Ever get the feeling that dealing with climate alarmists is like dealing with people with Alzheimer’s? That is not to make fun or light of people who suffer from this debilitating disease, I’m sure plenty of us know people who have had it (like, one of my grandfathers). It is simply to compare what happens, ie, those of us Realists admit time and time again that yes, we believe and understand that the world has warmed, we aren’t debating that. We are debating how much influence man has on the whole matter, which we assert is little, and, realistically, we aren’t going to do away with the trappings of modern life for the alarmist idiocy. And we have to explain this time and time again to the alarmists. But, then we get into the climaheimers, and they forget what we have told them
Yes. There is agreement among the scientific community that the earth has warmed in the last century. Here’s how the world’s most prestigious scientific bodies put it in a joint statement signed by the heads of the national science academies in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the US:
“Climate change is real. There will always be uncertainty in understanding a system as complex as the world’s climate. However there is now strong evidence that significant global warming is occurring. The evidence comes from direct measurements of rising surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures and from phenomena such as increases in average global sea levels, retreating glaciers, and changes to many physical and biological systems.”
In other words, we know that the planet is warming because temperature measurements show it and because these measurements are borne out by observations such as rising sea levels, retreating snow cover and glaciers, longer growing seasons and shifting wildlife. There’s a good summary of ten different warming indicators – all of which support the theory that temperatures are increasing – in this report by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
What The Guardian forgot in that italicized excerpt is that they blamed it mostly on Mankind at the end of that paragraph, and advocate spending lots and lots of money on research, which would benefit…….those prestigious scientific bodies. But, the argument is not on a warming climate: it’s been warming since the mid-1800’s, at the end of the Little Ice Age. The climate is not as warm yet as during the Global Climate Optimum, and…..you know, this all seems familiar. It’s like I have written this same line of thought many, many times in response to the Alarmists pushing the same notions again and again and again. It’s almost like they have forgotten that “the science is settled” and repeat themselves. I should probably dig up a post that explains it all, or just have one special one to explain it, and just write “see this post” every time.
Of course, the fact that the world is warming doesn’t mean that it is getting hotter in a uniform way. The long-term rise in temperature is affected by shorter term factors such as changes in solar activity and regional cycles such as the oscillation between El Niño and La Niña conditions in the Pacific. And some regions – such as the Arctic – are warming significantly faster than others.
Sooooooooo, nature can have a big effect on regional climate patterns????????? The Guardian is, IMO, trying to take a reasonable approach in this article, and just imply that Mankind is at fault, instead of going climahysteric, as per usual. And that little end paragraph is supposed to imply that Snowmageddons like Europe has endured (and the snow on the East Coast of the USA, 3 harsh winters in a row, snow in Australia in the summer, etc) is simply the norm. And we all know that it is caused by…who do I pick on today…..Glenn Reynolds, for publishing a wildly successful blog that uses lots and lots of power daily and pushing consumer products.
So, if nature can have an effect regionally, does that mean that it can have an effect over the entire planet? And then we get this bit of idiocy from Friday
Scientists have established a link between the cold, snowy winters in Britain and melting sea ice in the Arctic and have warned that long periods of freezing weather are likely to become more frequent in years to come.
They’re really digging hard to say that manmade global warming causes harsh winters. Double face-palm.

Teach the “cold” is that record cold temps? Or just like NORMAL cold temps with high precipitation levels? Because here in NYC where we just had a large dump of snow the temps are in the mid 20s which is well within the normal range for this time of the year. Certainly not near record cold for the day which was close to 0 degrees or about 20 degrees colder then today. However this has been a better example of an EXTREME WEATHER EVENT then one of exceptional low temps. Snow seldom falls when it is below F 20 at that temp the air just doesn’t hold much moisture. That is why America’s driest area is the interior of Alaska, and the driest area on the planet is Antarctica. It is science.
Teach why do YOU think the planet is warming if vot from the effects of mankind?
Mr Ryan, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again just for your benefit. Mankind’s effect on climate change is naught but a fart in a wind storm. Naturally occurring events like volcanic eruptions, have a far greater impact on climate than man could ever hope to achieve.

And, once again, little-john proves your point. You tell him that the warming we HAD experienced can be explained through natural cycles and processes…. and he demands that you explain the recent warming trend.
You explain that warming has stopped and he demands to know why temps are still climbing.
You explain that surface air temperature records are fraught with huge warming biases, collection errors and purposeful data-manipulations, and he throws the data back at you demanding you explain why the data shows warming.
And they claim that we Realists don’t listen to logic and reason.
John, it snows plenty below 20F. That’s how we often get….glaciers! It snows plenty in places like North and South Dakota, not to mention….Canada, when the temps are below 20F.
And, jeez, John, how many times do I have to tell you what I think has caused the warm spell which started at the end of the Little Ice Age? Do you have Climaheimers?

I like that they mention La Nina, but don’t mention that there is a huge one running right now, which follows a big El Nino. Big plume of cold water around England (snow, anyone?), Pacific plume about 6000 miles long.
