Senate Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) on Thursday night blasted for-profit colleges that he said don’t always provide quality education and can leave prospective students in debt. In particular, he criticized an advertisement saying you can get an education while staying at home in bed in your pajamas.

“The ad that just really troubles me shows a lovely young woman who says you can go to college in your pajamas,” he said. “You don’t even have to get out of bed to go to college, and she’s got a computer on her bed there.”

Will Budget Cuts Leave Us Unprepared for Zombie Apocalypse?

Sigh. Can’t we just have fun now and then?

If zombies ever start taking over the planet, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says we’d better be prepared for it.

If the undead really start roaming the earth looking for fresh brains to eat, we can’t rely on our ability to shoot ‘em dead the way people do in video games or in horror flicks. Instead, the agency says, we need to treat it like any other disaster.

“So what do you need to do before zombies…or hurricanes or pandemics for example, actually happen? First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house,” Dr. Ali S. Khan, assistant surgeon general of the United States, wrote in a blog on CDC’s web site. “This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp.”

Say, I wonder if this is linked to the upcoming Rapture on Saturday? There sure will be some seriously surprised liberals. What if it does happen, and we all wake up as zombies? Will we all starve to death, since liberal brains are seriously deficient of protein, vitamins, and size. (OK, enough picking on Liberals)

While the zombie stuff may be tongue-in-cheek, the overall message is serious: It’s critical to be ready for real disasters — from storms to diseases to terrorist attacks. The problem, experts say, is that no matter how many earthquakes, floods or other disasters happen, people still don’t make an effort to prepare for them.

So, they’re saying that that wacky Glenn Beck, who pushes food insurance all the time, and keeps tons of the food packs stored, is actually the sanest man in the room? Goodness!

The readiness message is especially important, experts say, in light of federal budget cuts that slashed more than $100 million from public health preparedness programs when they say much more money is needed.

Sigh. Takes all the fun out of it. Also, it shows the Leftist view, that only Government can help us.

“It means that fewer people can respond and fewer people can help prepare for response, which requires planning and training so that the response is meaningful and automatic,” said Robert Pestronk, executive director of National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), an organization that represents more than 2,800 local health departments. “Without sustained preparedness funding, continued progress is unreliable and the risk of being caught off guard increases.”

Vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly and the chronically ill could suffer worse than others without the means to help them.

Actually, in a zombie apocalypse, it’s like the old parable about being chased by a lion: I don’t have to be a fast runner, just faster than you.

I’ll be ready, though, because the zombies won’t get me in these houses.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A ship-based laser tested by the Navy’s research arm could put the heat on Somali pirates.

The Navy for the first time last week successfully tested a solid-state high-energy laser from a ship. The beam, which was aimed at a boat moving through turbulent Pacific Ocean waters, set the target’s engine on fire.

The Office of Naval Research says the laser traveled over “miles, not yards.” For now, the test is a proof of concept, and it’s not yet known when it might be deployed as a weapon.

They should point the laser on full at the pirates themselves.

Just standing next to a bottle of hand sanitizer brings out the conservative in people, a Cornell University study has found.

And just looking at a reminder to wash your hands can bring out the sexual puritan, according to the research in the journal Psychological Science.

You know this is going somewhere bad, right?

Helzer and Dr. David Pizarro first asked 53 random students three demographic questions, including how they rated themselves, from extremely conservative to extremely liberal. The students who stood next to a hand sanitizer reported themselves as more conservative — morally, socially and fiscally — than the ones who stood next to a blank wall.

Students exposed to the purity reminder were disgusted by sexual situations — a couple having sex on a grandmother’s bed, for example — but not by other questionable behaviour — putting a colleague’s lunch in a sterilized bedpan or spreading a dog’s ashes in a neighbourhood sandbox.

“We know in previous studies that conservatives had more concern for purity and were more disgust-sensitive to sexual things,” said Helzer. “Why that’s the case, it’s not clear.”

So, there you have it: if you are concerned with cleanliness, you are some sort of sick prude conservative who thinks having sex on grandma’s bed is a Bad Idea, while, if you couldn’t care less if your hands are filthy, covered with bacteria, germs, snot, Ebola, Bubonic Plague, you are open to any type of wild monkey love and a forward thinker. And we all know that Conservative=bad.

And, consider, using hand sanitizer in schools and public buildings might actually be unconstitutional, because “cleanliness is next to Godliness,” and that violates the separation of church and state.
