The Liberals may own the vast majority of the TV news programming, but, if you want a hit TV show? Aim it at Republicans

According to months of data from leading media-research company Experian Simmons, viewers who vote Republican and identify themselves as conservative are more likely than Democrats to love the biggest hits on TV. Of the top 10 broadcast shows on TV in the spring, nine were ranked more favorably by viewers who identify themselves as Republican.

Liberals appreciate many of the same shows, mind you. But their devotion typically is not quite as strong as right-wingers, and Dems are more likely to prefer modestly rated titles.

Like Mad Men.

Interesting. Just one thing, though, doesn’t Rush Limbaugh love that show? Oh, well, but,

“The big shows with mass appeal tend to have above-average scores from Democrats and Republicans but with higher concentrations of Republicans,” says John Fetto, senior marketing manager at Experian Simmons. “Looking at the Democrats side, I don’t mean to make light of it, but they seem to like shows about damaged people. Those are the kind of shows Republicans just stay away from.”

Not surprising, since Liberals always seem to be such depressed, negative people, and they want to watch others being the same way.

But if you look at the list of broadcast shows that are Republican favorites, it closely mirrors the Nielsen top 10 list, whereas Democrats tend to gravitate toward titles likely to have narrower audiences.

To Hollywood, the data suggest a potentially disquieting idea: The TV industry is populated by liberals, but big-league success may require pleasing conservatives.

Hmm, I wonder where shows like Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Universe, and Haven fit in? They are certainly very popular with Conservatives. Though, BSG took a big liberal turn, but, it was too late for us to tune out. Had to see the way it ended.4

The whole thing is basically a set up to discuss Sarah Palin’s Alaska, which, shocker, the reporter doesn’t rip.

We’ve learned Republicans like winners. The shows might be considered fluffy, but they’re generally programs that make people feel good. If you’re a broadcast network executive weighing whether to buy a show, you might ask your uncle who voted twice for George W. Bush if he likes the idea. We’ve learned Democrats are, depending on your perspective, discriminating viewers who prefer highly original, well-written series or are cynics who enjoy watching jerks. We’ve learned Sarah Palin’s Alaska has the ingredients to be a hit, and one shouldn’t confuse TLC for being Republican just because its friends are.

You know what we really should have learned? TV needs more awesome scifi programs. SyFy needs to stop showing those horrid movies made for them, and look to scifi books that sell well for script material. Not all are bad, mind you. Sharktopuss seems to be a hit. Many of their mini-series have done well, and been good. We should also have learned that it is really beyond credibility to show wrestling on SyFy constantly. We need more shows like Fringe. Because science fiction rocks……um, what were we talking about originally?

So, ABC does a remake of the 1980′s mini-series “V,” turning it into a weekly show. Cool. Space monsters. Classic formula.

Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care.

Actually, the up front leader is a she. And, she does make all those sorts of “we’re the space aliens, and we are here to help.” Of course, in the opening 5 minutes, a large Jesus on the Cross falls and nearly crushes a man in a wheel chair. And, in the first 15, two priests have thoughts of doubt about God, because the aliens came. The first 30 seemed more about hopenchange then the original hopenchange

The news media swoons in admiration — one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: “Why don’t you show some respect?!” The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader’s origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: “Embracing change is never easy.”

The leader offers an up and coming reporter a once in a lifetime interview. Right before it is about to start, he says he has to ask some tough questions. She says he has to show the V in a good light. He says that’s not the way it works. She says the interview is over. Then she tells him this could make his career, and that he really wants to cooperate. Unsurprisingly, he does. And, during said interview, the leader states that she wants health care for all. I actually groaned out-loud when the reporter says “you mean like universal health care?” Then I remembered something important from the original series

So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait — did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who’s come here to eat us?

See, now that is the part that liberals will not like. I’d suspect that liberals are sending plenty of unhinged emails, and placing many unhinged, frothing, foaming phone calls, to ABC.

While those few nut cases are circulating rumors and banding together to fight back, the V actually attack them.

