WTW: Monkey Say No, Monkey Do

And a happy White Trash Wednesday, y'all. Jebediah here, and this story is simply a hoot

A Mississippi mayor has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor weapons charges after carrying a handgun on church and school property, and a gun rights group thinks now would be a good time for him to step down from Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG).

Jackson Mayor Frank Melton, a Democrat, pleaded guilty Nov. 15 to the misdemeanors to avoid felony charges that would have cost him his job. Instead of jail time, he was fined $1,500 and put on a year's probation.

Not that this is really unexpected from a Democrat. As the book title says, "Do As I Say, Not As I Do." Democrats are great at preaching from the Book of Liberalism, but then violating those Commandments. Apparently, there is a teachers version of the Book of Liberalism.

Now, Mayors Against Illegal Guns is not about gun ownership, but about people owning guns illegally and

We respect the rights of law abiding citizens to own guns, and we recognize that the vast majority of gun dealers carefully follow the law. Our only interest is in fighting crime — and we are determined to win.

And Mayor Melton broke the law.

I have not been able to determine whether carrying a firearm on to school property is a misdemeanor or a felony in Mississippi (pronounced Miss'ssippi for those who don't know), however, there is no doubt it is illegal, even with a concealed weapons permit, unless one is in law enforcement.

Even the ACLU doesn't like Melton

In July 2006, the American Civil Liberties Union called for an investigation into claims that he had "violated the civil rights of Jacksonians through warrantless searches of homes, vehicles and persons and by violating the due process rights of persons detained and/or accused of crimes."

As they say, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Hey, if he wants to carry a gun, good for him! But, he has to do it legally, and Mayor Bloomburg, the head of MAIG, wants him pitched out on his ear. Gotta follow da law, Mayor Melton.
