Oh, Goody: Another Activist Explains Hotcoldwetdry Denial

I love how they have to keep coming up with fanciful excuses. Dozens of excuses to explain away the Pause,  and lots to explain why people aren’t buying their snake oil

In a Wednesday afternoon lecture at the Yale Law School, Climate change activist George Marshall detailed the psychology of climate change denial.

Marshall serves as the director of the Oxford-based Climate Outreach and Information Network, an Oxford-based organization that works to deliver material about climate change that is accessible to all sectors of the general public. In the lecture, which was attended by about 50 students and faculty, Marshall explored the idea that people understand climate change through socially constructed narratives rather than coming to our own conclusions and taking action on these convictions. He attributed the lack of social emphasis on fighting climate change to the human psychological bias to avoid thinking or talking about uncertainty. (snip)

In order to combat the social narratives and human tendencies that prevent people from taking action against climate change, Marshall said he believes we must frame the issue depending on the audience. Rather than seek collaboration across disputing groups, such as democrats and republicans, advocates should frame climate change in a way that appeals to the values of each group.

“The climate change narrative is largely shaped by the values of liberal environmentalists, but climate change shouldn’t necessarily be environmental,” he said. “The framework should work well for the people who made it.”

In others word,  they are being told to bullshit their way through,  to make it up. I do find it interesting that he discusses “socially constructed narratives”, ie, group think and sheeplism, as how to get people to Believe, rather than rational thought and deep learning to make up our own minds.

If you want to convince Skeptics,  you must provide hard,  factual data and facts. No massaging, no spinning, no changing,  no smoothing, no falsifying.  No apocalyptic doomsaying. Models that actually work. Of course,  at the end of the day, we can easily see that this is not about science,  not about the environment, not about saving humanity, nor life on earth, it’s about a hardcore leftist agenda.

Nonsense. We can’t convince self-described “Skeptics”, actually Science Deniers, with science and facts. Deniers are motivated by ideology, not facts. Deniers are all ideological conservatives famously refractory to factual truths. That’s not to say that many of the Denier leaders are not skilled propagandists – they are – look at Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.

Since 1997, Koch Industries has funneled over $70 million to the Denier industry, funding ALEC, AFP, AEI, Cato, Heartland, Willie Soon, IHS and on and on.

The evidence supporting the Theory of AGW is overwhelmingly overwhelming. Our Earth continues to warm from CO2 we’re adding to the atmosphere. There is no scientific debate – only a political one. Conservatives have lost the “scientific” debate, are currently winning the political debate, but will lose in the long run. You will be run over by the facts on the ground.

I have no idea if Mr. Teach, gitarcarver, jl, David and their ilk actually believe the nonsense they spew concerning global warming. I suspect they do. They likely only watch FOX and read WUWT, both sources very convincing in their science Denial.

Actually, you cannot convince Warmists of anything with facts, figures and science.

That’s why when facts are brought up here that contradict your point of view, you run away, stick your head in the sand or try to change the subject.

That’s what we’ve come to expect from you and you live up to it every time.

  3. Jeffery says:

It makes sense that a tribe that believes in things such as magic and deities and angels and demons and the afterlife would be suspicious of science. This doesn’t mean religion is the reason you doubt climate science, it’s just that you give equal weight to non-scientific reasoning.

And yet the vast majority of scientists in the world are religious.

This doesn’t mean religion is the reason you doubt climate science, it’s just that you give equal weight to non-scientific reasoning.

Actually it means that we are smart enough and mature enough to know that humankind does not know everything.

You haven’t reached that level of intellectual maturity and therefore you reject anything that you don’t know and don’t agree with.

Your “god” is worshiped at the alter of AGW, and like any cult member, you will defend the god and the alter rather than believe anything that shows it, and you, to be a phoney.

  5. Nighthawk says:

Us and our ilk ignores facts? How about you Jeffy? You have NEVER acknowledged the FACT that increases in CO2 levels have always, ALWAYS lagged increases in temperatures.

You also ignore that every model you warmists hang your hat on has failed miserably.

  6. Trish Mac says:

I have a liberal friend who said, even though he doesn’t believe we have caused global warming, it must be happening because so many people believe it. And why would they tell us it is so if it weren’t so.

How about that for blindly following the blind? Don’t you bother your pretty little head with facts or proof, just believe the mass hysteria. It’s so much easier than figuring out what would motivate so many to push this on the public.