Of course, I am wondering what kind of trickery the producers, director, and writers will stick in to change the dynamics so it becomes Liberal Friendly, much as the big shots destroyed Battlestar Galactica.

To be honest, I wish they could have left the politics out of it. Ruins the atmosphere. Hopefully, they will change it up just a bit, drop the politics.

Crossed at Right Wing News and Stop The ACLU

Cracked takes a shot at determining the top 6 most gratuitously cleavaged women on TV. Interesting, in more ways then one, but, I could have done without #1. How could they forget about Number 6 on Battlestar Galactica, who spends most of the series cavorting in a low cut red dress, and Elizabeth Mitchell from Lost, basically there to provide cleavage.

What about the all time TV Women With Boobs?

#10 – Markie Post - Anything

It didn’t really matter what show Markie Post was in, she would either be showing her huge breast with accompanying cleavage, or there would be jokes about her breasts

In the 5 episodes of The Fall Guy, she probably was wearing a bikini in all 5. Virtually every episode of Night Court featured jokes about her breasts.

#9 – Jody Banks – The Fall Guy

Here is the opening credits for The Fall Guy

That would be 122 episodes.

#8 – Daisy Duke – Dukes Of Hazzard

The opening credits of The Dukes of Hazzrd features Catherine Bach in a bikini showing cleavage. Nuff said

You get the picture.

#7 – 7 of 9 – Star Trek Voyager

Now, Marina Sirtis tended to show cleavage in every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and who could forgate Gates McFadden unzipping her Star Fleet uniform that one time? But, even though Jeri Ryan is pretty much covered up the whole time, come on!

Subliminal

#6 - Kris Monroe – Charlie’s Angels

Say what you will about Farrah Faucet and the other ladies on Charlie’s Angels, which was called “Jiggle TV,” but the character of Kris Monroe, played by Cheryl Ladd, starts her first episode like thus

They may not be huge, but they were on constant display throughout her 3 seasons on the show.

#5 - C.J. Parker - Baywatch

Wait, you’re saying you do not know who C.J. Parker is? Perhaps this will jiggle your mammory

Ah, now you remember. Yes, I supposed it is difficult to remember names with a show that is based on eye candy. Supposedly, there was a plot, but damned if I could tell you what it is. Personally, I preferred Erika Eleniak, but, if we are talking gratuitous cleavage, well, no one beats Pam Anderson on that show.

4 - Morgan Fairchild – any show she is on

Morgan Fairchild has been in tons of different shows and made for TV movies, and all of her appearences provide an opportunity to show massive cleavage

You name it, she has the rack for it.

3 – Phoebe Halliwell – Charmed

There are many choices on the TV show Charmed (yes, I was a fan, but, hot babes who are witches? You know you like it). Rose McGowan as Page Matthews and Shannen Doherty as Prue Halliwell come to mind, as well as many recurring charcters, but, face it, everyone loved Alyssa Milano, who was constantly in clinging, revealing clothes

And, if you do not think that promo still is gratuitous enough, do a Google photo search for charmed mermaid.

#2 – Jeannie – I Dream Of Jeannie

How much time did Barbara Eden actually spend covered? Who cares?

Now, you may be saying “Hey, Teach, that is not a ton of cleavage and boobs! What gives?” Well, consider that Barbara Eden wore that outfit the majority of the time, and I Dream of Jeannie ran from 1965 to 1970, not a time where one was going to get what one gets on TV today. Jeannie was the precursor of deep “thoughts.”

#1 – Mary Ann- Gilligan’s Island

Now, of course, there were two gorgeous women on Gilligan’s Island, but, let’s face it: Mary Ann, AKA Dawn Wells, was dressed the way you would figure a farmer’s daughter looks in every “there was this farmer’s daughter” joke

Again, like with I Dream Of Jeannie, Gilligan’s Island was way ahead of it’s boobs time, running from 1964 -1967. Sure, you did not see much, but it was the idea that the breasts were there. As a sidebar, can you imagine a show which lasts for 3 seasons to have 98 episodes nowadays?

