What Could Possibly Go Wrong During Barry’s Coronation?

Alternate title: Hey, Y’all! Watch This!

According to several estimates, the “official” National Mall from 1st to 14th streets is approximately 146 acres. That equals 6.36 million square feet, meaning if you gave each person a roughly 3 ft. by 3 ft. space to stand in the Mall would be able to hold about 636 thousand people. If you put 5 million people into that area, each person would have 1.27 sq. ft. to stand in, just about the size of the length of your shoes!

If we extend the “unofficial” mall area to include all of the area between the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, the acreage would increase to 309, which equates to 13.46 million square feet. If everyone was given a 3 ft. by 3 ft. area to stand in, it would still be only enough room for 1.34 million people. If you spread out the 5 million people from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial each person would now get 2.7 square feet to stand.

Barry’s coronation should be fun to watch!

  1. Scrapiron says:

With the new city rules that permit bars to stay open all night the drunks won’t know someone is standing on their head, until they’re dead.

  2. Silke says:

Yes, there’s nothing like celebrating the peaceful transfer of power in the oldest democracy in the world.

  3. There’s a scary though, scarpiron. On the flip side, there should be plenty of fertilizer to fix the grass on The Mall, which will be destroyed.

I think you have missed the point, Silke.

  4. Take it from this lifetime D.C.-area resident: No way can that much area in the District of Columbia be adequately secured.
