Hooray! This Year’s UN IPCC Opens In Qatar Today!

And when you’ve lost hyper-Warmist Louise Gray at the UK Telegraph…..

The United Nations is meeting for its latest round of talks on climate change in the oil and gas-rich nation Qatar.

About 17,000 people from 194 countries will attend the meeting at the Qatar National Convention Centre, making it Doha’s largest ever conference.

The aim of the two week meeting (26 November to 07 December 2012) is to cut global carbon emissions.

Here it comes

Yes, that’s right. Qataris use five times the amount of carbon than the average Briton, at 44 metric tonnes per person per year. This is largely because of energy intensive air conditioning and desalination plants for water. Because water and electricity is free, there is little incentive to cut usage.

The Project Developer Forum, a group campaigning on behalf of green energy developers, estimate the conference will generate at least 25,000 tonnes of carbon. This is the carbon generated by 10,000 people flying into Qatar from around the world and staying in hotels for 15 nights. The total is more than the small island state of Niue in the South Pacific uses in a year.

So, COP 18 will be held in one of the world’s largest “carbon footprint” countries. Their footprint is 61 tons per citizen. America’s is 19. the average around the world is 4. There are only 2 countries with a higher footprint than Qatar (US Virgin Islands and Gibraltar). And this is where the UN has decided to hold their working vacation to tell everyone else to reduce their own footprint. Of course, those who are attending have been “urged” to purchase carbon offsets, which is a bit like refusing to stop speeding and simply paying for the tickets.

Louise further goes on to point out that previous conferences have generated about 15,000 tons of “carbon”. She does follow up with some “hope” that something will be done. Good luck with that! Every year has been a further failure.

The sad thing is, that these people have no clue about the sad insane irony of it all.

Like, demanding gov’ts pay to strip mine rare and sometimes toxic earth minerals, kill birds (some protected) and pave over delicate desert ecosystems…. to protect the ecosystem.

I think someone’s numbers are a tiny bit off. Do they take in to account the actual energy usage of the vacationers representatives while they are working there? Does this take in to account the extra energy needed to bring in the Caviar, Champagne, and top notch chefs to cook each breakfast, let alone the fine cuisine for lunch, tea, afternoon break, dinner, late night one-on-one conferences, and midnight masses of meet-n-greet.

But don’t forget the added energy of getting all those extra workers to and from the city. And what about all that extra paperwork, posters, flyers, presentations, contracts, drafts, and promissory notes printed? Since there are no trees in Qutar, this massive amount of paper has to be trucked in and printed using what I am assuming to be solar power and soy-based inks, right?

And while we are saving the world from over-energy usage, let’s not consider the increased energy used by the local cell towers to handle the extra call volume.

Why do they have to meet for 2 weeks once per year at the swankiest of vacation spots to get their work done? Couldn’t this be done using phone calls and emails where documents can be digital? If this is such an important and earth-saving issue, shouldn’t they work on this a bit more than once a year?

  2. Hey, Warmists need free vacations after all the hard agitation work they do. And most see no hypocrisy, because unless they can force Someone Else to be screwed, why bother? It’s all about intentions with this croed