Honorable mentions: Eric Gray in Buck Rogers, Christina Applegate and Katey Sagal in Married…With Children, Nikki Cox (who would make the top 10 if people knew who she was, other then generally eye candy,) Sela Ward, Catherine Bell in Jag, Gillian Anderson in The X Files (you know you wanted to see what was beneath that stylish outfit!), Cybil Shepard, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nichele Nichols (Star Trek,) Lucie Lawless (Xena), Charisma Carpenter (Buffy and Angel), Yvonne Craig (Batgirl in the original Batman), and Linda Carter in Wonder Woman.

PS: yes, I know how gratuitous this post is, and I’m sure some of those that Rush calls feminazi’s will label me a misogynist, but, hey, I’m a guy, what do you expect?

Oo la la!

I do not have any photo's from the issue, and, to be honest, do not plan to buy it and get the photo's, nor really hunt. However, this is not the first time she has gone nude. If you really want to see one, go here. If you want to see almost full frontal, you are on your own.

Yeah, it is a bit of traffic whoring. Sue me .

A "terribly wrong" miniseries about events leading to the Sept. 11 attacks blame President Clinton's policies, former Clinton administration officials said in letters demanding that ABC correct it or not air it.

They throw irrational, irresponsible, hysterical, and factually incorrect slams at President W on a constant basis, but slam Clinton, on whose watch Bin Laden was let go three times, our embassies were bombed, the WTC was bombed in 1993, etc and so on. And, don't forget that all those terrorists trained in the USA while Clinton was president.

But in a statement released Thursday afternoon in apparent response to the growing uproar, ABC said, "No one has seen the final version of the film, because the editing process is not yet complete, so criticisms of film specifics are premature and irresponsible."

Will ABC woos out? We will have to wait and see.

Hey, y’all, Jebediah here with a little helper. Now, for those of you who gots themselves a brand spankin new HDTV set and a high definition setup, is it working right? You sure? Positive?

OK, let me share a few secrets with y’all that will make ya happy with your HDTV experience. I do believe that Teach mentioned it once before, but let’s try it again, especially since most of the installers don’t know.

What you need to do is set the TV and the cable box/Direct TV box/whatever-the-hell-you-use to broadcast in HDTV. You need to understand that it might not, and probably won’t broadcast immediately in the proper formats. There are 4: 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i. The chance of something being in 540p is very remote. You can go here for an explanation of what they mean, if you want.

True HDTV will be in at least 720p, probably in 1080i. But, here’s what happens. Check your TV settings, make sure they are all turned on correctly. Look specifically for something called "aspect ratio" or similar phrase. Turn that on. What that does is set the TV to change to the correct aspect depending on the channel. Me, I do not like to watch regular tv in a zoomed mode, unless the broadcast is in letterbox. (If you have no idea what I am talking about, take the TV back ) Actually, cruise around CNET from that link, would be easier then lots of writing, and would get me off topic.

OK, the rest of the TV settings, you are on your own. Something called a "manual." Weird concept. Now, grab that cable/satellite box remote. Have I mentioned that you should turn your TV and box on? No? Please turn TV and box on.

Now, depending on the brand, you need to go into the settings of the box (using the remote), and find something that may be name output formats, or formats. You will probably see "480i" enabled, perhaps also 1080i. What you want to do is to make sure that all the formats are enabled. Otherwise, what happens is that the cable box either tries to up-scan programs to to high a format, or down-scans them to 480i. Then you see what should be super clear the same way as basic TV. You have then wasted alot of money and wonder what the BFD is regarding HDTV.

Another little hint is that you should not use the same old cables. You need to either get Component or HDMI/DVI cables, the latter being the best (and most expensive.) If you have a Progressive scan DVD player, you need at least Component cables, as well. If your TV has a setting regarding up-scanning 480p programs, which will basically be your DVDs, if it is a bit pixelated, you might want to set the up-scan down to 540p or 480p, rather then 1080i.

