Kerik Steps Aside

From the BBC:

The man chosen by President George W Bush to take over as the new US homeland security secretary has withdrawn his nomination.

The pull-out came after Mr Kerik uncovered tax and immigration problems relating to his employment of a nanny.

"I uncovered information that now leads me to question the
immigration status of a person who had been in my employ as a
housekeeper and nanny," he said in a statement.

"It has also been brought to my attention
that for a period of time, during such employment, required tax
payments and related filings had not been made."

That’s too bad. I personally think he would have done a great job. See previous posts for the why. Having listened to his lawyer on FoxNews this am, he apparently didn’t want to put his family nor the President (and President re-elect) through any sort of nasty confirmation hearings.

  1. Ogre says:

This is evidence that the Democrats are successful. Can you imagine the incredible honor if YOU, personally, were asked by President Bush to work for him? Just picture it. I’ve never fainted in my life, but that just might do it for me.

But then picture the next day. You KNOW how much money and how many millions of dollars that the Democrats, moveon.org, the ACLU, the Southern Poverty Law Center and others will spend to do everything in their power to destroy you. If you’ve got small children, you wouldn’t even dream of putting them through that. Score another for Democrats — and against Democracy.

  2. Perhaps you don’t recall the witch hunts conducted against almost every single Clinton nominee? That’s where the nanny scandals were invented – by Republicans.

Time to lie down in that hypocritical bed you made. Has anyone tried to impeach your President for his copious lies that have led to more innocent deaths than Osama Bin Laden could accomplish?

You’re getting a free pass. I can’t believe you have the gall to whine about it, too.

  3. Oh by the way, here’s the real story. He’s got a lot more to hide than a nanny. Yep, y’all really have a corner on the morality market…

Since his nomination was announced, other issues have surfaced indicting that Kerik’s confirmation by the Senate might not have gone smoothly.

Some lawmakers have questioned whether Kerik had the management experience to oversee the department, which has 180,000 employees.

Democrats also focused on potential conflict of interest issues because of Kerik’s recent $6.2 million windfall from exercising stock options in a stun gun company that does business with the federal department.

According to a report in Newsweek, Kerik also was involved in a civil dispute six years ago after he failed to pay maintenance fees on a New Jersey condominium he owned. At one point an arrest warrant was issued, the magazine said.

Kerik on Saturday denied an arrest warrant was ever issued, but said he had been ordered to appear at a foreclosure hearing. “The lawsuit was settled, the apartment was not foreclosed on,” he added.

  4. Actually, reality check, I voted for Clinton’s 2nd term. I never agreed with the witch hunt’s, as you put it. Quite often, unfortunatly, people who will be nominated are not lilly white.
