(Digital Journal) Dr James Lovelock FRS (Gaia hypothesis) and Professor Kevin Anderson ( Director, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, University of Manchester, UK) have recently estimated that only about half a billion people will survive this century due to unaddressed, man-made global warming. Note that the world population is expected to reach 9.5 billion by 2050 (UN Population Division).
So, 9 billion will die over the next 88 years. Apparently, Mankind will be unable to adapt to changing climatic conditions, after being able to do so for millions of years without the benefit of modern technology. We’ve survived warmer periods and colder periods. At this point, the AGW movement isn’t jumping sharks: they’re jumping rabid, blood covered unicorns the size of a T-Rex, with the same type of teeth.

I think climate change is credible, and Science is behind this. These are dire predictions for “business as usual”. The idea that, since humans survived for millions of years without modern technology, does not mean that we will survive the next 88 with it. And the key term here is “survive”. What is desirable about living in a survival situation? This is the fate that business as usual commits us. I’m not worried that humans will do nothing; I am worried humans will not do anything until its too late.
But if we act now, and people all stop using coal, gasoline and diesel, one of those 9 billion could be saved!
Climate change is credible, in fact I’d say it is inevitable. There has been climate changes for milennium, and will be in the future. It is whether we can change it, either for good or for worse, that is in question. I personally don’t believe, based on many different studies, that we have a negative impact on the planet and that the amount we can affect the climate is minimal. I also think it is ridiculous to expect that even by completely reversing to the stone age, we could stop the climate from changing. The earth will survive us for sure; but can we survive what she has in store for us??? An Ice Age would surely be hard to withstand, and is just as likely as a warming period.
