NJ Assemblywoman Wants Psych Evaluations For All Gun Buyers

On one hand, weeding out wackos from being able to legally buy a handgun isn’t that bad an idea. On the other hand, this is damned intrusive

(NJ.com) Individuals seeking a permit to buy firearms in New Jersey would have to submit results of a psychological evaluation before they could buy a gun, under a bill introduced yesterday in the Legislature by West New York Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez.

The measure would also require applicants to have an on-site inspection and evaluation of the household where the firearm would be located.

The bill was one of 18 introduced yesterday by several lawmakers in the state Senate and Assembly intended to curb gun violence in New Jersey, which already has some of the nation’s toughest gun laws.

In addition to Jimenez’ mandatory psychological screenings, bills call for home inspections for those who want to buy firearms; having prospective buyers list the members of their households with mental illnesses; requiring sales of ammunition be face-to-face; and further shrinking bullet magazines’ capacities from 15 to five or 10.

Well, now, that doesn’t seem to intrusive, does it? Home inspections? Psych evaluations? Does anyone else expect that most people would fail what would be highly burdensome and onerous tests?

And, yes, NJ still has gun violence despite the strict laws already in place.

There are also some interesting comments

  • justmy2sense: What an idiot. NJ and West New York doesn’t have anything better for her to be working on? Why not psychological testing for a drivers license or to buy fertilizer and diesel fuel? If a mentally ill person wants to kill, they will find a way. This would solve nothing, not to mention the fact it would be a nightmare to the administer.
  • rightwaynj: Not a bad plan, except for the U.S constitution and the U.S supreme court
  • Putuporshutup: This is exactly why we are screwed in this state and country. We have elected officials who think they are playing a game with the legislature. More gun laws for NJ. Another unintelligent knee jerk reaction. Jimenez should not be allowed to even speak. We all see what a bang up job you are doing in good old West New York. PLEASE READ: YOUR LAW WILL ONLY AFFECT THE ALREADY LAW ABIDING CITIZENS NOT THE SCUMBAGS YOU SHOULD BE TARGETING. Now, go away you dope!
  • ironbound1: I say, we submit all potential drivers who apply for a license renewal to psychological tests. I encounter far more crazy drivers on a daily basis than crazy gun owners for my entire life.
  • loudaman: Great idea and I think we should expand it to other facets of our lives. We need a law that makes it illegal for over weight people to patronize fast food restaurants. They are only allowed fruits and vegetables until their weight conforms to the national standard. Only then, would they be allowed to have a Big Mac. I wonder how Assemblywoman Jimenez would feel about that one?

Democrats/liberals/progressives/fascists would love a way to come into people’s homes and “evaluate” them.

Given that legislatures have the ability to steal from people, cause hardships, mental anguish, death, losses of businesses and homes, our response to Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez is:

“YOU FIRST.”

Considering that one man’s terrorist is another man’s patriot, pray tell who would conduct those psychiatric evaluations?

Jimenez isn’t the brightest bulb on the tree.

A typical woman: Dense, shallow, ditzy and clueless, but very opinionated, and always gets the last word.

Yeah, that’ll work, Ms. Jimenez: When I was in college, the looniest loonies on campus were Psych Majors.

What, by their very nature, Liberals, aka, “Progressives”, aka, Democrats, aka, Communists are utterly incapable of ever comprehending is that the crux of one’s fitness to own a gun goes to the issue of one’s morality, not to the issue of one’s mental stability.

But, by their very nature, also, Liberals, aka, “Progressives”, aka, Democrats, aka, Communists are so evil themselves that they would go ballistic if applicant’s were required to be given wisely worded exams to uncover and/or to establish their morality, or their lack of it thereof …, albeit a practical solution.

Here again, it would be tricky, though, because, by their very nature, also, all Liberals, aka, “Progressives”, aka, Democrats, aka, Communists are accomplished, compulsive and pathological liars …, imho.

Yeah Teach and drunk driving laws ? they don’t work 100% either Teach states with the most restrictive gun laws have lower death by gun rateshttp://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/184838421.html?id=184838421
Including suicide with a gun about 31000 Americans die each year from gunshot. Inn 2011 32000 died in motor vehicles. In a few years gun deaths will be MORE than traffic accidents.

So john, you cite a study by an anti gun group to prove what again?

You know john, the Navy has weapons. Are you against the Navy?

:-) I advocate psyche evals for anyone running for public office. That would weed out those like Jiminez,

the psychiatric community has been infiltrated by communist progressives a long time ago. Let’s not forget who has created an entire spectrum of disorders based on not being able to sit still and the medications needed to ‘control it’.

Excellent point, Newty.

To expand on your point, I want to add that, in my carefully considered opinion ….

Like Obama, those particular psychologists and psychiatrists are very, very dangerous and extremely destructive, because, one-patient-at-time in their cases, they want to change the world to make it more to their own liking, not to provide rational solutions to problems, and, in so doing, they screw-up the minds of vulnerable and gulible patients even more than their minds were screwed=up already, and in the cases of children, their minds are poisoned by those extremely irresponsible shrinks, who are unfit to psychanalyse anyone, considering mental health issues which they have of their own.

The link here to the similar, very real threat that Obama presents now becomes blatently obvious, well, except to those poor dummies, who he hurts the most. With them, brainwashing isn’t required, because there is so little gray matter op there in their little noggins that light rinses suffice.

Ok. Here’s an easy fix.
Anyone who is undergoing official councelling for certain high risk mental disorders will be placed on a “caution” list. When that person seeks to purchase a weapon, the FEDS contact the psychologist to seek their opinion about the safety of their client possessing a weapon. They will place their signature and medical license on it. They can be sued for false declarations. However, people like these last few shooters would be prevented from at least BUYING a weapon.

This would not have stopped Lanza. Nothing would have stopped Lanza from his intent. Nay, nothing at all would stop ANYONE intent on committing mass homicide except incarceration.
