Byron over at Slings and Arrows brings up a good point: why hasn’t Senator Kerry brought legislation to the floor of the Senate to extend the assault weapons ban? The Honorable Senator Kerry has cast aspersions at President Bush, and questioned why he didn’t ask for an extension. President Bush has said he would sign an extension if Congress passed one. I cannot find one thing in the Constitution that would prevent Mr. Kerry from proposing said legislation.
To make all laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution the foregoing powers, and all other powers vested by this Constitution in the government of the United States, or in any department or officer thereof.
Hmm, does that not give him the ability to propose legislation? If he used some brain power, he would have proposed something, and could have come off smelling like a rose. Nope. Didn’t happen. Of course, Senator Kerry is probably not very familiar with introducing legislation during his time in the Senate.
i’d say that it’s not The Constitution that’s keeping Kerry from doing something. it’s the constitution that Kerry lacks. doing the hard work of making legislation happen isn’t something he’s equipped for.
