WTW: Nance Pelosi Disappointing Nutroots

Morning, y’all. Jebediah Murphy here on another fantastic White Trash Wednesday. In that thar Nutroots world, they are a wee bit upset with Nance Pelosi, and she knows it

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, talking on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the House vote to authorize the Iraq war, acknowledged Tuesday that the failure to end the war is hurting Democrats in Congress and lawmakers will have to take bolder action.

The San Francisco Democrat, in a wide-ranging lunch discussion with reporters, said her party’s successes in passing domestic legislation – such as raising the minimum wage and helping make college more affordable – are being overshadowed.

"It is in fact true, though, that the war has eclipsed everything," she said. "While I’m very proud of the ratings that Democrats have on every issue we can name, I don’t disagree with the public evaluation that we have not done well in ending this war."

Um, Nance? The minimum wage was passed truly by the Republicans. You yourself voted against the Bill that had the final determination in it, along with 139 other Dems in the House. And it is no wonder it is being overshadowed, as 1. you Democrats have had nothing else of substance passed, and 2. you invested yourselves so much in retreat and defeat that, since you were not even able to do that so far, that is what your Defeatocrat base will notice.

Perhaps she has missed all the polling data on her Democrat led Congress. Their ratings are nothing to be proud of.

Pelosi said she believes Democrats have changed the debate over the war. But without enough Republican votes in the Senate to shift course in Iraq, she said the House would now go its own way on legislation.

Really? I wasn’t aware they had moved away from retreat and defeat, their default position even before Operation Iraqi Freedom began.

"It’s clear now that the Senate is not going to be able to do much to overcome the 60-vote barrier that will bring a Senate bill to the president’s desk," she said. "But that does not mean that the House cannot move toward responsible and safe redeployment of our troops, hoping to end (combat operations) by the end of the next year."

Funny how their redeployment dates keep changing, eh? Now they want it by the end of 2009. I have to wonder if they had a conversation with GWB about what the secret plans are, you know, the ones about the conduct of the war, when we want to pretty much be out, but do not want to tell the enemy about. And when I say we, I mean Americans who like and support America. In other words, not liberals.

"Look, I’ve had four or five months of people sitting outside my home, going into my garden in San Francisco and angering my neighbors, hanging their clothes from the trees, building all kinds of things," Pelosi said.

"You can just imagine my neighbors’ reaction to all this. If they were poor and they were sleeping on my sidewalk, they would be arrested for loitering. But because they have ‘Impeach Bush’ across their chest, it’s the First Amendment. … So I’m well aware of the unhappiness of the base."

Arrested, huh? Guess she isn’t such a great supporter of the poor after all. She doesn’t like it when the shoe is on the other foot, and smelly, dirty, foul-mouthed hippy wannabe’s are camping out and causing problems. Welcome to the Nutroots, Nance! You bought it, you paid for it, and they will attempt to hold you to it.

Interesting quotes at the end of the story

On why Congress has such low poll numbers:

"When you elect a new president, the person is the institution. … The Congress is the Congress. It’s been an institution that’s been mocked over the years, it continues to be the butt of jokes. It takes a long time for people to think in a different way."

So, it is Bush’s fault that the Dem led Congress is considered to be incompetent and worthless per the polls.

On her opposition to a proposal by fellow House Democrats to pay for the war with a surtax:

"They were not making legislation. They were making a point. Their point was well taken. … I don’t know how they decided that an across-the-board tax was a fair one. We don’t go forward lightly when we’re talking about a tax on all the American people."

Ah. So it was simply yet another stunt by Democrats, like so many others. Figures. Have to love that last laugh sentence.
