Hero from Coney Island

From the NY Post:

Soon after the buzz of gunfire faded from his ears, Army Spc. Frederick Ofori, who just minutes earlier earned hero status in Fallujah, called his mom in Coney Island and said only what he’s said for the eight months he’s spent in Iraq:

"Don’t worry, Mom, I’m fine. I don’t have time to talk now. Bye."

When the ringing phone roused Margaret Ofori, 36, Saturday, she didn’t know her son had just put a burst of machine-gun fire into an enemy soldier who threatened Ofori’s infantry team with a grenade.

"He’s a hero, he’s bringing peace," the mother said as she looked out over the surf crashing 14-stories below her Neptune Avenue apartment. Margaret Ofori saw pictures of her son taken by photographers Friday as soldiers fought house-by-house deeper into Fallujah.

These are the kinds of stories that we do not hear enough of.  But we should.
