My Mommy Told Me First

By way of Little Miss Attila (who has fortunately not washed away), comes a link to a story that I had heard on the radio or tv or something, and kinda just blew in one ear out the other (I am blonde, after all).

Americans need to consume fewer calories and exercise more to maintain a healthy weight, according to new dietary guidelines released Wednesday by the federal government.

"Let’s face it. Every American is looking for a pill. It’s not going to happen," U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said at the Washington, D.C., news conference announcing the guidelines.

"If you want to look better, if you want to feel better, you lower your calorie intake, you lower your fat, your carbs, you eat more fruits and vegetables and more whole grains, and you exercise — and that’s as simple as it can be," he added.

Amazing what spending vast amounts of money on a study can find out. My Mom could have told them this for the price of a new 27" flat screen tv (that’s what she really wants.) Heck, she told me all this in the 70’s when I was growing up. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Don’t make a pig of yourself. Have a balanced diet. Stay away from the sweets. And, for goodness sake, it is such a nice day. Go outside and get some excercise, and some fresh air.

There are 41, yes 41, recommendations for healthy living, from the Fed’s. Mom’s 5 are alot easier to remember and live by.

I LOVED Cher’s ads from the 80s — “If a good body came in a pill, everyone would have one.”
