Dole In Iraq

Here’s a story that slipped under the radar of the big media outlets:

Sen. Elizabeth Dole became the first member of Congress to meet with the new Iraqi prime minister when she quietly traveled to his country last weekend.

Dole, a North Carolina Republican, told The Charlotte Observer that she and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki discussed several topics, including keeping Iran removed from Iraqi politics, bringing more schools and electric service to Iraq and his delay in naming government ministers to oversee the army and the police.

“We talked about the fact that a strong, independent person in those positions is important to give the Iraqi people confidence in the security forces,” said Dole, a member of the Armed Services Committee. “He said the complexity of [balancing different religious groups’ interests] had caused a little more time but that [the appointments] would be coming soon.”

Made it in to some papers, but not many, and mostly in North Carolina. I wonder why? Because Dole is a Republican, or maybe because she represents one of the red “flyover” States?

Either way, it is rather surprising that no other United States Senator has gotten off their asses to do the same. I guess too many are really busy trying to promote an idiotic (illegal) immigration Bill, and others are trying to stop them.
