And, might I say, way to go!
Colorado lawmakers ended a five-day special session on illegal immigration with a resounding approval of several bills that Democrats call the toughest in the nation and Republicans say don't go far enough.
The legislation sent late Monday to Republican Gov. Bill Owens would force a million people receiving state or federal aid in Colorado to verify their citizenship.
It would deny most non-emergency state benefits to illegal immigrants 18 years old and older — forcing people to prove legal residency when applying for benefits or renewing their eligibility. The state Senate passed it 22-13 and the House voted 48-15 in favor. Both chambers are controlled by Democrats.
With all due respect to the Colorado legislative Republicans, it is a start, which is more then the Federal ones are doing. It is high time to stop providing services to illegals, including kids. Is that mean? Perhaps, but perhaps the parents will reconsider entering the U.S.A and putting their children in harms way. It is their responsibility, not ours.
How long till the ACLU files a lawsuit over this?
What about individuals who are citizens, but for one reason or another. For example, say an individual was born but never received a birth certificate? Or this person’s been suffering from Alzheimer’s and so she doesn’t have a driver’s license or the like?
I don’t know if this is a serious problem, but given what the person would be loosing, how can measures be taken to ensure those are entitled to them continue to receive benefits?
Well, there certainly should be other ways to verify whether someone is a citizen or not, and they should not be denied.
Consider, though. In NC an illegal can get a DL. They can then register to vote. There are no checks on this. So, someone who is not even a US citizen or NC citizen can now influence US elections. I think that is wrong
Interesting thought. There is a Fed web-site where employers can verify SS#’s. To get a SS# you have to be able to show that you are a citizen (birth cert or naturalization cert) or you have to have permission to work from the DHS. The last seems to be a large loophole for now. Anyhow, a social security number on some document will get you into a hospital. The California DMV won’t renew your license unless your name matches your SSA information. So if a person has a CADL or CA info card, then they have access to any SSA information which, technically, could be used to verify citizenship.
Its just too cumbersome, really, so hospitals and most doctors will treat them anyway. Right now in the medical industry, if you have cash, you have services.
How do I know? I am the accountant at a medical practice & ambulatory surgery. No one can afford to turn away a cash patient.
