Leader Of (Not) Sinking Island Calls Out Trump On Hotcoldwetdry Or Something

Well, it’s a darned good thing they aren’t building a new airport to go with the 2 other airports in tiny Tuvalu in order to stimulate fossil fueled tourism, ya know

Leader of a Sinking Island Admonishes Trump on Climate Change

The Tuvalu prime minister roasted the US president for his obsession with coal.

The Prime Minister of Tuvalu, an island nation in the Pacific, is calling out President Donald Trump for his myopic views on coal and climate change.

Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga told Motherboard no country is seriously interested in fossil fuel expansion anymore. No one in the US financial community wants to invest in fossil fuels, gas and oil projects are shutting down in the middle East.

Are the only planes allowed to fly into Tuvalu ones powered by unicorn farts?

“The US is going to be left behind. The guy in the White House doesn’t understand that,” Sopoaga said at the UN energy forum in Vienna this week.

When will Tuvalu give up it’s own use of fossil fuels?

Climate change is an urgent concern for Tuvalu, the world’s second smallest country, since it is a mere 10 feet above the Pacific ocean at its highest point. Rising sea levels, driven by man-made climate change, now regularly swamp these tiny islands. Thousands have been forced to move to New Zealand. Without drastic reductions in fossil fuel use, the entire nation will drown.

Tuvalu is partly created by volcanic activity in the past, partly by being a coral atoll. So, it was partly created when the seas were, get this, much higher. And, notice that rarely do any articles note the actual sea rise in the area. They won’t show you data. They won’t say how much the sea is rising. That’s because the actual data would be inconvenient.  Because it has been in the exact normal range for a Holocene warm period, and has even gone negative for a period of time. There’s nothing anthropogenic about it.

And we certainly know this because, if places like Tuvalu really believed, they wouldn’t be building a new airport to stimulate fossil fueled tourism. Nor demanding lots of sweet, sweet, redistributed cash.

    Not exactly true. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming_in_Tuvalu

    TEACH:

exact normal range for a Holocene warm period,

You type this all the time, yet never explain what you mean. What Holocene warm periods are you citing?

The Prime Minister’s insults directed at the pathetic president of the US were well placed. Maybe trumpy will order a cruise missile strike. Or will ban visitors from Tuvalu.

“The sea-level varies as a consequence of a wide range of atmospheric and oceanographic influences. The island “could” experience sea level rise. The climate of the pacific region is influenced by a number of factors; the science of which is the subject of continuing research.” In other words, you have absolutely nothing. So this clown criticizes the president with absolutely no proof except that something “could happen”. The climate circus continues

And adding more and more water to the oceans, and increasing the volume expansion of the oceans by warming, is better for the low-lying islands how?

  4. Stosh says:

There’s also good evidence from Dem Congress-critters that some islands may capsize.

  5. Jl says:

That would be bad, Jeffery, because that’s never happened before in 4.5 billion yrs.

  6. Jeffery says:

    j,

You repeatedly overlook that human civilization is only some 10,000 years old, not 4.5 billion. We are comforted that you appear to understand that the Earth is billions of years old.

Tuvalu has been inhabited by humans for about 1000 years. Has the Pacific been higher than now during the past 1000 years? That seems relevant to your “argument”, such as it is.

Humanity’s burning of fossil fuels is causing the sea levels to rise, with no scientific reason to think it will stop anytime soon. Flooding of low lying islands is a logical sequelae.
