegal, whether you’re a congressman or anyone else. Instead of making new laws. Arrest some congressmen based upon the existing ones.

  2. Well, not illegal for members of Congress.
