Snap! Dick Cavett Weighs In On 9/11 Debris Field Mosque

Since Dick’s op-ed piece is at the NY Times, you can easily figure out which way it’s going

Real Americans, Please Stand Up

Got that? With the headline, we learn that simply because you, and over 60% of the country, are exercising your 1st Amendment Right to Free Speech, you are now not a real American.

All this talk about the mosque reminds me of two things I heard growing up in Nebraska.

I had a 6th grade teacher who referred to American Indians as “sneaky redskins” and our enemies in the Pacific as “dirty Japs.” This abated somewhat after I asked one day in class, “Mrs. G., do you think our parents would like to know that you teach race prejudice?” She faded three shades.

Dick was probably beaten up quite a bit during recess.

These are not proud moments in my heritage. But now, I’m genuinely ashamed of us. How sad this whole mosque business is. It doesn’t take much, it seems, to lift the lid and let our home-grown racism and bigotry overflow. We have collectively taken a pratfall on a moral whoopee cushion.

When is a liberal not ashamed of the USA? Yet, they never leave. Probably because most other countries do not want to add to their stable of miserable and morose citizens.

I like to think I’m not easily shocked, but here I am, seeing the emotions of the masses running like a freight train over the right to freedom of religion — never mind the right of eminent domain and private property.

Wait, what? Eminent domain? I wasn’t aware of the mosque being part of the government and forcibly taking over the property.

After some ad hominum attacks, some misdirection, we get

Our goal in at least one of our Middle East wars is to rebuild a government in our own image — with democracy for all. Instead, we are rebuilding ourselves in the image of those who detest us. I hate to see my country — and it’s a hell of a good one — endorse what we purport to hate, besmirching what distinguishes us from countries where persecution rules.

If you are getting the idea that the entire editorial is emotion based, with little actual content and no real adult argument, you’d be correct. But, hey, since you, and the majority of Americans, oppose a mosque being built near Ground Zero, led by an Imam who refuses to condemn Hamas as a terrorist group, who blames America for 9/11, and would like to see America become more Sharia compliant, well, you just aren’t an American anymore. The highest form of patriotism is apparently no longer dissent, nor is free speech allowed.

And, oh, yeah, we are about to learn quite a bit more about Imam Rauf, via Atlas Shrugs.

Hmmmm. How prescient he must have been at 10 years old back in the 1940’s. That must mean he is about 80 now, right? Actually he is 74. Thus, this event of his occurred a year or two after the surrender of the Japanses on August 1945.

What 10 year old kid, during the 1940’s would have the wherewithall to even know about racial prejudice let alone Smack-Down his teacher like that.

But, why let a little fib get in the way of an emotional outburst to slam America.

Oh, and if someone hates you to the point of wanting to wipe you off the face of the earth, are we to commit suicide through tolerance?

We didn’t with WW1 or WW2 or any other war waged against us.

One other thing, the Japanese attacked us and many other nations outright. Our own government vilified the Japanese in the media to help gin up support for the war and to accept the numbers of lost men.

But, it wasn’t to hard. The sheer brutality and violence committed by the Japanese during this time reminds me of a more recent organization\cult. Hatred and animosity towards the Japanese during that time was justified.

  3. A vignette for you: Back in the late Eighties, there was a large chunk of land, zoned commercial, out here in Brookhaven Township in eastern Suffolk County, NY, that was purchased by a French consortium named Carrefour. That consortium applied for the permits required to erect a large mall — Carrefour’s spokesmen called it a “hypermarket” on that parcel. They’d received their permits and were putting the financing together when local environmental activists decided that Ils ne passeront pas. (cf. Marshal Petain at Verdun.)

Those envirowhackos threw everything but the kitchen sink at Carrefour. Objectively, none of their contentions was sound, and they were dismissed one at a time by the relevant authorities. But the persisted, and finally struck gold: they threatened a campaign of boycotts and negative publicity against the members of the Brookhaven Planning Commission, all of whom were commercial magnates with significant holdings in the Town of Brookhaven.

The Planning Commission yanked Carrefour’s permits. That parcel was eventually sold to a local developer. Today there’s a Home Depot, a Target, and a Best Buy on it.

Where are the enviro-Nazis today? Have they no interest in preserving a priceless few square yards of Manhattan Island in the pristine state in which Peter Stuyvesant first saw it? Or might they have less interest in crusading against triumphalist Islam, whose minions are known for decapitating those who oppose them, than a harmless commercial developer who merely wants to sell things?

Teach I always am amused by your presumptions about how you choose to picture the lives of others. I don’t think hew was beaten up often at recess. He apparently was well liked by his classmates he was elected state president of the student council while in high school and also won a gold medal at the state gymnastics championship.
Captain Fish as to what kind of a 10 year old kid in 1945 knew about racism in 1945 ? Well I guess the kind that had really good parental figures. Both of Cavett’s parents were educators, so well liked that a local elementary school was named after his mother. Cavett was exceptional advanced and intelligent, he was admitted to and graduated from Yale.
As far as “free speech” goes yes we have that here in the USA and social conservatives have used that right to often demonstrate against the constitutional rights of AMERICANS which are guaranteed by our Constitution. Social conservatives did this against the civil rights of blacks and Jews and as late as 1960 many conservatives believed that Kennedy should not be elected because of his religion

    • First of all, I am NOT a social Conservative. You throw around phrases like that, but, really, most of us are not SoCons. But, they, I throw around Liberal and Leftists, so, I’ll give it too you, this time. 2nd, it was Democrats who worked overtime to block the rights of Blacks and Chinese immigrants. As far as Jews, it is those on the left who want to do away with the state of Israel.

Furthermore, quite a few Democrats were worried about Kennedy, because he was a Catholic.

Finally, you have built a nice little straw man argument, which seems to mean “shut the hell up, you aren’t entitled to speak out.” You may not like what we say, but, we have a right to say it.

Which rights are they, Ryan? The Ground Zero mosque is not about religion, if that is the argument you are trying to make. As we have previously shown you, Christian churches have been prevented from being built since most people can remember. You also have the Greek Orthodox Church that was destroyed on 9/11 that you and your liberal pals don’t want rebuilt.

So while you support the people that killed 3000 people, you won’t support the very victims of the attacks.

Social conservatives did this against the civil rights of blacks and Jews and as late as 1960 many conservatives believed that Kennedy should not be elected because of his religion

Actually Ryan, you couldn’t be more wrong. There was concern in the election of Kennedy as to where his religious grounding was – whether it was to the Constitution or whether it was to the Pope. However, Kennedy had no allegiance to either. Certainly his stance on Civil Rights can be seen in his decimating any civil rights bill that Eisenhower tried to pass. Certainly the hatred of the idea of equality can be seen in the left’s opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It wasn’t a conservative that ordered the FBI to spy on Republican and conservative Martin Luther King, Jr, it was Kennedy.

To this day, the left claims to be the champion of equality but yet anyone who has ever lived in left leaning states and areas will tell you the overt racism in those areas is much worse than anything they experience in the so called “racist South.”

You talk about the Constitution and yet support a mosque that will discriminate against women and people that are not of the Muslim faith.

This is just another you again not only being short on facts, but hypocritical in your words.

Have you figured out that 5 miles is not equal to 600 yards yet? Or is basic math another one of your shortcomings?
