Thursday Linkfest: Lawsuit Regarding the Jailed Border Agents

From CNS News

A government watchdog group wants to know whether the Mexican government influenced the decision by federal prosecutors to go after two ex-border agents who shot a Mexican suspected of smuggling drugs into the country.

Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit on March 16 in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., asking the court to force the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department and the State Department to release information related to the case of former U.S. Border Patrol agent Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, now serving prison sentences of 11 and 12 years respectively for the shooting incident.

"We are interested in learning about any deals brokered between the U.S. and Mexico following the shooting in 2005," said Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch. "Given the public and congressional controversy surrounding the case, the more the American people know about what happened, the better."

Is President Bush listening? Will he finally get off his illegal alien supporting horse and do the right thing and pardon the agents? We can only hope, since he is being his usual closed mouth self. Sometimes that is good, in this case, bad. He seems to have no clue that illegal immigration is one of the key issues for Conservatives and Republicans (the two aren't always the same), and he, along with a good chunk of Congress, are dropping the ball. Matter of fact, the GOP allowed the ball to be picked up and run into the endzone by Democrats.

Speaking of Democrats, I recieved this email back from a Democrat

Thank you for writing me about the sentencing of U.S. Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose A. Compean for the shooting of Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila. I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.

Like you I am very concerned about the severity of their sentencing and about the adverse impact on the Border Patrol. Border Patrol Agents have a dangerous job in guarding our nation's borders. I am aware of the difficulties and dangers that Border Patrol agents face every day, and I respect their professionalism and work ethic.

On February 6, 2007, I sent a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) urging him to continue the Committee investigation into the circumstances surrounding the prosecution and sentencing of Border Patrol Agents Compean and Ramos.  In that letter I also expressed my strong concerns about the report that Agent Ramos was beaten while in Federal prison.

Additionally, on February 8, 2007, I sent letters to: Attorney General Alberto Gonzales; Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Harley G. Lappin; Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff; and Commissioner of U.S Customs and Border Protection, Ralph Basham.  I have asked each of these gentlemen to provide the appropriate information relating to their agencies' involvement in this case as quickly as possible so the Committee can conclude its investigation.

Please know that I am extremely concerned about this situation and that I will continue to monitor this case closely.

Again, thank you for writing. I have enclosed copies of the letters I have sent for your review. I appreciate hearing your views and I hope that you will continue to keep me informed on issues of importance to you.  Best regards.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein, United States Senator

I had initially written her about two weeks ago about her putting hearings together about the issue of what went on regarding the border agents issue, and to simply thank her for getting involved. I even mentioned that I was a Conservative, but that this issue transcended any political disagreements. This is an issue of what is right, not what is political. I must say, I am pleased that she is taking a stance on this issue, along with some others, particularly Rep. Dana Rohrabacher. Props where props are due. There are times when people agree, regardless of what their political stances are.

  8. darthcrUSAderworldtour2007 says:

This is “Remember the Alamo” month for conservatives that were blest to receive quality educations in the 31 Red States of America. So 189 Texicans led by Colonel Travis, Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie smoked 2,000 Mexicans after a 13-day seige for Texas glory and independence. Now, if this happened today, the ACLU would sue and the few surviving heroes would have been taken into custody! So sad what’s going on – the socialization of America.
Maybe former Tenn. Senator Fred Thompson will run for president and we’ll have hope.