Also, their may be a setting for "aspect ratio" with the cable/satellite box. Set that to the correct one. For instance, my cable is with Time Warner, and I have a Scientific America box. The aspect ratio is set to "widescreen (16:9), Sidebar (4:3) That means I have a widescreen TV, and regular programs will be broadcast with sidebars. By pressing the # button, I can change the aspect to zoom or stretch.

Did that make sense? Well, do it anyhow. You will thank me later. Trust me. I learned the hard way about this stuff. Everytime I am at someones home and they have HDTV, I check their settings, and, more often then not, ‘taint set up correctly.

Enjoy! And go outside and play now and then. While seeing every blade of grass during golf, football, baseball, etc, on TV might be great, your eyes would do well to go look at the real thing.

PS: if the TV front isn’t glass, do not clean it with glass cleaner. Go to a computer store, and buy proper cleanser, just like with a laptop that doesn’t have glass. Now THAT you will really thank me for.

In honor of The Tick being on Toon Disney at 11pm, starting Monday, June 13, I bring you some of The Ticks best quotes

“And so, may evil beware and may good dress warmly and eat lots of fresh vegetables.”

“Life is a big wild crazy tossed salad, but you don’t eat it, no sir! You live it!”

“You know Arthur, it’s really been quite a day. On the outside, on the surface, oh sure, we were pursued by Swiss industrial spies, trapped in the belly of a whale. But what really pursued us? Where were we really trapped? C’mon Arthur! Get Meta with me! What pursued us were our own obsessions. I’m good, you’re evil. I’m a super hero, you’re a sidekick. I’m a woman, you’re a man. What does it all mean? Nothing! And where were we all trapped? I’ll tell you where Arthur! In the belly of love, love chum… LOVE.”

“Lab rat for your thoughts?”

“Gravity is a harsh mistress.”

“When evil’s afoot, and you don’t have any arms, you’ve got to do a little leg work. And when evil’s ahead, and you’re a little behind, you’ve got to stay hip. You’ve got to keep on your toes! You’ve got to kick a little–”

TV Reporter: Can you blow up the Earth? The Tick: Egad! I hope not! That’s where I keep all my stuff!

“Oh, I get it, spelling America with a ‘K’, are we?”

“Let’s just see how you fare against two bits of flat, shiny America!”

“Rugged, self-assured, adult. These are the words that describe the man who wears a mustache. Yes, it says to the world, ‘I’m a man of action!’ Ah, but action tempered with maturity. Like a fireman… or somebody’s dad! Y’know, most of your world leaders have mustaches!”

“So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.”

“Got to pull myself together… must defy laws of physics.”

“Aha, yes, I see… a choreographic conundrum. Whoa, well that was a little dancey. You know why super villains are so unhappy, Arthur? They don’t treasure the little things.”

“Hey! You in the pumps! I say to you, ‘Stop being bad!’”

“Roof-pig! Most unexpected.”

“Their Achilles’ heel is the noogie!”

“Eating kittens is just plain… plain wrong! And no one should do it, ever!”

“So the cosmic circus moves along, its tiniest clown gone to rejoin it once again.”

“This is one small step for The Tick, and one giant step for… say, a little bug. Or some guy who’s been shrunk to the size of a penny.”

“Don’t ever try to swim against the might tide of justice.”

“Y’know, evil comes in many forms, whether it be a man-eating cow or Joseph Stalin, but you can’t let the package hide the pudding! Evil is just plain bad! You don’t cotton to it. You gotta smack it in the nose with the rolled-up newspapaer of justice! Bad dog! Bad dog! And you don’t do it for money. No! You do it for love! You know, I’ve learned something this week… on justice and on friendship, there is no price. But there are established credit limits.”

“Let’s hang ten for justice!”

“Honk if you love justice.”

“Villains, I say to you now… knock off all that evil!”

And the number one saying: “Spooooooon!”
