(CBS News) VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – A Navy tradition caught up with the repeal of the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” rule on Wednesday when two women sailors became the first to share the coveted “first kiss” on the pier after one of them returned from 80 days at sea.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta of Placerville, California, descended from the USS Oak Hill amphibious landing ship and shared a quick kiss in the rain with her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell of Los Angeles.

Gaeta, 23, wore her Navy dress uniform while Snell, 22, wore a black leather jacket, scarf and blue jeans. The crowd screamed and waved flags around them.

One girl is pretty. The other girl, in the Navy uniform, is a freakin’ hottie, and by the way, congratulations on the female dress uniforms, Navy. They’re adorable.

Gotta say, they must have done some serious photoshopping to remove so many of the freckles, and really, she doesn’t hold a candle to Marilyn Monroe. Of course Bild reminds us that cats themselves are not really the problem, but people who keep them. Bild writes: “Humans by far are worse for the climate”.

Enter Jennifer Aniston, the former Friends star who has successfully transitioned from TV to motion picture fame and cares deeply about conservation. In her contribution to a 2007 book about “saving the planet one simple step at a time,” Aniston reveals she takes three-minute showers and brushes her teeth in the shower. “Every two minutes in the shower uses as much water as a person in Africa uses for everything in their life for a whole day!” she explains.

Well, it’s good to know that Aniston has been consuming less water than the rest of us climate change deniers… in a $42 million Beverly Hills mansion. No cognitive dissonance there! Except, apparently, Aniston has recently decided that the lavish crib is “too much” for her, and she will be downgrading to a “wooden box” a la Mad Men’s Vincent Katheiser trailer a la director Tom Shadyac $4.95 million Manhattan luxury apartment. Now, I’m no expert on New York’s housing market, but that doesn’t quite sound like the kind of humble life that, say, we middle-cass flyover troglodytes already live, right?

It’s been almost half a decade since An Inconvenient Truth came out. I’m no scientist, but the fact that I can count the number of true climate change alarmists who have actually scaled down their standard of living (even though they still work in one of the most unnecessary wasteful industries in the country) on one hand is all I need to know about that documentary’s warnings. Note to Jenn: since neither you nor your peers are exemplifying a real solution for global climate catastrophe, does it really make sense to move to a city that will become the Ground Zero of rising ocean levels?

And there’s the central point: the Disciples Of Al do what he does: make a lot of noise about something needing to be done, then never actually do anything themselves, beyond perhaps a token gesture.

Actress and model Cindy Crawford was among the many celebrities who backed Barack Obama for president in 2008, contributing to his campaign as well as sporting a pro-Obama T-shirt.

But times have changed.

On Monday, Mitt Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom tweeted: “Cindy Crawford appears in a demonstration video at Romney call day to show people how to use ComMitt fundraising software.”

In some respects, there is not all that much difference between some of Romney’s policies and Obama’s. But, at least Romney wants to push Big Government projects at the state level only, the whole 10th Amendment thing, plus, he has actual executive experience. Of course, Obama has had over 2 years of executive experience, and, he still sucks at it. But, mostly, I just wanted to post some hot pictures of Cindy (looks like the big Memeorandum pull is from The Politico, not The Hill)

Gun manufacturers have been responding to a soaring interest from women with female-friendly ‘purse pistols’ in an array of trend-led colours and designs.

Despite the concerns of anti-gun campaigners, there has been an 83 per cent rise in the number of women buying firearms for personal defence, and handbag-sized models are fast becoming a sought-after accessory across the U.S.

Most weapon brands now offer a ‘female-friendly’ range that wouldn’t look out of place in a toy shop, with many offering to customise pistols with pink paintwork and Swarovski crystals.

A followup on the post about mostly economics reading; on politics, culture, etc. there are other blogs I read fairly often. On politics, Greg Sargent, Josh Marshall, Digby, and I still get a kick out of Atrios, who gets to use all the words I can’t. And I’m a big fan of the folks at Crooked Timber.

Some have asked if there aren’t conservative sites I read regularly. Well, no. I will read anything I’ve been informed about that’s either interesting or revealing; but I don’t know of any economics or politics sites on that side that regularly provide analysis or information I need to take seriously. I know we’re supposed to pretend that both sides always have a point; but the truth is that most of the time they don’t. The parties are not equally irresponsible; Rachel Maddow isn’t Glenn Beck; and a conservative blog, almost by definition, is a blog written by someone who chooses not to notice that asymmetry. And life is short …

So, there you have it. One of the pre-eminent writers at the NY Times, who constantly complains about the right wing and what we say and write, admits he doesn’t read and listen to what we write. But, good news, there are lots of people who don’t read Krugman, either
