Dem. Hispanic Caucus Wants Illegals Made Legal

Or, to put it another way, they want to give people who have alread broken America’s laws, from local up to federal, a free pass

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) joined a prayer vigil on Capitol Hill Wednesday, vowing to deliver thousands of immigration-reform petitions to President Barack Obama.

Gutierrez is urging the president to keep his campaign promise of comprehensive immigration reform, including a path to citizenship for the 12 to 14 million people who are in the United States illegally.

“If you can show us that you want to work, that you want to take English classes, that you are ready to pay a fine and are ready to engage in a program, then after six or seven or eight years, whatever Congress decides, you graduate,” Gutierrez told CNSNews.com. “We want to give you an opportunity to change that status of yours.

Anyone think it will be “six or seven or eight years?” Particularly for voting rights? And guess which party they would vote for?

BTW, I wonder if it has occured to Gutierrez that, as a member of Congress, he could submit legislation supporting his beliefs, rather then asking President Obama, who, guess what, can’t make legislation. He tried it before, and, it failed. And he won’t re-submit the legislation till he see’s which way the wind will blow around Obama’s finger.

Yes, something does need to be done. Has needed to be done. But, instead of a member of Congress proposing that people be rewarded for breaking the law, we should look at making sure people come legally, and remain legal.

  1. John Ryan says:

Amnesty is only OK when it is done by a saint, like Reagan. IS it possible that the Hispanic caucus is now channeling Reagan’s position ?

  2. No, it was not OK, John. It never should have been done. His and congresses hearts were in the right place, but, I do not think they considered the long term affects.

BTW, I heavily disagreed with Reagan’s environmental policies, too.
