Global Warming Today: Oceans Soaking Up less CO2

Run for the hills!!!!!!!!

The amount of carbon dioxide being absorbed by the world’s oceans has reduced, scientists have said.

University of East Anglia researchers gauged CO2 absorption through more than 90,000 measurements from merchant ships equipped with automatic instruments.

Results of their 10-year study in the North Atlantic show CO2 uptake halved between the mid-90s and 2000 to 2005.

Scientists believe global warming might get worse if the oceans soak up less of the greenhouse gas.

Good start, BBC News. Those are all facts. And, yes, even that last part, despite the “believe” part, is a fact. Long story short, the oceans, especially the plankton-which is more important then land based plants for CO2 absorption, soak up tons of CO2, and, as it gets warmer, they soak up less. As cold, fresh water is put into the oceans, plankton dies, more CO2, and the cycle continues. I did a massive paper in grad school on this, in relation to ocean pollution, but, as Neal Boortz always says, check the facts yourself for belief.

While CO2 has a small input on temperature increase, it does matter. On to silliness.

Researchers said the findings, published in a paper for the Journal of Geophysical Research, were surprising and worrying because there were grounds for believing that, in time, the ocean might become saturated with our emissions.

In other words, all Man’s fault from our SUVs. As I have said time and time again, I am more concerned with the damage caused by real pollution.  And, guess what? This saturation has happened before, and will happen again.

BBC environment analyst Roger Harrabin said: “The researchers don’t know if the change is due to climate change or to natural variations.

“But they say it is a tremendous surprise and very worrying because there were grounds for believing that in time the ocean might become ‘saturated’ with our emissions – unable to soak up any more.”

Got that? They do not know the cause, but they will blame Mankind anyhow. It is up to them to prove their “theories” that Man is causing that massive 1 degree Celcius change in temp, and, so far, not doing it.

Teach said: While CO2 has a small input on temperature increase, it does matter. Could you please quantify “small” and cite your scientific source for this.

The IPCC gives a very specific quantity for this expressed as a radiative forcing (1.66 Watts per square meter – as opposed to solar irradiance with a value of 0.12 Watts per square meter).
