"On May 5, 1862, outnumbered and outgunned, Mexican forces successfully defended the town of Puebla against the French. Since that historic victory, Cinco de Mayo has come to represent freedom and self-determination for the people of Mexico, and it is a symbol of Hispanic unity, patriotism and pride.
"In the United States, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the rich cultural heritage Mexican Americans bring to this country and the contributions of all Hispanics in the United States.
"Hispanics are a driving force in our country — economically, socially and politically. Latinos are the largest and fastest growing minority group in the United States. They own a record number of small businesses — 1.2 million, with annual revenues of nearly $200 billion. The fastest-growing small business sector is Latina-owned firms.
"Hispanics want what all Americans want: an equal opportunity to succeed, a safe and prosperous America, a secure retirement, better health care access, and the best education for our children. Sadly, though, the Republican agenda leaves far too many Hispanics behind. One in three American Hispanics lacks health insurance, leading to delays in diagnosis and increased cost of treatment. Last week, Democrats unveiled a set of principles to ensure all Americans have equal access to health care. Our plan will expand health insurance and improve the quality of care to close the health care divide.
"All Americans — whether they have been here for generations or just arrived on our shores — deserve the opportunity to realize the American dream. This Cinco de Mayo, we honor the contributions Hispanic Americans make to our nation, and we recommit ourselves to extending the circle of opportunity for all Americans."
Yada, yada, yada. In the USA, Cinco de Mayo is another excuse to get drunk, especially on margaritta’s and tequila. Maybe some mezcal, to boot, for those that like the worm.
But, see, Nancy that one in three tends to be illegal immigrants. I understand that that phrase, illegal immigrant, is a difficult concept to wrap your warped mind around.
What a completely self serving wire release that was, wouldn’t you agree? There is political pandering, which is the norm, and then there is this patronizing piece of crap.
Meanwhile, have fun when the Ethics Committee gets around to you, Nancy. Along with a bunch of other Demorats.
