Aw, poor Michael Mann. People are being mean to him (some are actually being really, really mean. Read the whole story for full context)
At first, Michael Mann, a Penn State professor and a central figure in the Climategate scandal, but best known for his discredited “hockey stick graph†didn’t like being mocked in a YouTube video. Now Mann is alleging he’s a victim of hate groups.
On ABC’s May 23 “World News Sunday,†a segment from anchor Dan Harris alleged that threatening e-mails Mann received were part of a “spike†in violence aimed at the global warming alarmist community.
And Mann, who has a lawsuit against Minnesotans for Climate Change, a group that publicly mocked him for his discredited hockey stick graph, where he allegedly intentionally hid data to accentuate the argument of global warming alarmism, complained that the e-mailers are trying to trample his free speech rights.
“It’s an attempt to chill the discourse and I think that’s what most disconcerting,†Mann said.

Let me explain this to you as simply as possible. When someone pens an article for publication or posts a story on their blog or makes a claim that a future generation will resort to violent revolution (a prediction the tea baggers love to make), it is one thing. When someone takes the time to email (or call/fax/mail) a threat to an individual on/at his/her personal email/phone #/home address, it is quite another.
You may find it funny. Most mature adults do not.

And now that Mann gets some of the same treatment, while still pushing to limit free speech of others, he goes crying to the press.

In all seriousness, wouldn’t that depend on what the “threat” is?
For example, if someone writes and says “you fabricated the data and I hope you lose your job,” is that a threat?
Mann seems to think that it is.
No one here is excusing any threat of physical violence. Those who make such threats should be prosecuted.
At the same time, mocking Mann in a YouTube video is not a threat. Allowing people to engage in freedom of speech is not a threat.
Mann wants to shut off the freedom to expose him as the fraud he is.
If he is being threatened by people, we all condemn those actions. If he is being held accountable, mocked and ridiculed for his lack of scientific integrity, that is on him.
Mann and others like him believe in “free speech” only if you agree with them. Otherwise, they will use whatever methods they can to shut dissent and honest debate down.
